The Homophobe and the Homeless

You might think that a church might be a safe place for homeless people to sleep.

Considering how hard their lives are, and how little they have, and everything Jesus said about that.

But not at this church in San Francisco.

The Bigot Rob Ford and the Homeless Gay Kids

OK. I know that only last night I strongly suggested that the time had come to ignore Rob Ford.

That since by now it has been clearly established that he is a crass bully, a vulgar misogynist, a low life thug, and a filthy bigot.

All that remained was to defeat him, humiliate him.

Or let nature takes its course...

If the Polar Bear God of the Great White North should choose to save us that way.

But I can't ignore this.

The Real Crimes of Rob Ford

If you don't live in Toronto you probably know Rob Ford as the callous, vulgar, Con buffoon, who doesn't know what he is doing, and is always getting into trouble.

But because he has no effect on your life, you can laugh, or shake your head, or shrug your shoulders at this latest democratic outrage.

Among auditors Bruce Armstrong and Glen Davison’s findings: the mayor’s campaign overspent by $40,168, or 3% of the $1.3-million limit; it received $6,000 in donations made by 11 corporations, but listed them as coming from individuals..

It found the campaign attributed $19,500 to a “Bromell” fundraiser that never took place and that the money was actually raised at a Building Industry and Land Development Association event.

But the sad part is that a lot of people who live in Toronto feel the same way.

Pat Martin and the Rat Faced Cons

Golly. I have no idea why Pat Martin called the Cons rat faced whores.

Martin launched into a Twitter tirade for the ages Wednesday night, calling the Conservative Party “rat faced whores” and attacking Public Safety Minister Vic Toews’ personal life to express his displeasure over not being invited to an announcement for a local infrastructure project.

I know they're always jumping into bed with foreign interests, for money. Or handing out cheese to their supporters. But can rats OINK?

When Assaulting the Homeless is Funny

I don't know whether this video of some loser apparently urinating on an unconscious homeless person is real.

The video that lasts 27-seconds shows a young man approaching a man sleeping on the sidewalk outside what appears to be Toronto's Eaton Centre.

With his back to the camera he appears to urinate on the sleeping man while his friends can be heard laughing off-camera. The victim doesn't react and appears to remain asleep as his head and hair are soaked.

Or a sick hoax.

Rob Ford and the Big Lie

Well at least we know one thing eh? When Rob Ford called 911 because he felt threatened by the comedian Marg Delahunty. And then used the F-word when talking to a dispatcher, because police didn't come quickly enough.

It wasn't because they didn't know where he lived.

According to numerous police and emergency service sources, 911 calls to the mayor’s Edenbridge Dr. home are a reality for the South Etobicoke division. Exactly how many calls have been made is unknown.

Now I don't give a damn what goes on in the Ford household. In fact I'd rather not think about it.

The Occupy Movement and the Coal Mine Canaries

By the time I made it down to the Occupy Toronto campsite this weekend it was getting dark. There seemed to be more tents than ever, but although they were celebrating their one-month anniversary, the mood was definitely subdued.

Maybe it's because they can see the writing on the wall.

Maybe it's because many of the 500 or so occupiers are poorer and more desperate than the ones at the beginning.

You can see it in the hungry faces of the people getting something to eat at the food tent...

The Occupy Movement and the Marginalized

I see the Mayor of Vancouver is using a tragic drug overdose to justify evicting the city's Occupy protesters.

"I have directed the city manager to expedite the appropriate steps to end the encampment as soon as possible with a safe resolution being absolutely critical to that," Mayor Gregor Robertson said Saturday night.

Even though everyone knows that a similar death could happen anywhere in Vancouver. In any other park, in a cheap hotel, in a squalid alley. Because it happens ALL the time.

And everyone knows that excuses are a dime a dozen, when every Mayor has a different reason, but the same goal : It's time to clear those "undesirables" out of OUR public spaces, and if the Canadian winter won't do it, we will

The Homeless Man and the Dog

I am always moved when I see the special bond between a homeless person and his or her dog.

How they share what little they have with their pets. And how their dogs are oblivious to their miserable surroundings, and are just glad to be with the ones who love them.

Because I share a special bond with the homeless. Their condition makes me sad, and ashamed. And the cruel way they are often treated makes me wild with anger.

And of course, as you know, I love dogs eh?

