As Canadians debate Stephen Harper's legacy, and the Cons and the Con media try to whitewash it beyond recognition. It's important to remember one of Harper's worst, and definitely most insane decisions. His decision to kill the long-form census.
It's been five long years since the Cons gutted the census, and left us stumbling in the darkness, unable to determine who we really are, or what kind of country we're really living in.
And while I'm happy to see it back, it still bothers me to see that Tony Clement, the Con who presided over the blinding of this country, has still not been held properly accountable.
It seems only fitting that on his last day as Con leader Stephen Harper should leave through a door darkly, while being humiliated over and over again.
In the same manner he ruled and humiliated this country, its people and their values, for nine nightmarish years.
First he had to humble himself before his shrunken caucus, by accepting the blame for the Conapocalypse that booted them all from office.
Then he was caught by some reporters making a quick getaway only a few minutes after ending his short speech.
Oh. My. Galileo. I see that a liberal backbencher's brave attempt to revive the mandatory long-form census, that Stephen Harper killed five years ago, has sadly but predictably failed. Liberal MP Ted Hsu’s drive to resurrect the long-form census has come to an end.
His private member’s bill to bring back the long-form census and bolster the independence of the chief statistician was voted down on second reading in the Commons on Wednesday. And for the same reasons Harper gave back then, when he ordered that it be destroyed.
If you want to understand what Stephen Harper is trying to do to Canada you can't focus on each individual atrocity he commits, no matter how painful the bite. You have to focus on the whole ghastly web he is spinning, to understand that his main target is the TRUTH. Take this latest report for example.
The newly released numbers from the 2011 census reveal a wide, demographic chasm between the nation’s poor — those whose annual income falls well below the $27,000 median figure for an individual— and the richest in Canada. Not only does it show that the Canadian dream is just a myth, and that Stephen Harper is no economist. It also turns out we can't fully trust the figures.
I've never seen a summer like this one. So grey, so cold, so ominous. And as it turns out so Harperland eh? For more proof today that if Great Ugly Leader has his way we'll all end up living in perpetual darkness.
He had done a lot of monstrous things, before he woke up one morning and decided to gut the census. For no sane reason. But for me it marked the moment when Stephen Harper crossed the desert of twisted ambition, and entered the dark valley of his personal demons. For it was that crazy, and look what that maniac has done to us now.
You know I spend so much time warning people that Stephen Harper is a bully, a political thug, and a dangerous maniac, I sometimes forget to mention the obvious.
Ladies and gentlemen, it’s my job to be blunt. So I’ll just say it: Stephen Harper is incompetent.
I know that’s not his reputation. Lots of people accuse him of being ruthless, or an ideologue, but he’s usually credited with being a basically competent manager.
He doesn’t deserve that credit.
A man so incredibly incompetent he would gut bludgeon a census with a sledgehammer because he claimed it's an invasion of privacy.
Or whatever the voices in his head told him to say that day...
Only to replace it with something even MORE intrusive.
With registry-based data systems, every person is given a government ID number, required by law to register a raft of personal data, and further required to constantly notify the government of any change in address, job, family relations, car ownership, etc. And all this information is linked and centralized.
In short, anyone who thinks the mandatory census is unacceptably intrusive should find this positively Communist.
OMG. And I thought he was a fascist eh?
To be clear, there’s nothing wrong with questioning the census or any other status quo. Indeed, it’s always good practice to consider the relative merits of alternatives.
But as any reasonably competent manager knows, you do that before, not after, you pick up the sledgehammer and smash stuff.
Who after he fools dumb Canadians into giving a majority, plans to put down the hammer and pick up a chainsaw...
And sawslash mutilate Canada beyond recognition.
Which I guess proves my original point eh?
He may be an idiot, and a hopeless incompetent. But he's also a dangerous MANIAC.
And in a country full of dummies.
The sooner we get rid of him, the safer we'll ALL be....
Of all the ghastly things the foul Harper regime has done, killing or gutting the census has to be among the worst.
Because it was an act of pure ideological madness that thrust us into the darkness of ignorance, and will forever damage the story of this country. Where we won't even know who we are.
