The Ghastly Return of Stephen Harper

I know this may be hard to believe, but after attacking Stephen Harper almost every day for almost ten years, my memories of him and his grim decade of darkness had started to fade.

And I almost felt sorry for him.

After all I said to myself, he's not the Great Leader he once was. People change, time heals almost everything.

I even started to wonder whether I had been too hard on him. Can you believe that?

But then I saw this.

And I realized I had nothing to be sorry about, for he hasn't changed a bit.

He's still the same Con clown on the world stage...

The same old reactionary.

Former prime minister Stephen Harper is being criticized for congratulating Hungary's Viktor Orban on his election victory, despite the concerns of international observers who say the campaign was tainted by hostile anti-immigrant rhetoric.

From the same old Con party.

Harper made the comments in his role as chairman of the International Democrat Union, an alliance of more than 80 centre-right parties from around the world which includes the Conservative Party of Canada.

The same friend of bigots and religious fanatics.

Throughout the campaign, Orban railed against the United Nations, the European Union, Hungarian-American billionaire George Soros and the civic groups he funds, accusing them of plotting to turn Hungary into an "immigrant country" and erase its Christian identity.

The same ghastly practitioner of the politics of division.

Just like his successor, the creepy religious fanatic Andrew Scheer, who as I pointed out on Monday, shares the same alien un-Canadian values.

I mean doesn't his new Facebook and Twitter profile photo make you want to jump up and sing God Bless America?

And is he not the same human attack machine?

For that is Harper's most lasting legacy.

The politics of personal destruction that can poison a country.

You know, Rick Mercer wrapped up the 15th and final season of his Mercer Report last night...

Where he spent a lot of time celebrating this country and its people.

Like Scheer never does, and Harper never did...

For the same obvious reason.

They are both, at their core, more American than Canadian.

As I said yesterday, thank goodness for a real Canadian leader.

Who may not be perfect, but at least shares our Canadian values.

And never attacks his opponents like they attack him.

And thank you Rick Mercer for so many good rants, and so many good sketches.

Including this one.

Which is still the place where Stephen Harper belongs.

And will hopefully one day be joined by Andrew Scheer.

One Great Con Leader was enough.

Never again....

IDU? Isn't that a birth control device? I thought the fundies were against those. Every sperm is sacred and all that...

Hmm... that rhetoric sounds awfully familiar.......

I cried tears of joy when we sent Harper away, he was the worst Prime Minister of all-time.

They call themselves "center right"? I think right/alt-right would be more fitting would it not?
No worries about me feeling sorry for him, Simon. Harper's the same old POS that he ever was, however, we should thank him for reminding us that his legacy will always be that of the most corrupt, divisive and vindictive Prime Minister this great country has ever had to endure.
And now we have his beloved though equally repulsive Schmeagol to deal with. They don't deserve to be called Conservatives, they destroyed the name the day the Deformed party merged with them.

I'm from Hungary, and I'm glad your former prime minister is criticized for congratulating Orban. This person has created so much tension, you can't talk to any of his fanatics without getting into a terrible quarrel with them, because they cannot take any disagreement. Even family members can get into bitter arguments over politics.
Our hospitals are often in need of renewal, as well as our schools, but what are we building instead? Stadiums, for our football teams, which are so bad, that they never get anywhere in international leagues, and hardly anyone watches them. There aren't enough doctors and nurses in our health care system, because the wages are very law, and a lot of the have gone to work in western Europe. Those who have stayed are overburdened, and often lack basic tools, like rubber gloves or antiseptics. Patients bring their own medicine with them.
Teachers have to use one particular school book, they don't have a choice. As a result, we are in a bad place in international surveys, like PISA.
Why do a lot of people still vote for him? Probably because a lot of Hungarians only watch tv channels and read newspapers owned by Orban's friends. In addition, corruption is at an all-time high (including stealing EU money), but nobody from the FIDESZ party gets prosecuted, because the general prosecutor is also a friend, and doesn't let that happen. I could go on, but I think, you have a clue now about what's happening here. I hate the guy, didn't vote for him, but there's only so much I could do.
I'm an open-minded liberal, who feels like an alien in her own country. I have followed and admired your PM since he was elected, that's how I found this blog. He may not be perfect, but I'm deeply convinced he does everything he can for his country. Saying I envy you is an understatement.

I remember how you started attacking Harper long before most and anyone on Progressive Bloggers and how everything you said about him turned out to be true. I can't tell you how much you lifted my spirits and I will always be grateful. I hope nobody ever forgets what Harper did to Canada.

Not surprising to discover that home grown Canadian values Andy is subservient to a global autocratic christian union. What is surprising is how quickly the former oily messiah went from a Putin hating, democratic values champion and Israeli supporter to congratulating an autocratic Putin puppet who offers up Jews and Muslims as scapegoats. Seems that the evangelical bulls will charge a Muslim flag even when an experienced autocratic matador is planning to terminate them at the end of the show.

Hi anon@10:04 AM...No, a IUD is a birth control device, while IDU is shorthand for idiots and dictators united. You know, the kind of place where Great Fallen Leader would feel most at home...

Hi anon@10:47 AM...It does doesn't it? It's sad to see the leader of a cultured country like Hungary talk like a Trumpling. And sadly the same kind of poison is spreading all over Europe. We are going to have to fight them like we fought the Nazis until they are just a bad memory...

HI anon@11:48 AM...I know how you felt, the night Harper was defeated was one of the happiest nights of my life. Although I made the mistake of drinking heavily, even though I don't drink, and spent the next day feeling somewhat diminished...🤕

Hi JD....yes, that's the Con media for you. Those "center right" parties would have to wear swastika arm bands and shout Heil Harper before they are called fascists. But at least we know now that Harper is not content with peddling his quack services to the rich and famous, and could be attempting a political comeback. My guess is he fantasizes about being one of the founding fathers of Albertonia after Jason Kenney leads it out of Confederation. First they destroyed the Progressive Conservative party, and then they destroyed Canada...

Hi anon@4:02 PM....Thank you for your interesting and informative comment. I'm so sorry your country is going through such a hard time. And I am particularly upset to hear about the state of the healthcare system. I am familiar with what the Brexit Cons are doing to Britain's NHS and Incan't believe this is happening in Europe. Don't despair though, we are all going through hard times but we will outlast them, and we will defeat them...

Hi anon@7:28 PM...thank you for those kind words. I was only one in million, but it was a struggle I will always remember. There were many deeply discouraging days, but the day we toppled the tyrant made up for them all. Now I live for the day when we can rid Canada of the Con menace once and for all, and I can retire from politics and live happily ever after...😎

Hi RT...when you look at the formative years of Harper and Scheer they are both remarkably similar. They both had a penchant for what I would call right-wing rough trade for lack of a better word. And they both learned to conceal their past, with the help of the Con media. There is a limit to what we can do, but the more we can pull back the curtain, the more damage we can do to them....