So I found this story both sad and beautiful..

I'm glad that poor man was treated kindly before he died.

Because that's the way all human beings, whether they have a home or not, should be treated all the time.

And I'm happy his last wish came true. Because homeless people have dreams too.

As for the dog, I wonder as she sleeps in her fancy new home, whether she dreams of waking up in that car next to her friend.

Knowing dogs as I do.

I'm sure she does...

The Homeless Hero and Kylie Minogue

Of all the stories I read this week I think I liked this one the best.

How the homeless man became a hero, instead of just a guy who lives under a bridge.

And how the kid he saved went looking for him...... but couldn't find him.

And how it all ended happily today.

With some words of advice from one survivor to another.

"Stay in school. Don't become homeless," Hall told the teen, who has attended several schools and lived with several different relatives and a foster family.

Nice.

Which reminds me the week is over at last.

And it's time for some Kylie Minogue.

Why Kylie?

Because some people are luckier than others.

Heh heh heh..... Sorry Scott.

Have a great weekend everyone. !!!

My Excellent Christmas with the Homeless

Every year at this time Sébastien and I put together two haversacks full of goodies and deliver them personally to some of the many homeless people freezing on the streets of our city.

To make up for the Christmas presents they didn't get, to spread a little cheer, and above all to show that we care.

Because homelessness isn't just hard and cruel, and a country's shame. In Canada, in winter, it can be fatal.

And because I agree with this guy.

We've lost something in this country, I think. It happened in the past few years and it is particularly obvious in my neck of the woods. It's a loss of shame about the plight of others, fellow Canadians. Around the time that our armed forces became "warriors," not peacekeepers, something was unleashed. A sizable amount of vanity, greed and harshness of spirit.

I also feel that we're losing our precious Canadian values. That our hearts have grown so hard that we can't even see the misery around us.

That's why it's so good to read stories like this one.

And to know that there are other Canadians like Daniel who are trying to stop our country from becoming a jungle. By treating some of our most miserable and vulnerable fellow citizens like human beings instead of animals.

As for Sébastien and I ....we had a hoot. Because in addition to the shortbreads and chocolates, I also made up a giant batch of coffee....with BAILEYS. Now I'm not much of a drinker. And the smell of Baileys makes me nauseous. And Sébastien said I put too much in. But boy was it POPULAR !!

We got to hear some sad and funny stories from guys with names like Rufus, Chipper, and Bear. Sébastien was able to slip in some medical questions, and escort one guy to a nearby hospital to be treated for a horrible ulcer on his leg.

And I hope that for a moment at least some of these poor Canadians didn't just enjoy my special Christmas Blend....but also felt a little less lonely.

Of course none of this changes anything. Little acts of kindness aren't enough. Homelessness remains a cruel and shameful problem. We need more affordable housing, and better treatment facilities. We need to make that a priority EVERY day of the year.

But I guess what I'm trying to say is that if we're ever going to solve this horrible problem, first you've got to see the problem....and the humanity. First you've got to feel the pain.

First you gotta care....

Stephen Harper, Mike Harris and the Real Crime

I took this picture in downtown Toronto the other day, near the St Lawrence Market. But I could have taken it just about anywhere, because the city is full of miserable, suffering, lonely, homeless people like this poor Canadian.

A lot of people are to blame for this crime against humanity. But if I had to blame the person MOST responsible I'd blame Mike Harris. The thuggish former Con Premier of Ontario who Stephen Harper is accused of plagiarizing.

Stephen Harper can deny the obvious plagiarism. He's a liar as well as a cowardly tool and a fraud. But what he can't deny is that Mike Harris and himself share exactly the SAME approach and the same evil and failed philosophy. That's the REAL crime.

They both came to power with one aim in mind. To destroy the power of government and turn society into a neocon jungle. To do that they made tax cuts their mantra. Or sent people small amounts of money in the mail. Until there was no money in government coffers. And they could use that as an excuse to cut goverment programs they didn't like.

Stephen Harper and his Finance Minister ....former Harris Con Jim Flaherty.... have taken us to the edge of a deficit, leaving us dangerously vulnerable as a brutal recession closes in.

Mike Harris left the province BURIED in debt. And the city of Toronto just a shadow of its former self. A city full of misery, despair, crime-ridden neighbourhoods, and crumbling infrastructure.