At the time, the moron sock puppets Maxime Bernier and Tony Clement claimed that they had been deluged by thousandsmany some complaints from ordinary citizens.
Well now we know who those complainants were, and sure enough they're NUTS.
One concerned Canadian told StatsCan officials that in the “1940s the United States used census to find and detain Japanese people living in the country” and said “I wouldn’t be surprised” if the government in Ottawa did the same. The U.S. has denied this allegation.
Another stated: “I recently received the census to fill out. I am totally shocked at the type of questions being asked. The whole thing looks like it was written by the Nazis. This form goes way beyond what information is required for services in the community.”
Great eh? The Cons claimed they had a duty to listen to those tea baggers, while ignoring the views of so many other far more reasonable Canadians.
But of course it doesn't really matter. Those complaints were just a smoke screen.
Because everybody knows that the crazed decision to mutilate the census came straight from the troubled mind of Stephen Harper himself.
In most healthy democracies, a Prime Minister who dismembered something as vital as the census, because the voices in his head commanded him to do something completely irrational, would be suspended from office pending a mental health examination.
Because who knows what he might do next eh?
Who or what could those voices command him to attack tomorrow?
The pension system, medicare, human rights?
Or just fluoridation?
Because with Stephen Harper you never know eh?
One moment he's a plastic dolly.
The next moment he's a MANIAC.
Sadly, in this country, before we can have him committed, we have to defeat him first.
The other day I wondered whether Stephen Harper would ever be able to get a heart. And I said I doubted it. Because there are some things even Wizards can't do.
Now the question is can Maxime Bernier find a brain? And the answer is still NO.
Michael Ignatieff’s team has produced a letter from 2006 in which then-industry minister Maxime Bernier provides a strong defence of the mandatory long-form census. And the Liberals are hailing it as proof the government’s decision to scrap the form is based on ideology alone.
He goes on to explain that the questions are “essential for providing the information needed by governments, businesses, researchers and individual Canadians to shed light on issues of concern to all of us – employment, education, training, transportation, housing, immigration, income support, pensions for seniors, transfer payments, aboriginal issues and many more.” Because if the bozo from the Beauce could find a brain, after coming up with the idea to destroy a census he once called ESSENTIAL.
Tony Clement might be able to ask the Wizard for some self respect, and let's face it that's IMPOSSIBLE.
Clement: "I can't quantify. Even if there's one complaint, if it's a legitimate complaint, even if there's one complaint from a Canadian about the coercive tactics used by a government agency we have to consider that complaint a valid question about public policy."
Barton: "Sure, but we don't change public policy for one person do we?"
Clement: "Why not? If they're right."
Barton: "We change public policy for one person?"
Clement: "If they're right."
Oh boy. I've said it once, and I'll say it again. You can't defend the indefensible.
The decision to gut the census is a reckless act of ideological sabotage, by a group of alien Cons and their crazed leader.
It's going to hurt Canada, and it's going to KILL them...
Golly. I don't know why but I'm feeling musical today.
An Industry Canada employee questioned Conservative MP Maxime Bernier's claims in July that as minister he received about 1,000 complaints a day about the mandatory long-form census, internal documents obtained by CBC News show.
Industry Canada's "internal survey of correspondence did not show anything close to a thousand a day," he wrote to Statistics Canada's Connie Graziadei, adding in brackets "we got a standard 25-30 a year."
But then why are we surprised? When Maxie was the guy who came up with the idea to gut the census.
Only to make the Cons look like idiots, and LIARS. And Stephen Harper look like a MANIAC.
Golly. Gimme a Jos Louis !!!!! Maxie I LOVE you !!!!!!
Who knew it? The census. The issue that just won't go away.
It was such a sweet moment. One week to the day when they lost the gun registry vote, there was the Con regime getting another democratic slap in its fascist face.
The regime will of course ignore the will of Parliament. And its crazed leader Stephen Harper will no doubt use the vote to claim he is fighting some sinister coalition.
And I hope he does. In fact I'm counting on it. Because NOTHING could make the idea of a coalition appear more attractive to Canadians, than the sight of the Cons trying to strangle, stab, or shoot a coalition like this one.
