Joe Oliver and the Crazed Climate Change Deniers

I'll never forget how in the dying days of the sinister Harper regime, Joe Oliver, who was the finance minister, suddenly disappeared.

And since the economy was threatening to collapse like a rotten pyramid scheme, and the Cons had "lost" the surplus, I suggested they should put Oliver's face on milk cartons in case he tried to flee the country.

But then he returned, he "found" the surplus by raiding the rainy day fund,  and selling GM shares at a loss.

Then he lost his seat.

But now he's back and crazier than ever !!!

Now he's a full blown climate change denier.

Dire prophesies about climate change have failed to materialize. Eleven years ago the World Wildlife Fund warned we had five years to save the world from catastrophic climate change. Seven years ago, the International Energy Agency predicted there were five years left.

We keep hearing that extreme weather events are increasing. However, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), no alarmist slouch, just released a report that found little to no evidence that global warming caused extreme weather events to increase.

Leaving me to wonder what is he talking about? What did he say about that IPCC report?

The world’s leading climate scientists have warned there is only a dozen years for global warming to be kept to a maximum of 1.5C, beyond which even half a degree will significantly worsen the risks of drought, floods, extreme heat and poverty for hundreds of millions of people.

And has he lost his mind? Again.

Like the time he claimed that the water in the tarry ponds was so clean you could drink it...

So why would the Sun run an article written by a kooky climate change denier?

Answer: so their chosen candidate, Doug Ford, can also ignore the inconvenient truth, and blame Justin Trudeau's " job killing" carbon tax for the GM plant closure.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's carbon tax is the "single biggest issue killing jobs," Ontario Premier Doug Ford claimed Wednesday, blaming it for the looming closure of the General Motors plant in Oshawa.

Even though there is absolutely no connection between the tax and the closure.

And that's where we're at in Canada, at the end of the year 2018, where the Cons are out of control and the Big Lie rules.

And the good news?

We are indeed running out of time to save ourselves, but then so are the Cons.

Voters will punish them for putting cheap politics before the fate of the planet.

A new generation is taking over.

And the future will belong to us...

Clearly the Cons are badly affected by the Republican Disease® the one that is a little like the weird cancer that is killing off all the Tasmanian Devils.

Does anyone remember Mulroney's attitude or Joe Clark's? I do not remember them as climate change deniers. Of course, that was the same with Ray Gun Ronnie south of the border.

It is really weird that a test of Conservative orthodoxy in the US and apparently to some extent now in Canada is climate change denier.

I hear that the ON Cons are planning to announce their approach to climate change amelioration. Tony must be salivating.

Ya but is Oliver correct that cold weather kills 10 times as many people as hot weather?

Uh oh! Simon, it looks like someone left the door to Joe's crypt open again. What we don't need is more hot air emanating from this fossil fool yet here's Smoggy Joe with another steaming pile of bullshit.
I'm not sure what IPCC report he has read as there is no assertions in the one I read that remotely indicates "that found little to no evidence that global warming caused extreme weather events to increase". And true to form, the rag known as the Toronto Sun prints without verifying any facts.
The Sun and Joe, two peas in a pod or more like two turds in a bowl trying to make irrelevance great again. I hope there's room for Thug Ford after his "plan" comes out today which supposedly will allow big polluters to police themselves. Now there's a triple flusher if I ever saw one.

A ludicrous study funded by Big Oil recently proposed blotting out the sun like a big umbrella to cool the earth. Sounds to me like the only Sun that needs to be muzzled is this tabloid rag.

Although Ontario gasoline prices are currently below the 10 year average, Dougie is trying to blame carbon tax for the GM layoffs. In reality GM looked into a very expensive corporate crystal ball and saw a future that demanded proactive change. Its unlikely they have placed all of their cards on the table and likely their crystal is a little cloudy but the overall message is that status quo complacency is not an option. Meanwhile we have Dougie and Scheer his back seat passenger peering into the rear view mirror of a 1958 Edsel marveling that how good the times were especially for Cons and plotting how it can be eternally projected into the future. Considering the accelerating rate of technical change that has occurred over the past 60 years and the opportunities and challenges currently in the pipeline it should be obvious to everyone that the hapless duo are on a fools mission. Collectively we can become masters of the technological revolution or enslaved by it and the "lucky" few.

O.K. if he wants to believe there is no climate change, lots of people believe in Santa Claus, the tooth fairy the easter bunny, etc. However, on the news this evening, from the State of Washington, they had a segment regarding forest fires. The State of Washington is now started their hiring for forest fire fighters. They say they need an additional 500. They need to put more people on each truck because the fires are different these days. They expect the fire season to begin in Feb.