If Stephen Harper has his way the same fate awaits Canada. To elect a dangerous neocon ideologue like Harper Harris at a time like this, is not just RISKY beyond belief. Like playing Russian roulette with four bullets in the chamber. It's absolute
MADNESS.

That's the message Canadians NEED to hear. Harper as a good economic manager and tax cutter isn't just a Big Con Lie. It's a crazy illusion.

With deficits looming, perhaps catastrophically so, not to mention other mayhem, the era of tax cuts is over, no matter what the parties promise, either here or in the U.S. Furthermore, the utopian right-wing presumption that private action alone solves everything is also over – the U.S. bailout of the failed money creed putting paid to that. The fact is that we will now need wise government action to guide us through the shoals ahead.

The Harper government doesn’t believe in public action, wise or not. That’s a problem, but we may not know how much of a problem until after the election when government action is increasingly called for, but the Harper government, virtually alone in the world, is ideologically opposed to it.

It's probably too late for that poor man near the St Lawrence Market.

Or for this suffering Canadian.

But it's still not too late to save Canada from being turned into a heartless Con jungle.

The message to all Canadians in these last ten days must be......if you love our beautiful country.

Stephen Harper MUST be stopped....

The Homeless Kid and the Harper Majority

A while back I wrote a post about a young homeless guy who lived under the ramp of an expressway not far from where I live.

He's mentally ill and used to talk to himself loudly or sing. From time to time I would drop off a pizza, or some coffee and sandwiches. But I never got to meet him because when he saw me he used to run away.

And now I never will.

When I went by on my bike today I noticed the city had closed off the area.

With two big iron fences.

And for extra measure.

Lots of big rocks so no poor person can sleep there again.

Although, as is always the case.

All they succeeded in doing was moving their homeless problem.

Further down the street.

Don't you love the little houseplant?

Now I admit I'm an idealist. I get kidded a lot about it. Nobody cares about the homeless. Even my friends. If I didn't have a companion who is even more hopelessly idealistic than I am, I don't know what I'd do.

But I do know that I expect better from Canada my promised land. I expect our rulers to put every dollar they can get their fucking paws on to build cheap housing and treatment clinics for the mentally ill and the drug addicted. Instead of building fences.

So no Canadian has to live and suffer like that in a country as rich as ours.

Am I REALLY asking too much? That's what I thought politics or being a Canadian was all about. But now I wonder. There is after all a fine line between idealism and idiocy. I know because I cross it all the time.

And in a country where people seem prepared to give a heartless neo-con thug a majority.

So he can destroy what's left of our Canadian values and turn our country into a jungle. Just because they think a bully is a strong leader. Or they don't want to pay more for cheap gas.

I suppose ANYTHING is possible.

I'll never give up hoping for something better of course. Or fighting the miserable Cons. Or crossing that line.

But tonight I'm just depressed...

Canadians and the Mentally Ill

I have always wondered why so many Canadians are so callous about the suffering of the homeless. Especially since so many homeless people are mentally ill.

Now I know why.

Almost half of Canadians believe that a diagnosis of mental illness is merely an "excuse for poor behaviour and personal failings" and one in 10 thinks that people with mental illness could "just snap out of it if they wanted," according to the startling findings of a new opinion poll.

And I wish I didn't.

Who are these ignorant brutish Canadians? And why are there so many of them?

They should meet the miserable old woman in the little park, with her supermarket cart and her humble possessions. Sitting there in the rain. Who never says anything. No matter how hard I try.

Or the poor frightened young guy under the expressway who talks to himself all night. Who runs away when I bring him something to eat.

Then they might know what suffering is all about, shut their moron moralizing pie holes, and try to act like humans instead of beasts.

What kind of country are we becoming when so many people would beat up the poorest and the most vulnerable of Canadians....instead of helping them?

My guess is a coarse, ignorant, and self satisfied Oaf's Paradise that thinks it smells like roses.

But actually smells like SKUNK...

Sentencing the Moss Park Killers

It was just starting to rain in Moss Park this evening. Just like it did the night Paul Croutch was sleeping on a bench, wrapped in green garbage bags. When three soldiers came out of the armoury on the right and headed straight for him.