Not when that list just keeps getting longer and longer.
"We believe that the decision by the federal government to eliminate the census long form was a mistake and that it will impact negatively on the provision of services to the people of our provinces."
Not when the insane act of gutting the census affects so many, from businesses, universities, and city planners, to pensioners, poor people, and cancer patients.
Not when it has revealed the Cons to have IQs somewhere in the murky zone between pigs and plants.
I am sure that the member opposite will agree with me when I say that it is ridiculous to put honest citizens in jail for refusing to say how many bedrooms they have in their houses or even what kind of cereal they eat in the morning.
Not when it has exposed the real and disturbing face of the monster himself.
Shown him to be a bestial political thug, who would put his foul ideology before the lives of Canadians. And allowed us to hear the angry voices in his helmet head.
"He amassed executive power on an unprecedented scale and often uses it in a manner more befitting a despot than a democrat. 'Gangster politics' someone called it. Or peace, order, and hood government."
Oh yeah. Let Stephen Harper scream about that nasty coalition and sound even crazier.
The Conservatives should know – and when they pause to think, they do know – that the Canadian public is not gullible. They cannot persuade the electorate or win their desired majority by repeating the word “coalition” again and again.
But I'm putting my money on the Great Canadian Coalition of the Reasonable. Because I think it's going to BURY those dirty Cons.
So bring on an election. I can hardly wait eh?
I can't wait to hear all those other angry voices screaming in the darkness. We don't know what we're doing, and we can't plan ANYTHING, because we don't have enough information !!!!
Or even better. They tied granny to a chair because they had no idea they would need so many beds !!!
Oh no. Poor Stephen Harper. Nothing seems to be working out for him these days. Somebody PLEASE take that gun away from him before he shoots the census, an invisible criminal, the equally invisible Separatist Coalition. Or just HIMSELF.
Not that I would blame him eh?
I mean how long can you defend the indefensible decision to gut the census, or try to portray the progressive parties as a mortal threat to Canada, without looking and sounding like a maniac?
The Conservatives slammed their political rivals as a "coalition" ready to ride roughshod over privacy rights, as the three opposition parties backed a motion Tuesday to revive the mandatory long-form census.
Or a loser getting ready to lose another vote in the House of Commons tomorrow, exactly one week after he lost the one on the gun registry. And shot himself in the footass.
Mr. Graves argues that the fight over the long-gun registry is not a ballot issue for many Canadians. Rather, he notes the gun registry, when taken in concert with other Tory missteps – scrapping the mandatory long-form census, excluding abortion rights from the maternal health initiative and the treatment of the veterans ombudsman – “has been reshaping the Canadian political landscape.”
You know Frank Graves is right. Too many in our mediocre media tend to focus on the Con outrage of the day. They forget the cumulative factor. Forget that the gun registry issue was just the latest stinky sauce on a meal full of maggots.
A maggoty meal that they are trying to shove down our throats like the Con zombie Tony Clement was doing yesterday:
"We have been open, we have been reasonable, we have been honest," he said. "We have tried to find a reasonable balance between the coercion that the opposition loves to enforce on Canadians, but getting the useful and usable data without having those threats of jail time and massive fines against our fellow Canadian citizens."
When every single WORD was just another Big Lie. They haven't been open, they haven't been reasonable, they haven't been honest, they haven't tried to find a reasonable balance. All they've done is lie and destroy, act like madmen, and take us for IDIOTS.
Who do these crazed alien ideologues think we are? When is enough ENOUGH?
And good for our wonderful French-speaking citizens from the Federation des Communautes Francophones et Acadienne du Canada for calling the Cons VANDALS. Because that's exactly what they are. Vandals sacking our country.
Oh boy. You know the other day in a post about the ridiculous pitbull pussycat John Baird, I said we really need to set the dogs on those feral Cons.
But now I realize those performing dogs were far too classy for them.
Now I want every progressive person in this country to get ready to kick ass in the next election.
So the Cons feel like we're setting THESE dogs on them.
I don't know about you eh? But I don't want to see those Cons just slightly defeated.
