Stephen Harper and his Ghastly Boyfriends in Saudi Arabia

In the latest chapter of the grotesque love story between Stephen Harper and the backward rulers of Saudi Arabia, today I have both good news and bad news.

The good news is that the brutish flogging of the blogger Raif Badawi has been at least temporarily postponed.

The case of a Saudi blogger sentenced to 1,000 lashes has been referred to the Supreme Court by the king's office, the BBC has learned. Blogger Raif Badawi's wife said the referral, made before he was flogged 50 times last Friday, gave him hope that officials would end his punishment. A second round of lashings was postponed for medical reasons.

And the bad news? Saudi Arabia is still the same barbarous country.

Laila Bint Abdul Muttalib Basim, a Burmese woman who resided in Saudi Arabia, was executed by sword on Monday after being dragged through the street and held down by four police officers.

A video showed how it took three blows to complete the execution, while the woman screamed “I did not kill. I did not kill.”

Its rulers are still those who helped make ISIS the threat it is today.

From Aleppo in northern Syria almost to the Iraqi-Iranian border, the jihadists of Isis and sundry other groupuscules paid by the Saudi Wahhabis – and by Kuwaiti oligarchs – now rule thousands of square miles.

While Harper, and Obama, and the leaders of other Western countries genuflect at their feet.

Under Obama, Saudi Arabia will continue to be treated as a friendly “moderate” in the Arab world, even though its royal family is founded upon the Wahhabist convictions of the Sunni Islamists in Syria and Iraq – and even though millions of its dollars are arming those same fighters. Thus does Saudi power both feed the monster in the deserts of Syria and Iraq and cosy up to the Western powers that protect it.

And ISIS takes their misogynistic and anti-gay Wahhabist creed to new heights of barbarism.

These are obscene images. They depict two men thrown from the roof of a building as a crowd watches them fall to their deaths, and they purport to show the Islamic State (or ISIS) carrying out public executions before an audience in Iraq’s Nineveh province. The two victims’ alleged crimes? They are believed to be gay. In another photo, woman accused of being an adulterer is stoned to death, and two men charged with thievery are bound to crucifixes.

Which makes Harper's love affair with the Saudis even more disgusting.

And his posing as a Great Warrior Leader, even more absurd...

Stephen Harper, NOT a human rights champion.

Just another misogynist, another homophobe, another friend of the terrorist menace he claims to be fighting.

Just another barbarous leader...

They're waiting for his wounds to heal before they flog him some more. Sick bastards! Let's face it, Harper has no votes to gain by saying anything or by going to Paris, yet there he was in the Ukraine posing as a champion of the oppressed while hoping he gains the ethnic vote at home. I hope they see the sham Harper is and how his morals are no different than his Saudi buddies.

Two years ago, the late, great Saul Landau was warning and informing about Saudi Arabia's role in Syria.
Still great background even after 2 years!

hi David...yes, it's another good column by Michael Harris, although I don't need to be reminded about the real Harper. For I have been writing about him on an almost daily basis for more than nine years, and I always knew he was a beast....

hi anon...yes it is a beastly country, and they are sick bastards. I am hopeful however that now that the King has intervened Badawi might be spared, because it's no democracy, and Badawi didn't insult anyone. Just defended the idea of a more secular state. And the other good news is that this scandal could really hurt the Harper Cons. For remember, not only are the Saudis beasts, they are also the ones who deliberately tanked the price of oil, and Harper's close relationship with them won't win him any friends especially in the usually friendly province of Alberta...

hi mogs...because like most western leaders he is a cowardly hypocrite...

hi hinofan...I will never understand how the Saudis have managed to get away with so much, for they are the very font of Islamic terrorism. I know the answer of course, OIL. But even that can't explain why people all over the world aren't lining up to demand that the Saudis be denounced as the criminal regime they are, and as you point out, have been for years...