Two of them kicked and beat the helpless old man, damaged his brain, ruptured his spleen, broke six of his ribs. Until he lay there bloodied, shaking, shivering.... and dying. While a third one assaulted a woman who tried to help him.

One of the killers thrust his military tags in her face and screamed "This gives us the right to kill all the homeless bums, crackheads, whores."

Another one told her she was a dyke so she didn't count.

Today the three soldiers were sentenced.

Some may call that justice, or feel sorry for them. But I don't. I'm disgusted. I think they got away with murder.

It was a travesty of justice. A case of crime and mild punishment.

If they'd been found guilty of second-degree murder, they would have gone to jail for a minimum of 10 years with no possibility of parole. By contrast, manslaughter has no minimum sentence, and parole is often possible after serving one-third of the sentence.

It's hard to imagine these two young men getting such a lucky break if their victim hadn't been homeless.

Rather than a random act of drunken violence, the killing of Paul Croutch sounds almost like a hate crime against the homeless.

Which is why these cowardly fascist thugs should have been hit with the full force of the law.

But I'm not surprised they got off lightly. The contempt and/or indifference so many Canadians have for the plight of the homeless is a national disgrace.

They hate them even though they are the most miserable and vulnerable of Canadians. They call them bums and blame them for being poor. Even though many of them are mentally ill.

Just like Paul Croutch.

Until Canadians realize that homelessness can happen to everyone. And put pressure on governments to get serious about the problem i.e. build cheap housing and treatment centres.

The horror will just go on and on..

4:25 pm....King Street.... Toronto....this afternoon.

Are we really blind to this suffering? Are we really THAT callous?

Is this REALLY Canada?

The Killing of Paul Croutch

His name was Paul Croutch. He was 59 years old. Once he was a newspaper editor in B.C. But mental illness slowly stripped him of everything...his money...his health...his dignity. Until he became just one of the thousands of homeless people surviving on the mean streets of Toronto.

On the night of August 31, 2005, he was sleeping on a bench in a downtown park. It was raining, so he was wrapped from head to toe in green garbage bags to try to keep warm and dry.

When three soldiers came out of a nearby armoury and savagely beat him to death.

Three Canadian soldiers kicked Paul Croutch, a sleeping homeless man, "like a football," then assaulted a woman who tried to intervene, warning her that "bums" aren't welcome in Toronto's Moss Park

Deganis thrust his military dog tags into her face, "saying that they gave them the right to do whatever they wanted to her and all derelict homeless bums...."

"`Tell all your friends the park is ours. We own it.'

Croutch was taken to hospital unconscious and died later. The attack broke several of his ribs, tore his spleen and caused a fatal injury to his brain

And one more little ugly detail. When the homeless woman tried to stop the beating. one of the soldiers told her she was a "dyke....a useless waste of skin" ..... so she "didn't count."

I hate bullies of any kind so much this story makes me sick to my stomach. How could healthy young men beat a helpless sick old man to death just because he was poor and homeless?

And the fact that they were soldiers makes it even worse. What kind of human trash are our Canadian forces recruiting?

And how dare those fascist goons think that a public park belonged to them? When if anyone has a right to claim ownership of that miserable piece of real estate, it's the poor desperate Canadians who call it home.

And where did they get off judging a human being for the "crime" of sleeping on a park bench? When there's not enough cheap housing, or proper shelters for the homeless to sleep in. And homelessness can happen to anyone.

“What that means is that 64% of the people who stayed here were men who were experiencing short-term homelessness,” says Dion. “The housing and job markets are so fragile that most people experiencing homelessness in Toronto today are those who simply cannot find the means to pay the rent,”

If there was any justice the armoury would be closed, and turned into a community centre to treat and shelter people like Paul Croutch. So they wouldn't have to suffer like he did.

But then if there was any justice those cowardly criminals wouldn't have been able to cop a plea. As they did today.

When all the evidence showed that the assault was clearly planned.

Immediately before the attacks, a senior officer testified, Deganis was overheard saying he hated bums and homeless people and wanted to take them on.

What a travesty of justice.

Poor Paul Croutch. Everyone who knew him said he was a kind and funny man.

But he couldn't shake his illness...or the voices in his head...that told him bad people were coming to get him.

How sad and ironic that when he least expected it, as he lay there helpless on a park bench in the rain covered with green garbage bags, the bad people really did come for him. And he never knew what hit him or why.

