The Day the Harper Legacy Got Hit By a Double Whammy

Well what a difference a day makes. On Wednesday I was worried that Justin Trudeau was being too nice to the Cons.

And warned him it would get him nowhere.

But yesterday Justin and his government more than made up for that momentary lapse.

By delivering two more crushing blows to Stephen Harper's foul legacy.

And they must have REALLY hurt, because the two that went down for the count were so HIM.

First the Liberals restored refugee health benefits.

Starting in April, Ottawa will fully restore health-care coverage for all refugees and asylum claimants to the pre-2012 levels, before cuts were made by the previous Tory government.

Thursday’s announcement means refugees and asylum seekers in Canada will all have access to basic health care similar to provincial health-care insurance, as well as supplemental services such as vision and urgent dental care and prescription drugs that are available to Canadians on government assistance.

Which is great. Firstly, because most of the Syrian refugees we are taking in, unlike many of those who headed for Europe, are the poorest refugees in the region.

They have exhausted their meagre savings, and have no money...

And secondly, because the idea of depriving ANY sick people of proper medical care could only have come from the diseased mind of Stephen Harper, and his depraved monsters in the PMO...

So it must have been a real slap in the face.

Especially since it can only remind Canadians that he didn't cut those benefits to save money.

He did it so he could lie like a thief, act like beast...

To try to whip up hatred against helpless refugees for crass political purposes.

Which is also what Harper did in the shameful case of Omar Khadr who Harper pursued like a vengeful beast.

For the sole purpose of satisfying his bloodthirsty base...

So this too must have hurt.

A court appeal launched by the former Conservative government seeking to rescind bail for Omar Khadr has been dropped by the Liberals as a part of the government's commitment to "review its litigation strategy."

In April 2015, an Alberta judge granted bail to Khadr pending the outcome of his appeal in the U.S. for his war crimes conviction. He was released on bail on May 7 last year.

Conservatives appealed immediately after he was granted bail, the Conservative government said it would appeal the judgment in an effort to keep Khadr behind bars.

Considering how much Harper wanted to jail Omar, or torture him...

As only a depraved sadist could.

And all I can say is I'm extremely impressed with the way the Justin Trudeau and his Liberals are demolishing the Harper Con legacy...

And I can only imagine how Stephen Harper must be feeling. Or screaming.

So much gone, so soon. WAAAAAAAH!!!!

Which of course is music to my ears.

So let's keep up the good work.

Until there's nothing left but rubble...

It's strange to see the Canadian government behaving with decency and rationality after ten years of the Harper regime. I never understood the mad vindictiveness of the Cons against Kadhr, except that there was a victim that they could bully more.

As far as I could see, any sign of weakness in a person or a group was a sign for Harper and his government to attack. I believe this works well for predators on the Serengeti. Pity it was the modus operandi of the government of a major country.

Harper seems the epitome of what the psychologist Bob Altemeyer calls a high high Social Dominance, high Right Wing Authoritarian personality. This is not a nice combination as we have seen.

.. well done, Simon.. & the comment from jrkrideau resonates .. Not enough people recognize or recognized the problem of ex PM Stephen Harper. Over the last 10 years, I had the opportunity to supervise interviews with leading healthcare professionals & KOP's (key opinion leaders) and stakeholders.. especially in regard to mood disorders and mental health.. When possible I took the opportunity while packing up gear.. to ask informal questions re diagnosis, obvious signs, behavior patterns etc.. and surprisingly, these clinicians used well known celebrities, politicians etc as examples. I would always ask what they surmised of Stephen Harper, Jason Kenney, John Baird, Peter Kent etc etc.. and their eyebrows always twitched.. a cunning smile was seen.. and a polite disclaimer.. then a humerous diagnostic parable.. usually veering toward psychopathy and narcissism with omnipotence - hiding in plain sight

Those mean spirited questions from my ex Con MP Hawn always got my goat, too.
I always thought there should be a third question.
SHOULD ALL CANADIANS RECEIVE THE SAME HEALTH, DRUG AND PENSION BENEFITS AS THEIR MP'S ?

Interesting salamander, I have a tale too, tour of House of Commons, after hours few years ago. Cleaning crew had not come by, John Baird had an obvious cold and had left about twenty balls of snotty tissue on his little table top. It was cold season, but he was the only one to leave his viral waste for some poor cleaner to pick up. It fits with his public persona.

hi jrkrideau...It is indeed a pleasure to see a government acting like a Canadian government again. And yes the Harper regime was made up of bullies who saw decency as weakness. The Ambrose Cons still seem to think they can bully people, so they will have to be taught a lesson. Starting with we won, and they lost...

hi salamander...thanks and what you say is really interesting. I pegged Harper as a clinical psychopath long ago, but that alone can't explain his behaviour. He must be suffering from a cluster of other conditions, and I shudder to think what he might be doing now with the economy in such dire straits, if we hadn't defeated him. I don't think a lot of people realize what a bullet we dodged for it could have been a real nightmare...

hi hinofan...on the pension question alone, no MP should be against enhancing the CPP considering the generous pensions they receive. The retirement picture, and the drug situation is absolutely critical, so I am glad that now that the Cons have been defeated our politicians are finally examining those questions. For if they don't millions of Canadians will be condemned to lives of misery...

hi rumleyfips....that's a good one. I can see Lurleen trying to do that , but only after all the other cats have been fed... ;)

it is very nice to see our country going back to normal. Made me feel good.

it just seemed so sick that steve and his crew wanted to deny sick people and children health care; that they left it up to provincial governments and individual doctors to provide services for free.

Happy about Khadr. A few bills to pass parliament and we're almost back to normal. Once the Inquiry into First Nations murdered/missing women is under way, we have a chance again of being what we were 9 years ago, only better this time.
