The Incredible Gall of Postmedia's Paul Godfrey

I knew that the Postmedia boss Paul Godfrey is absolutely desperate, as his sinking media empire takes on more water, or debt, with every passing hour.

But who knew that after turning Postmedia into a branch of the Con propaganda machine, that attacks Justin Trudeau and his Liberals every single day of the year.

Godfrey would have the gall to ask the government to give him a tax break.

Or just beg for money.

Paul Godfrey, the president and CEO of Postmedia, is asking the federal government to spend more on advertising in Canadian newspapers, and consider giving greater tax breaks to newspapers to help the struggling industry.

“I’m here today to tell you that everything you read or seen or clicked on foretelling the doom and gloom of the news media industry does not provide the full picture. In fact it is actually quite understated.

And while normally I would be in favour of helping our ailing newspaper industry, because Postmedia is such a big part of it, I'm against it.

After all, as my MP Adam Vaughan reminded Godfrey, so are his columnists.

Liberal MP Adam Vaughan, who was the first to pose questions to Godfrey, suggested that Postmedia has been a strong critic of government spending on advertising, and cited from a number of stories.

Godfrey said columnists are free to say what they want.

And I'd hate to get on the wrong side of Andrew Coyne on one of his many bad days...

Because judging by some of the headlines in the Postmedia newspapers yesterday he was in a partisan frenzy.

COYNE ON ELECTORAL REFORM: ARE THE LIBERALS CONNING US AGAIN?

And so were his fellow Con stooges. With Tasha Kheirridin weighing in with this one:

THE LIBERALS' ELECTORAL REFORM PLAN BIASES THE PARTY, AT THE EXPENSE OF DEMOCRACY.

John Ivison contributing this on Twitter:

To support Ambrose's demand for a referendum, which is the only thing that can save the Cons from total destruction.

And Michael Den Tandt contributing this one.

LIBERALS' ELECTORAL REFORM SCHEME THAT SEEMED SO BOLD DURING CAMPAIGN FALLING FLAT ON ARRIVAL.

To try to make us believe that it's the Liberals who are falling flat, not Postmedia.

But after reading that, if you were Justin Trudeau, what would YOU tell Paul Godfrey?

Because I know what I would say eh?

You can take your tax break, and shove it you know where. You're not getting a PENNY from my government.

Hold on tight to your Titanic.

Tell John Ivison and Andrew Coyne to play "Nearer My God Than Thee."

Or whatever...

And when the groaning Postmedia ship finally does go down.

Let's hope you can swim...

You know, I fear the last moments of the Postmedia gang are not going to be pretty.

There's going to be a lot of wailing and screaming.

But they were Cons. They were foul.

So they will not be missed...

That other Con propaganda machine--The Globe and Mail--owned by the Woodbridge Company, contains this recent column which I did not expect:

Let the main stream media sink. Read Tyee, National Observer, ipolitics, Desmogblog or any of the other independent news sources.

I thought Postmedia was all for small government and against handouts to "special interests." You've made your bed, now lie in it. Hypocrites.

What a piece of shat, Godfrey is, asking for handouts from the taxpayers of Canada to pursue his attack on us!!!!! Some people just do not have the moral compass to think properly!!!!!! When I read this yesterday I thought you would not let that one pass. I honestly do not know how he could show his face, let alone have his hand out for taxpayers to fill after the ignorant, self serving things his morally depleted Postmedia reported during the election. Some humans are just not fit to walk this earth!!! If there actually was a guy in the sky, lightening would have struck that Godfrey idiot down long, long ago,

Godfrey's pleas for more ad buys confirms those InAction Plan ads/propaganda buys were helping prop up Postmedia. A "subsidy" for a company that pooh poohs them for others (quite hypocritical as others here have pointed out.)

And this article is purposely written in a style to show how a Trudeau hater is forced to commend him--albeit in a back-handed way.

This would be my response. You guys are such an important part of our society, impartial reporting of events of the day is paramount to a high functioning society. We must maintain a separation of the press and the government of the day, so sorry PostMedia, no can do.

Makes you wonder how much of their budget was from PMO of Harper. A mere 6 months and they are desperately tugging at mom's skirt hem for money.

Great blog. Would not have known about this otherwise.

hi anon...yes they are the future, and all progressives should support them.

hi anon...yes they are hypocrites, but then they are desperate. And at this stage I guess they're ready to try anything...

hi anon...that was my reaction too. How dare they ask for money to keep putting out their Con propaganda? I always felt that it was Con advertising that helped keep them and Sun TV afloat. But sadly not them the Cons are gone, and they shouldn't get a penny of our money...

hi Dan...yes as I just told the commenter above I always felt those ads were helping buy off the media all over the country, along with the ads from Big Oil. For many desperate media outlets they could be the difference between surviving or not. And of course there was a price to pay...

hi Mound...yes, but then of course he has nothing to worry about. Postmedia might go up like the Hindenburg, but Godfrey will float gently to the ground with his golden parachute...

Simon said...

hi TS...yes that would be a good idea, and would really rub it in. We can't give you any money because we don't want to look biased. Or as biased as you are. And it does make you wonder how much money the Cons were funnelling in their direction, with their porky ads. Hopefully if Postmedia goes down some of its papers will survive and be more independent once they are freed from Godfrey and his gang...

hi David...yes, I finding the Huffington Post, and Althia Raj in particular, to be more and more Con all the time. The situation is so desperate I'm forced to consider Buzzfeed more reliable and more progressive....

Disgusting display of entitlement and arrogance, like Sophie Gregoire. Rich, privileged and living in luxury, but still with their hands out like street beggars.