One moment he was sleeping...maybe dreaming of happier times...the next moment he was screaming in pain....the next moment he was dead.

In a way of course, we're all responsible for his death and the deaths of so many others...for not demanding that our governments do more to help the poorest and most vulnerable Canadians.

As for those cowards who ended that poor old man's life so savagely, I hope they get the sentences they deserve. Because this wasn't just murder....it was a hate crime against the homeless.

And it would send out a message that all human life is precious. Whether you're rich or poor. Sleep in a mansion or on a park bench.

More Canadians need to hear that message. If the bad men finally came for Paul Croutch.

Let's hope something good will come of it ...

-----------------------------------------------------------------

P.S. Are we really sending soldiers like that to Afghanistan? How deep is the rot?

If they are as sick as that before they go....what awful crimes might they commit there?

And what will they be like when they come back?

Our Canadian forces. Keeping Canada safer. And bums out of our parks.

One body at a time...

---------------------------------------

P.P.S. Ok I take back those last two lines. As Sébastien points..... out it's not fair to blame everyone for what happened. So I'm sorry.

Although it does make you wonder about recruiting standards. And maybe the soldiers in the armoury could reach out to the poor people who live all round them. Tell them they're sorry about what happened.

And that it will NEVER happen again.

When you're poor and homeless those kind of small gestures can really mean a lot...

Secret Postcards and Homeless Gay Kids

I don't know why this postcard made me think of this story.

A new study says there are at least 3,800 people under the age of 25 living on the streets of New York and that almost 30 percent are gay, lesbian or bisexual.

The survey found that while many homeless youth went to city shelters 42 percent slept on the streets, subways or in empty buildings. Some, the study said, turned to prostitution trying to find a "trick" to spend the night with

Maybe it's because like bullying ....being thrown out of your home or being forced to leave and live on the street because of who you are or who you love....is a HIDDEN crime. Some can't see it. Others don't want to.

Even though in NYC it's been a growing problem for years.

With just two dozen beds available for gay, lesbian and transgender youth, they endure violence in the city's shelters, camp out in doorways in Harlem or pass the night at a 24-hour Internet cafe next to Disney's New Amsterdam Theater on 42nd Street. There, many of them trawl the Web for paying ''dates'' or try their luck on Christopher Street in the far West Village, where some quick work in a passing car might yield $30. ''You've got to do what you've got to do to survive,'' says Mr. Murray, who is 22 and has been turning tricks in the Village since he was 15.

And don't think it's any different in the big cities of Canada. Because it isn't. The gay kids are out there. But we can't see them ....or don't want to.

Especially when they turn up on the gentrified streets of our Gay Villages. Smoking crack, begging or bumming cigarettes. Or selling their bodies for a place to sleep.

And to make things even worse ... many of the kids themselves can't talk about what happened to them.

Because they feel bad about telling the truth.

Like sick people sometimes do...

As if the gay kids were the sick ones instead of those who bullied them at school. Or their own parents who threw them into the street.

So homophobia gets off lightly. Again.

Isn't it time society faced this problem and its cause...and did more to help ALL homeless kids....gay AND straight?

Isn't it time the gay community took more responsibility for the fate of our young people?

Or is it time for a riot?

P.S. For more postcards like those above check out the awesome Post Secret Project

And if you are a gay youth in Toronto you can get help at this excellent support centre.

The Attack of the Killer Panhandlers

As if we didn't have have enough things to worry about...like the Harperite Conspiracy or the war in Afghanistan...or all that Made in China stuff that baby likes to chew on...or the fact that the CNE begins on Friday..... and you know what that means?

Now we're quaking in our boots or shooting off our mouths about the Attack of the Killer Panhandlers.

Even though three of the four suspects are Americans.

And most of OUR panhandlers are harmless. The pussies of the panhandling world...or just typically Canadian...

The roar of the frightened mob has been deafening.

It's a disgrace. Something bad is going to happen in this neighbourhood if we don't start thinking about our rights as free-moving and safe citizens rather than the rights of the homeless...

Ban them, fine them, throw them in jail. Do ANYTHING just drive them off the streets. It all seems a bit crazy to me. Why can't they just pretend they can't see them or hear them?

Like they usually do.....

But of course it's more complicated than that.

Many formerly homeless people find that landing permanent shelter doesn't mean they can give up a street life, German said.

