Michael Ignatieff and the Coalition Trap

So Michael Ignatieff has finally decided to bury the Coalition he killed.

Even though Stephen Harper could have been made to look like a liar and a hypocrite.

Even though eight months ago polls showed the idea wasn't as unpopular as it has been portrayed.

A Nanos Research survey revealed that 49 per cent of Canadians would rather go to the polls, compared to 42 per cent who believe a Liberal/NDP coalition — backed by the Bloc Québécois — should be given a chance to govern in the event the minority government falls. Ten per cent of those surveyed were unsure.

And most of the opposition came from people out West who will NEVER vote for Ignatieff.

Even though Ignatieff could have turned this ridiculous Coalition phobia into a teachable moment.

With an election campaign not even underway yet, there was probably a teachable moment here......Instead, Ignatieff has just reinforced the view that there's something wrong with the idea of a coalition and that voters who reacted badly to something that was a shock when it happened and that was misrepresented by a lot of the voices who were shouting at them at the time, were right to do so.

But of course it's now too late for any of that, so what I thought I would do tonight is explain why the Liberal cremation of the Coalition may come back to BURN them.

To do that I have to explain what the Conservatives need to happen if they are going to win a majority.

(1) They need to drive as many votes in Quebec to the Bloc, so Ignatieff can't win any new seats. That's why they put out ads accusing Bloc leaders of being pedophiles. That's why they are going after the Coalition in a province where the idea is really popular. Because they knew that if they could get Iggy to bury that idea it could only make him LESS popular. Duh.

(2) They need to stir-up anti-Quebec feeling in English Canada by taking on the "separatists" which is just a code name for Quebecers. It worked for them last time when it provoked the greatest and vilest wave of anti-French bigotry I have ever seen. And they're hoping it will work again. Ignatieff could have confronted this dangerous bigotry...and earned massive brownie points in Quebec. But he chose not to.

(3) They need to alienate NDP supporters who might be tempted to vote for the Liberals just this time. Because with the Greens polling around ten percent the more they can drive up the NDP vote the greater the chance of a three-way split that can give the Cons even more seats.

That's of course when the Liberals aren't firming up the NDP vote themselves....

One.Two.Three. Mission accomplished. Congratulations Mr Ignatieff.

You know in my most gloomy moments I sometimes think that progressives in this country need to experience a Harper majority to give us the jolt of reality we need. So we finally understand what needs to be done to drive these alien RepubliCons from power. FOREVER.

It's going to be a hard lesson. There won't be much left our country by the time we finally understand why a fragmented opposition will always be at a disadvantage when faced with a united right.

But at least there'll be a small consolation.

Out of the ruins and the rubble of this diminished land should crawl something that looks like INTELLIGENCE. Because right now its gone missing. The Coalition is still a beautiful thing.

But Ignatieff is an IDIOT...

Harper, Ignatieff, and Who Really Killed the Coalition?

I see that Gilles Duceppe hasn't wasted any time calling it the Harper-Ignatieff Coalition.

Speaking to reporters in Ottawa after Ignatieff and Harper, a fuming Bloc Leader Gilles Duceppe suggested Ignatieff had followed in his Liberal predecessor's footsteps by propping up the Tories and entering into a "coalition" that would deliver "nothing for the unemployed.”

"He just choked,” Duceppe said of the Liberal leader. “He looked in the mirror this morning and saw Stéphane Dion.”

But I'm not going to get into the partisan slag fest. There's enough of it out there. All I want to do is to lament the grubby politics.

The decaying state of our political process, that puts cheap machinations before the needs of suffering Canadians.

And point out that if the real coalition was still around, none of this would be necessary. Because we would have been better than that.

Which is why I still want to know who really killed it.

Because something about this story really STINKS.

"They did it at the Canadian Council of (Chief) Executives, there was three presidents of major banks who stood up in the room – and this is not from cabinet so I can talk about it – stood up and said, `Ignatieff, don't you even think about bringing us to an election. We don't need this. We have no interest in this. And we will never fund your party again.'"

Not just because it says something about the Liberal Party...but also because it raises the curtain on how our political system really works.

The taped comments raise questions about what role the banks may have played in nixing the coalition, and also what power they wield over the severely financially strapped Liberal party.

Which is so disgusting and such a tragedy.

Because if the centre left wasn't divided it wouldn't be forced to grub around in the mud with the filthy Cons to try to make a sloppy deal. It would sweep the Cons from power and keep them out FOREVER.