I know people say I go on and on about the madness that is Stephen Harper's government. But what else can you say about a government that when called upon to defend its insane decision to gut the long form census, can only summon these kind of witnesses?
A guy who admits he's never even seen one, a farmer who doesn't know what he's talking about.
James Henderson, a farmer who also spoke in favour of scrapping the mandatory long-form census, said the process was not only burdensome, but also costly.
Under further questioning, however, it emerged that it was not the long-form census but the census of agriculture that required the services of accountants to complete. That census remains mandatory.
And a radio talk show host who doesn't know why he's there.
Hey the politicians must be desparate. I have been “invited” to appear at the Industry Committee in Ottawa about the census long form. Why?
Or how about Our Lady of the Rednecks, Candice Hoeppner, who is trying to kill the gun registry and says an RCMP report, the Cons are concealing, won't make any difference.
“I don’t believe any of these reports make any difference whatsoever,” said Ms. Hoeppner. “It’s been years of mismanagement and waste and there’s not going to be a report that changes our minds.”
Because hey she may be an ignorant redneck, and as dumb as a spoon, but she knows better. So there.
And then of course, there is Stephen Harper claiming he is nation-building, even as the country shrinks.
During Mr. Harper’s visit, a huge chunk of ice, estimated to be the size of Bermuda, fell off the country’s largest remaining ice sheet, on Ellesmere Island.
Or claiming he wants to save the Inuit AND the belugas.
When in fact he's planning to drown them all in a sea of oily goodness.
I mean what can you say about that eh?
Except that this beluga must be really disappointed.
Because it was love at first sight. But now he says Harper can forget about rubbing his blow hole, and blow himself instead.
And of course I agree. I'm just sickened by what these Cons are doing to my country. And I'm worried about what that tin pot dictator might do next to try to fool Canadians into thinking he's a nation builder...and almost human.
Because at this point I believe he's capable of ANYTHING.
So if I lived in Saskatchewan I'd be REALLY worried...
Golly. You know I always knew the madness was incremental.
I don't usually enjoy watching Stephen Harper on TV. But there he was today standing in front of a bus with a big GO sign on it. Looking like hell, drinking like a fish. And telling reporters no job lasts forever.
So I quite enjoyed it eh?
He was talking about the ombudsman he fired let go for daring to criticize the government. But he might as well have been talking about himself. Because when vets accuse you, Napoleon Harper, of abandoning the troops.
And the conservative purist Andrew Coyne accuses you of running a "uniquely nasty know-nothing" government. And of being a political idiot.
After so many miscues, unforced errors, too-clever tricks and utter botch-ups, does anyone still cling to the “strategic genius” view of Stephen Harper?
And his fellow Christianist Lorna Dueck feels obliged to lecture him on the census and the Bible.
Numbers were going to be needed for Moses and his leaders to understand all that would be required to create community and the structures that would nurture and sustain it.
Like Moses’s nemesis the Pharaoh, the federal government has turned a deaf ear.
You know it won't be long before he'll be forced to jump on that bus...or Pharaoh's camel... and ride it all the way back to Alberta.
Funnily enough it's Dueck who comes closest to nailing the real reason Harper gutted the census. And that is because that deeply disturbed man hates the idea of community more than anything else on earth.
He's suffered from asthma all his life, so he wasn't able to play team sports. He was always an outsider looking in. A weird, smart but emotionally stunted person, who came to believe he could create his own reality.
Over the years his bitter resentment grew, and so did his hatred of any kind of group or community.
That's why he spent fourteen years trying to destroy medicare, that's why one of the first things he did was kill the Court Challenges program. That's why he wants to gut the welfare state, and change Canada beyond recognition.
Because for Harper life is a jungle, and the truth is what he says it is. Or ELSE.
Yup. Other issues like the Fake Lake may have more impact with ordinary voters. But the census is the issue that ripped off his mask, and showed us who he really is...
I warned you that he wasn't who he pretended to be. That the man was an anti-social monster. And that sooner or later the voices in his head would become too loud to ignore.
Well I see Paul Wells agrees with Stephen Taylor's explanation for Stephen Harper's apparently insane decision to gut the census.
