Well as we all know, yesterday was Valentine's Day, a day to celebrate love.

Even in that most unromantic of places, Parliament Hill.

But funnily enough the way the political parties marked the day, told us a lot about who they are.

They complained about the way Tom Mulcair and his party marginalized them during the last election, or treated them like children.

They complained about the way they were sent out to campaign with a boring, conservative-lite platform no young person could get excited about.

Or for that matter any Canadian of any age.

They wrote an open letter to the party demanding a new direction for the NDP, and a return to its left-wing values. 

But sadly when the moment of truth arrived, and the NDP youth wing finally got to meet their leader... 

Remembering Jack Layton and the New Orange Tsunami

It's hard to believe that it's now been four years since Jack Layton died, and the hopes of so many turned to sadness.

And yesterday evening, when I returned from the island to the ferry dock named after him, I paused for a moment before this statue in my neighbourhood.



I didn't stay long because I pass the statue almost every day. Anything I had to say I said long ago. Like thank you, or how cruel life can be.

But I did stay long enough to think that wherever that happy warrior's spirit roams, it must be singing. 

Because the orange wave he created in Quebec, is now becoming an orange tsunami.

For no government in Canadian history ever deserved to be attacked more than Harper and his depraved Con regime.

As I've been saying for quite a while the winds of change are sweeping across this country, and the latest EKOS poll only confirms that.

The NDP is still rising like a rocket.

It's lead over the other parties continues to grow.

And if an election was held tomorrow it would likely be in a position to form a minority government.

For weeks Tom Mulcair and the NDP have been climbing steadily in the polls, and it was clear that if that trend continued it was only a matter of time before they passed the other parties.

Well now they finally appear to have done it.

Other polls have documented the rise of the NDP.

But now one is suggesting the party is closing in on a majority.

Because I don't think he knows what he's doing, or even what year it is.

Joe Oliver won't table his next budget for two more weeks, but the federal finance minister announced today that he'll table a second bill this month — one to force future governments to keep their books in the black.

Why Progressives May Soon Be Forced To Work Together

There are few things that depress me more than the sight of progressives fighting each other.

As the NDP and the Liberals are doing these days.

Especially when I remember how close we once came to forming a Great Canadian Coalition, and bringing down Stephen Harper. 

And how great it felt to work together, before that dream was shattered.

And my only consolation is that when I look at the way the polls are going, I can see another coalition in the making.

I couldn't have asked for a better sight to pick up my sagging spirits.

In Stephen Harper's miserable Parliament, where democracy goes to die. Where there is all the time in the world to talk about war, but no time to talk about all those murdered and missing aboriginal women.

And absolutely no time or money for an inquiry into why that happened, why it keeps happening, again, and again, and again. 

And what can we do to stop this MASSACRE...

Stephen Harper and the Return of Parliament

After a long summer break Parliament returns on Monday, and all the political parties are revving up their engines. 

A splashy, campaign-style launch for the government's fall agenda, a surprise tax cut for small business owners, a brand new NDP battle cry and a prime-time speech from Justin Trudeau: welcome to the 2015 election season. 

With Parliament poised to resume on Monday, all three main political parties are clearly revving their political engines on the road to the next vote, currently scheduled to take place some 12 months from now.

For it will mark the official beginning of the next election campaign and Stephen Harper couldn't make that clearer by turning the occasion into a party.

And this time he's not just running from his foul voter suppression monster, which is threatening to swallow engulf him.

He's running from the NDP !!!! 

Mulcair and the Orange Juggernaut

I knew that the NDP's support in Quebec would improve as soon a Tom Mulcair became leader. 

Nobody hates the Con regime more than Quebecers do. And they know a fighter when they see one.

But this is still stunning. 

The NDP Defector and the Headwinds of Change

I notice that some of the trees in Toronto have started sprouting buds, fooled by the unusually warm weather into thinking that Spring has arrived in January.

And no doubt feeling like many Liberals are feeling today. 

But I know an icy wind will soon sweep in and freeze those buds off the branches. And as someone whose only partisan goal is to defeat Stephen Harper's ghastly Cons, I see trouble ahead for all of us.

As I've said before I don't really want to discuss the NDP leadership race until all the candidates have declared, and I've heard what they have to say.

But since Brian Topp seems to be leaving the impression that The Force is with him because he's smart, which he is, and ...um...a good backroom boy.

Even though he's not elected, there's no guarantee he will be elected, and he's to put it politely, charismatically challenged. Zzzzzzzzzz.