Stephen Harper realizes that, and that's why he was still trying to demonize the Coalition today. Even though it's rotting in the grave, it's ghost still frightens him.

But somehow we don't get it. Don't understand that as long as the Bloc doesn't collapse and the great regional divide remains intact, and four parties of the left fight one party on the right, nothing will ever change. And the chances a centre-left party will ever form a majority government are very very slim. So we have to work with each other.

But still parse each other's policies like wingnuts parse the Bible. Or fight each other like the Communists and the Anarchists fought each other, as the fascists advanced on Madrid. While the Cons torch our country and its values.

Instead of trying to find common ground so that one day we can form a grand coalition, sweep the Cons into the garbage can of history, and make the kind of beautiful, progressive creative Canada most of us want.

Oh well. I know nobody listens to me. Slagging one another is so much more fun. And the more you slag the more popular you are in the blogosphere.

But I don't care because I know I'm right. One day the left WILL unite or be forced to recognize the need to form coalitions. But by then it will probably be in the ruins of what was once Canada. And it will be left to the new generation to ask why the fuck did it take so long ?

And why did you let the Cons destroy our future when you could have wiped them off the electoral map anytime you WANTED?

In the meantime, I'll settle for finding out who really killed the Coalition.

Because the answer is important for the future.

And I still REMEMBER...

Ignatieff and the Stupidity of it All

As I explained yesterday what bothers me the most about Michael Ignatieff's decision to support Stephen Harper's deeply flawed budget is its sickening moral failure.

His decision to abandon his so-called Liberal principles, and not even call for changes to the budget's most reactionary elements.

Ignatieff understands what's wrong with the budget. Yesterday, he detailed some of its main defects – its failure to address the fact that most jobless people don't qualify for employment insurance, its refusal to deal with child care, the strings attached to its infrastructure spending proposals, its gratuitous attack on the principle of paying men and women equally for work of equal value.

Then, having listed the budget's flaws, he said his party would support it anyway.

So millions of unemployed Canadians could be condemned to lives of poverty and misery.

Where the government needs to compromise most is in the area of employment insurance. All employees pay into this fund. But only 42 per cent of the jobless qualify for benefits. In bad times, this discrepancy promises disaster.

When he could have forced a compromise out of Harper's desperate Cons.

Had Ignatieff's Liberals cared enough, they almost certainly could have forced the government to back down here. But clearly they did not.

That's bad and unforgivable enough. But what also offends me is the stupidity of it all.

Last December, the proposed coalition promised to pump much-needed money into infrastructure projects, such as housing, roads and public transit. It also vowed to improve social benefits and provide help to troubled industries.

The program was so good that Harper stole many of the ideas and put them into Tuesday's budget.

By forming a coalition, Ignatieff would signal he is ready to govern.

By refusing, he ends up being outmanoeuvred politically by Harper, who in a year or two will claim credit for what will then be an improving Canadian economy.

So let's sum up this brilliant strategy that cost the Coalition its life.

If the budget is a total failure, and millions of Canadians are condemned to poverty and suffering, they will then turn to Ignatieff and his ConLibs to save them. Because he allowed this tainted budget to pass.

Hello? What? Really?

And if the budget somehow magically works, Stephen Harper gets all the credit, and gets to rule forever.

Wow that's BRILLIANT. Eh?

The Coalition really was the best and most Canadian solution to the enormous and frightening economic crisis our country faces.

I hate attacking Liberals...so many of them are my friends. Everybody knows that I believe in uniting the left into a common front so we can drive the foul Cons from power FOREVER.

I also suspect that Ignatieff will live to regret his moment of moral cowardice.... his moment of idiocy. And it will be his worst punishment.

But right now all I know is that he murdered my beautiful Coalition for NOTHING.

And I will never forgive him...

Ignatieff and the Coalition that Won't Die

Well I can't say I'm surprised. Just disgusted.

Michael Ignatieff had a chance to do the right thing, and stand up for the rights of poor Canadians, women, and children.

But instead he sold us all out. He'll blow Stephen Harper and "swallow hard" for the price of a meaningless amendment

Ignatieff is attempting to legislate something that's already there anyway by constitutional convention. All he's adding is a timetable, which, frankly, doesn't amount to much.