Stephen Harper seeks to diminish or destroy the Liberal Party to replace them with the Conservatives as Canada’s default choice for government. His greatest challenge is to dismantle the modern welfare state. If it can’t be measured, future governments can’t pander.
— Blogger Stephen Taylor, July 22.
His ORIGINAL explanation. Because as Wells points out he seems to have changed his tune:
Since July 22 this whole business has gotten too hot for Stephen’s liking and in his blog and on Twitter he’s joined the nobody-cares crowd, arguing that this whole business is an invention of the “push media,” by which he means news organizations that cover a story he doesn’t like for longer than he likes.
Now suddenly it's NOT a brilliant move by the Great Dark Lord to change Canada beyond recognition by plunging us into the abyss of ignorance. It's just a media invention.
Golly. Who said these Cons are incremental? Didn't the HarperCon War Room like Taylor's frank analysis? Isn't he one of their own?
I still standby my thesis that I believe that chucking mandatory nature of the long-form is a move to dismantle the welfare state (and that this is a move in the right direction). And two, nobody cares outside of the beehive. It’s the media that is pushing the story outside of the beehive walls propelled by the loud buzz of special interests.
Yes believe it or not he STILL thinks that Stephen Harper is gutting the census so he can kill the welfare state. But says that's not important eh? Because only the bees in the beehive care about the future of Canada. Huh? I mean Bzzzzzzz?????
So now I'm thinking what kind of parallel universe are these Cons inhabiting? Do they really believe that they can fool sane Canadians into thinking that the census is not important ? Make them believe that ignorance is STRENGTH?
And BTW what have they got against bees?
As for my trouble-making behaviour, I make no apologies. Sometimes it’s fun to throw rocks at beehives.
Although I suppose that one's OBVIOUS...
Bees are peaceful creatures, who put their community before their own individual needs, help feed the world, and are a model society in their own humble way, just like Canada used to be.
So naturally the Cons hate them.
Which reminds me of this video I once saw eh?
A peaceful little bee community is happily making honey.
And then the nasty hornets arrive...
Hey, as I always say, if you can't visualize what Stephen Harper is planning to do to Canada use your imagination. I do. So now I only have TWO questions:
Will Stephen Taylor have to have his posts vetted by the PMO for being too honest?
And when can we smoke these Con hornets out of Ottawa?
Golly. I love Lawrence Martin but I can only hope he was having a bad day when he wrote this.
Mr. Harper’s priorities bring back images of a 1950s Canada. There’s a big focus on family values, pride in the armed forces, the monarchy, the Arctic, law and order, hockey, unintrusive government, low taxes. The vision is the true north strong and free and – with respect to its supreme ruler – on bended knee.
Because he may be right about the bended knee part, but he's definitely wrong about this:
Critics say the Prime Minister is in an ideological time warp, but the time slot isn’t all that bad. The 1950s were one of the better decades.
Because from what I've read the 1950s was no golden era. Women were second class citizens, abortion was illegal, gays were criminals, people were being hanged, the country was so white you had to wear sunglasses when you went out ...whether it was sunny or not.
And things only started to change for the better when the sixties finally arrived. And drove Harper over the deep end.
In the Harper view, Canada was great until the 1960s, when Quebec, the most leftish province, took over the agenda and a series of prime ministers from that province set the country on a welfare-state course. In beholding this, the square was not a happy camper. When he came to power, he was prepared to go to extraordinary measures – treating democracy like a rat at the door – to undo the damage.
Which does make sense....if you can understand Krazy.
But surely that's not Father Knows Best.
Lawrence must have confused it with this movie...
You know, as in we'll make you a census....or a jungle... you can't refuse.
Because Harper IS a deeply disturbed control freak and the rat at the door. His grotesque Cons ARE political thugs, misogynists, racists and homophobes. They WOULD take us back to a darker time.
Daddy !!! Daddy !!! Ratty !!!! Ratty !!!
And the sooner we get our act together and jail them defeat them.
Oh boy. I suppose it's only fitting that after dodging the question for weeks, Stephen Harper should be forced to admit that gutting the census was HIS idea, in what looks like the bottom of an aquarium.