I live in B.C. We didn't have much of a summer this year because of all the smoke in the province because of the fires. There was not sitting in the garden, no sitting by the pool, there was no going for walks. I've never seen forest fires in B.C. like we've had in the past 15 years, so our friend Joe can say what he likes, but I know forest fires when I see them and I'm seeing them a lot more.

well Oliver might have that one correct because so many of the homeless die during the winter. they freeze to death. However, people dying of heat, they did that in France about a decade ago. I think over a thousand seniors died during Depends upon where you live. Yes, In Canada more people die from freezing to death. However, in north Africa, people die from heat and starvation and a lack of water and a lack of food because they cant grow it any more. Does stupid Joe not know in areas its hot it gets hotter and in cold places it can get colder. Oh, well there isn't much we can do with people like Joe Oliver except perhaps let them sit on an rock during one our forest fires to get an idea of how it works. Oh, perhaps he didn't hear about all the people who died in the California forest fires. The last time I saw it on the news 87 dead and 200 still missing. perhaps joe has been doing too much blow

They only care about money for themselves.
Why do you think these think tanks are called "Ontario Prosperity Initiative" and "Canadian Taxpayers Foundation" and so on?
Because they want the biggest cheques and the best pensions and will not sacrifice one iota to make sure we survive better or longer.
And that's why it's imperative to send Andrew Schméar to the curb, and for Alberta to do the same with Kenney.
The sooner the oil industry leaves Canada and is replaced by cleaner alternatives, the sooner we are rid of these filthy Cons...

According to Wiki, India had at least 2,500 heat deaths in 2015. Oliver probably does not know what he is talking about.

It also depends on how you count a heat death. Last summer Québec was reporting, IIRC, scores of heat deaths in that heat wave we had. Ontario was reporting something in the neighbourhood of 5.

My guess is that heat related deaths were roughly equal in Toronto and Montreal but the the definitions clearly were radically different.

Hi jrkrideau...I would expect climate change to be above partisan politics, and I simply can't understand why so many Cons are such deniers. And to see a supposedly educated man like Joe Oliver spout such nonsense is truly depressing. But climate change is not going away, and the Cons are only linking their fate to something that can only drag them down..l

Hi anon@811 AM...i don't know whether more people are killed by cold weather than hot weather, but I imagine more die from hot weather. And it doesn't really matter since climate change can cause both extremes. The warming of the Arctic can cause the jet stream to dip and bring freezing temperatures down into the heart of North America, and Europe. The coldest winter I have ever experienced was about four years ago, when that happened and all the Great Lakes froze. So it just goes to show the ignorance of Joe Oliver....

Simon said...

Hi JD...Oliver really is like a zombie, just when you think he's gone, he stumbles back again. The IPCC report is clear, we are running out of time, so either Joe is seeing things or he's lying. As for the Sun, if you remember during the election campaign a leaked memo from its editor clearly showed that it's just a Con propaganda sheet. It's always accusing others of spreading "fake news" when nobody spreads more of that manure than it does. We are living in an upside down world, and will not be able to right it until all Cons are decisively defeated, and thrown into the garbage can of history...

Hi Jackie...I read something similar from a group of scientists who are proposing to spray some gas into the lower atmosphere to reduce the heat of the sun. The study was incredibly detailed, and when I finished it I'm sure I must have been as pale as a sheet. I don't know how we are going to survive climate change, but only the truth can set us free or save us..

Hi RT...I knew Ford was going to blame a nonexistent carbon tax for the GM, but I had to hear it to believe it. And when I did I could only think that my decision to portray him as an ape was entirely justified. This isn't the Ford Nation, this is the Moron Nation and it makes me fear for the future of humanity. The filthy Trump has got away with lying so often, all the Cons are now imitating him. If we want to live in a sane world, we must defeat them decisively, and keep them out of power for at least a generation, or two, or three...

HI e.a.f....I saw the fires in B.C. On TV and they looked awful with all that smoke drifting down to hang over Vancouver. And unless Joe is now blind, deaf, and dumb he must have seen that too. And maybe he might also have seen the fires in California that killed so many people. But the problem is that these Con climate change deniers are totally brainwashed, and will claim it's just natural and has been happening that way for a million years. Luckily they are in a minority, and the majority must make sure they never get a chance to govern us or we will be in big trouble...

Simon said...

Hi Pierre...I agree with you completely, as usual. 😉Those wretched Cons only care about money and themselves. They cut taxes recklessly until we don't have enough to fund even Medicare properly, Then they'll argue the only way to save it is to privatize it, which is what they wanted to do in the first place. They don't care about pensions because they're rich enough not to need them, and before we know it we'll be living in a jungle, while the rich look down on us from their gated communities, and laugh at our misery. Unfortunately greed blinds a lot of people who should know better, and by the time they realize what's happening it could be too late. It's time the Cons and our grubby oil industry are replaced by something better before they kill our country....