He didn't even have the guts or the decency to ask for changes to Employment Insurance, so many more Canadians could be eligible for benefits, instead of being driven into poverty and misery. Now there are two Conservative Parties in Canada: Harper's LibCons, and Ignatieff's ConLibs.

And for what? Does he really believe he can win an election against Harper all by himself? When the reason he's doing relatively well in the polls is mostly due to his popularity in Quebec.

But only because Quebecers saw him as a better Coalition leader than Stephane Dion. Now that he's stabbed the Coalition in the back, they'll call him a QUISLING and abandon him in droves.

And does he realize that by killing the Coalition that could have made him Prime Minister, he has only encouraged Stephen Harper to go gunning for an EARLY election? The one he craves to try to bankrupt the opposition parties. The one the Liberals can't afford.

Because now if he's defeated, Stephen Harper can tell the Governor General the Coalition is dead, and she'll have no choice but to grant him an election. Brilliant eh?

The Coalition for Change offered us all kinds of new possibilities. A chance to topple Stephen Harper's foul neocons before he damages our country even more and shames us further in the eyes of the world. A chance to unite the progressive left, and reclaim the Canada we've lost.

But instead Ignatieff opted to collaborate with Harper, by putting his Party before his country, and stabbing the dream in the back. So now it's No We Can't.

Instead of Yes We Can...

But he will not succeed. You can't kill something as strong and as beautiful as that. Sooner or later the progressive left will realize that we're living in different times, and that as long as we don't unite the Cons will rule FOREVER.

Sooner or later the Liberals will understand what they have done. Weaklings. Cowards. Quislings.

Sooner or later the Coalition will be back. Which is why I won't be removing the Coalition emblem from my sidebar.

Ever.

Because to me it will always stand for hope.

Ignatieff and his ConLibs may have betrayed it.

But the dream will never die...

Why the Coalition Should Topple the Cons

I guess this photo-op sums up how I feel about today's Budget. It was supposed to be an informal snapshot of the Harper Team working on the nation's business. Only a CBC reporter on their news channel came up with a detailed map showing where everyone should sit or stand.

So it was hardly surprising that the budget itself was nothing but a giant PR exercise.

It spews money in every direction to try to buy votes. It depends too much on shared funding from cash-strapped municipalities, its tax cuts are peanuts that will cost us dearly later on. It does almost nothing to encourage a greener economy. And it continues this foul Con government's war on Canadian women, with nothing for childcare spaces, and an assault on pay equity.

But its most catastrophic omission is that it it fails to adequately reform the Employment Insurance system and prepare it to cope with the enormous tide of human misery that could be coming its way. Because as I pointed out yesterday EI in Canada these days is completely inadequate.

Cuts in the early 1990s mean barely half of the country's unemployed today – and fewer than a quarter in Toronto – are eligible for benefits. Those lucky enough to qualify often get far less than poverty-level incomes. And for almost everyone scrambling to find work as the economy crumbles, benefits run out too soon.

And if more people don't become eligible, and benefits are increased, millions of Canadians could be forced into lives of grinding poverty, welfare rolls could swell, and our whole safety net could collapse.

Whatever Michael Ignatieff decides to include in his amendment tomorrow it must include a demand to reform the EI system. And if the Cons don't agree, then the opposition should topple them, and the Coalition should form a new and more Canadian government.

Because abandoning millions of Canada's most vulnerable citizens to the horror of what could be a brutal soul destroying economic apocalypse is simply unthinkable...if we are to continue to call ourselves Canadians.

The Coalition for Change has done some amazing things already in its short life.

It has changed the political dynamic in this country. It stopped Stephen Harper's attempt to destroy our political system. It made him grovel and beg for his job.....and violate everything he ever believed in.

It has made his fanatical neocon ideologues look like IDIOTS, forced them to pretend to be ConLiberals, and come up with money for such things as social housing...which they NEVER would have done otherwise.

Now it must do even more. At a time of national emergency, when so many Canadians face unimaginable misery, Canada must be Canada.....not a neocon jungle.

If the Cons don't do the right and decent thing. Defeat them. Crush them.

Finish them off....

Harper and the Hill the Cons will Die On

As I watched the teeny weeny Throne Speech today I couldn't help but be struck by how beaten Stephen Harper looked. The Governor General may have been sitting in the big chair. But Harper looked like he was sitting on another kind of throne.... shitting himself.