With an infatuated beluga gliding by in the background chirping "Hey Tuna, take off your clothes, jump on my back, and scratch my blow hole."
I know some people think the appropriate way to deal with that is through prosecuting those individuals with fines and jail terms. This government will not do that.
From a Prime Minister who wants to spend billions building new prisons, and jail even more Canadians by inventing new crimes.
The changes requested by Clement's staffers make it appear the decision to scrap the long-form census was not made by the government.
It wasn't until reporters started writing about the census changes that the government admitted it was responsible for the decision.
From a government that lies about EVERYTHING.
I mean what CAN you say? Except that this situation is INSANE.
John Geddes insists there's method to the madness.
On another key Tory policy theme—law and order—Brodie touted conflict with academics as good politics. Most university criminologists say there’s no evidence to back up the Tories’ heavy emphasis on imposing longer prison terms. They point to studies showing that more jail time doesn’t reduce crime.
At the McGill panel, though, Brodie said voters tend to side with Conservatives when they argue with “sociologists, criminologists, defence lawyers and Liberals” about prison terms. “Politically, it helped us tremendously,” he said, “to be attacked by this coalition of university types.”
So not only do Harper’s advisers suspect that following expert advice leads to unsaleable policies, they also think battling the experts can boost their popular standing
But it doesn't make any difference to me whether this madness comes straight from the collective anus of the ideological fanatics in the Con war room. Or from the voices in Stephen Harper's headgenes.
Madness is madness. A thug government that rejects reality, and lies about EVERYTHING, is unfit to govern.
And the sooner we unite to defeat these crazy Cons, the better, the safer, and the SANER we will be.
Oh boy. It's been this kind of day. Stockwell "Doris" Day tries to prove we need to spend billions on new prisons without any facts.
Given that Day seemed to suggest, in response to an earlier question, that census data becomes "untenable" a year or two after it was initially collected, it's hard to see how he would become "alarmed" by victimization reports from six years ago.
Rob "Man Dingo" Nicholson tries to clarify the Con position without thinking what he's saying.
Unlike the Liberals, we do not use statistics as an EXCUSE not to get tough on criminals. As far as our Government is concerned, one victim of crime is still one too many.
A spokeswoman for Justice Minister Rob Nicholson said the comments were backed by research from Statistics Canada that revealed a drop in the percentage of self-described victims who reported crimes that were committed against them.
However, Statistics Canada shot down the interpretation, saying that the data could not be compared to police-reported crime statistics since it only surveyed eight types of crimes as opposed to the hundreds of crimes investigated by police.
Well I see that Stephen Harper is about to return to work after spending the last few weeks in virtual isolation, getting his ...um... batteries recharged.
And no doubt getting ready to defend his shocking decision to gut the census. After having to be talked out of killing it.
The prime minister directed Industry Minister Tony Clement last winter to seek options from Statistics Canada on how it could make the long version of the census voluntary.
But sources say his circle's first instinct was to make the entire thing voluntary — both the short census and the now controversial long form.
Good luck. If I was him I'd plead insanity eh?
Because he's going to need all the sympathy he can get when Canadians get this pain in their wallets.
The Con Census: Now not just useless but more EXPENSIVE !!!
And BTW.... how are the Cons going to claim it's just a failure to communicate?
Conservative insiders are slowly acknowledging they haven't done a good job of persuading the public. They say communication of their reasons has been bungled from the beginning — first internally and then publicly.
The cost of running the prime minister's office will jump by over $1 million this year because of additional expenditures on communication.
Gawd. I knew that Stephen Harper lives in a world of his own...
But how many more gazillions of dollars are we supposed to spend to try to make him look good pretty?
Of course the BIG question now is whether Harper will be able to admit he was wrong. Tell Canadians he's just a wonky idiot who thought the census was inconvenient, because he didn't know what he was talking about.
Instead of a dangerous ideological maniac who would kill eat it if he could...
So he can plunge the country into the darkness of ignorance, and skin it beyond recognition.
Golly. I LOVE this story. Is it idiocy or is it insanity?