And since Dr Dawg is touting Paul Dewar because he is a nice guy.

In an earlier post I noted Paul’s disarming debating skills—as in this video, wherein he easily bests Conservative pitbull John Baird, but with infectious good humour, not angry confrontation.

That’s the sort of thing that makes older Canadians wish they had a fine, well-mannered son like that. Paul’s style hearkens back to the civility that Canadians used to take for granted, inside the House of Commons and in everyday life.

Even though he's not bilingual. And we've all seen how nice guys fare with the Cons:

I thought I could and probably should contribute a small measure of reality.

The Angus Reid Public Opinion poll released Friday shows that 28 per cent of Canadians would cast a ballot for the NDP if Mulcair (Outremont) were leader, with 52 per cent of Quebecers saying the same.

Twenty-five per cent of Canadians would vote for the NDP if it was led by veteran party strategist Brian Topp, with only 31 per cent of Quebecers on board.

Oh sure, I know it's only an online poll. But this too I know: Thomas Mulcair may have his flaws, but he is the best Parliamentary fighter I have ever seen... in both official languages.

I have seen him disembowl one Parti Quebecois cabinet minister after the other in the National Assembly, and serve him or her up steaming hot, with apples in their mouths. So who knows what tasty dish he could make of Stephen Harper and his Cons? Or what fine wine he might serve with that hog stew? Mmmmm...YUMMY.

Although I do know that if there is the slightest perception that the gangbang against Mulcair is an anti-Quebec thing, or that English Canadians are preparing to turn their backs on Quebecers again. NDP support in that province will be back where it once was, quicker than you can say Jack or Tabarnac.

The way I see it, since none of the progressive parties can do ANYTHING to stop the Cons from implementing their reactionary policies. Or as we say in Canadian, do fuck all about it eh?

The mission of any progressive leader, NDP or Liberal, man or woman, is to DESTROY the Cons up until the moment we can flush their soggy remains down the toilet.

Together.

Anything else is just a delusion. Anti-Quebec feeling is already poisoning this country, it should not cloud our judgement.

The NDP doesn't need another saint. It already has one.

It needs a fighter who doesn't take prisoners...

The Ugly Cons and the Broken Liberals

OK. Let me get this straight eh? The Con smear machine that destroyed Ignatieff and Dion, goes after Brian Topp.

“Topp is a union boss and has deep union ties,” they say in a memo to MPs and party faithful. “How could Brian Topp speak on behalf of all Canadians, when he is so tied to big union special interests.”

As if being a union supporter was something to be ashamed of, instead of a badge of honour.

In Ontario, the racist Con teabagger Tim Hudak gets down on all fours and crawls through the gutter in a desperate attempt to boost his sagging ratings, by appealing to our  basest instincts

Even though police say his Made in Amerika plan would make us all less safe.

OPP Commissioner Chris Lewis has warned making the registry public could lead to vigilante action by citizens against convicted sex offenders living in the community.

“I totally disagree with Mr. Hudak on this,” Lewis said recently in a television interview. “In the U.S. states where they do it, it doesn’t necessarily lend itself to greater adherence to the legislation. We have almost 100 per cent compliance rate in this province with our sexual offender registry because they’re not online.”

In Toronto, the crass Con Rob Ford prepares to wage war on the sick, the poor, and the young. Even though the only gravy is in his head and his cavernous bowels, and his proposals would turn a livable city into a sinister jungle.

Fewer medical calls from fire fighters. A smaller police force. Reduced TTC service. Death of the “Hardship Fund” that provides medical services for the city’s poor.

And with all this going on some Liberals are more concerned about THIS?

Oh boy. How petty partisan can they be? Why are so many Liberals attacking the NDP instead of the Cons? Why aren't they healing their own wounds? How broken must be their party.  

For the record, I march to the sound of my own drum.

And I don't consider this message to be an exclusively NDP thing...

Don't let them tell you it can't be done.

I consider it a message of hope for ALL progressives, in a very dark time in our country's history.

Oh sure. Maybe I and all the others who were moved and encouraged by that message are too idealistic for a cynical and tired Canada that is rotting from the head down.

But don't underestimate us, for we did hear the message, and it did move us so much.

We wrote many of our own...

The rain may have washed them away. But this too is our message: Nobody, but NOBODY will stop us from keeping that promise. Or make us forget Jack that easily.

We WILL unite the best of us to eventually defeat the Cons.

And in the meantime, when it comes to politics in this country, and that goes for all progressive parties.

We're sick of the old grubby partisan game.

And we demand BETTER.