"Welfare doesn't pay enough to cover both rent and food, so they are forced to panhandle to eat."

The frightened mob can scream for blood all it wants, but until we deal with the root causes of the problem it will only get worse.

And if you pretend that you can't SEE the problem or just WISH it would go away. And you don't build enough cheap housing, or rely on a rotten shelter system, and you don't have aggressive and smart ways to deal with things like poverty, drug addiction, or mental illness, and you do nothing while our big cities become jungles with poor and desperate people everywhere...

Then WTF are you so surprised about when something jumps up and bites you? Or stabs you in the ribs.

I'm just surprised it doesn't happen more often. I can't understand why poor Canadians are so passive...why they don't demand more from Canadians than just quarters.

Why they don't understand that unless you organize and fight for your rights nothing ever happens...especially when others don't see you or hear you...

But when you're poor, and hungry, and thirsty, or drug addicted or mentally ill...and you have to worry about where they'll allow you to take a shit, or where you're going to sleep tonight...I guess just surviving is exhausting enough.

Which means that if we are really Canadians we should be thinking of new ways to HELP them instead of punishing them.

And reminds me....I'm going to take a few days off to try to think of new ways to help Alvaro Orozco.

Who is hiding somewhere in this city.

Because it's the same thing with him as it is with the homeless .

Whether you are discriminated against because you're poor, or whether you are discriminated against because you are gay.

Unless you fight back...and others help those who can't help themselves... nothing ever changes...

Which is a great excuse to run this song...by my favourite Canadian band...again. To get me in the mood....

Works for me.

Please do what you can to help Alvaro. Tell those who would further victimize the poor to go stuff themselves.

Or ask them how THEY would live on $300 a month.

See you all soon...

The Day of Action and Canada's Invisible People

I was so happy to see that the National Day of Action unfolded peacefully. I was so proud of our First Nations people. Because after everything we've done to them, it just shows again how great and beautiful they are.

I know some people were inconvenienced and that brought out the racist rats.

But as for me....I just wish MORE Canadians had been inconvenienced....or had joined in the Day of Action.

Not just because it would have reminded more people that a National Disgrace is EVERYONE'S problem.

Or because what's a day of inconvenience a year compared to 365 days of suffering.... bad water, hunger and teenage suicide?

But also because in a country as rich and fat as Canada raising a little shit is sometimes the only way the poorest and most oppressed and most desperate of Canadians can hope to get any ATTENTION.

Deseronto was just one of hundreds of events across the country. But it got ALL the TV airtime because they closed a highway and a railway track....so it was a BIG STORY ...so more Canadians noticed.

So at least for one day more Canadians couldn't shove the National Disgrace out of sight and out of mind.

So at least for one day the First Nations people weren't the Invisible People of Canada. Like these other poor and desperate Canadians...

They are everywhere in Canada. Every year there seem to be more of them. But we don't seem to see them anymore. Or don't seem to care...

Even though homelessness in Canada is now a chronic problem.

Canada's homeless population is somewhere between 200,000 and 300,000 people, while another 1.7 million residents struggle with "housing affordability issues," says an analysis of the latest research on shelter.

Bad for them. Bad for EVERYONE.

"The high cost of homelessness in Canada results from the role of homelessness as a proven multiplier of societal ills: malnutrition, unemployment, addiction, mental illness, family strife and lack of income security are all intensified when an individual or household becomes homeless..."

But because so many homeless Canadians are too poor and desperate or ill to fight back...because they have no political clout...because they don't raise shit.... Canadians can easily put THAT National Disgrace out of mind....if not out of sight...

Pretend they just don't see them...or if they do just shrug their shoulders and walk on. Or pretend it's somebody else's problem...as they hurry back to their comfortable homes...

The sad truth is that because not enough Canadians care enough about the problems faced by First Nations people and the homeless, to force our politicians to take immediate and emergency action, both human tragedies just keep getting worse and worse.

Even if so many of us can't seem to see them...or don't want to...

Until that changes NOTHING will change.

On the eve of Canada Day I still think this country is the most beautiful country on earth. But until those two national disgraces are history...until those ugly and shameful stains on the Maple Leaf are removed.

For me Canada won't be beautiful enough.

So if it takes more Days of Action to shake things up....

For me they can't come soon enough...