And who can blame him? Once not so long ago he was telling us the fundamentals were sound. Now they're collapsing. Once Great Economist ,Strong ,Clueless Leader told us the outlook was bright. Now it's sepulchral.

The Conservative government set a grim tone for the resumption of Parliament on Monday with a throne speech that used the word "crisis" four times in the first six paragraphs.

There were references to unprecedented uncertainty, worldwide recession, world wars and an allusion to the Great Depression of the 1930s.

But what must cause him even more pain than looking like a third rate fortune teller ....or an ignorant jackass...or looking as if he's straining to expel a turd the size of Jimbo Flaherty..... is having to look like a LIBERAL. Because he's so desperate to keep his job he'll do or say ANYTHING.

But of course there's only so far a fanatical ideologue like Stephen Harper can go, and this is the hill he will die on.

"We are not interested in making it lucrative to pay people not to work, it's not what this government is about, that's not what the taxpayers expect us to spend money on...not making Employment insurance more generous"

Stephen Harper December 19, 2008

With so many Canadians afraid of losing their jobs, and the present EI system so inadequate.

If Stephen Harper doesn't do enough to improve this wretched system that condemns so many Canadians to lives of degrading poverty, the Coalition for Change will have a perfect excuse to defeat the budget and take power. Why go to the wall over tax cuts, as bad as they are, when we can use the power of fear itself ? The fear so many Canadians have that they could be next.

Because Harper can't describe what we're facing as an economic apocalypse, and then do nothing to help its victims. Can he? Unless he's a crazy neocon who would put his jungle ideology before the lives of suffering Canadians. But he's a Liberal isn't he? Muahahahaha.

Wow isn't the Coalition awesome? First it turned Great Crazy Leader into a pathetic, grovelling, pretend Liberal. Now it can bring him down for not being a good enough one. Talk about poetic justice.

Golly. If I wasn't such a hopeless pessimist I might believe we've got the foul Cons exactly where we want them.

Defeat them. Crush them. Finish them off....

Why The Coalition Must Bring Down Harper

Is it my imagination or is Stephen Harper looking a little desperate these days? Like a pale little Con piggy on his way to the slaughterhouse of history. Oinking for his life.

But who can blame him eh?

First he torched our rainy day funds trying to buy himself a majority. Then he said the economy was sound and that he'd NEVER run a deficit. Then he predicted a healthy surplus. Then he recommended that Canadians buy stock...just before the markets tanked.

Then he tabled an economic update that was nothing more than a vicious attack on women, public service workers, and the other political parties. Then when confronted with the Coalition challenge he ran like a coward to the Governor General and whipped up hatred against Quebec to try to save his sorry ass.

Now five days before a budget Great Incompetent Leader is playing political games again.

Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff accused Prime Minister Stephen Harper of playing political games on Friday, calling the leaking of information from next week's federal budget a deliberate attempt "to get the bad news out of the way."

"I asked Mr. Harper not to play games like that. I told him, 'Put the facts and figures on the table. Don’t let them slip out at his convenience.' But the guy just can't help himself. He thinks it is all some kind of political game."

Which leads me to the obvious question: Why would ANYONE trust Stephen Harper again?

When everyone knows that he will just use a big deficit as an excuse to destroy the power of government...
which is all this last of the Bush Cons ever wanted to do.

I know some Liberals believe that now is not the time to bring down the government. That they should make Harper wear the recession, and diminish him even more before making their move.

But I think that would be a fatal mistake. It would destroy Ignatieff's support in Quebec, demoralize and split the centre-left, leave Iggy looking like a Con stooge, and leave the country in the icy grip of a bully ideologue who could say something like this during a time of recession:

"We are not interested in making it lucrative to pay people not to work, it's not what this government is about, that's not what the taxpayers expect us to spend money on...not making Employment insurance more generous"

Stephen Harper is the most evil and dangerous leader in Canadian history. To believe that he can be trusted or that he can really change would be the greatest act of idiocy or insanity this country has ever seen.

The Coalition is the best and most Canadian of instruments ever designed to rid us of this alien Bush Con government, and provide the kind of stability we need to fight the economic crisis. The best way to bury the separatist threat in Quebec by showing Quebecers that Canada works, when we all work TOGETHER.

The best way to show the world that we are Canadians not COWARDS, and we are determined to get our country back.

And the absolute best thing is that we don't need an election to do it. All we need to do is tell the Governor General that Harper has lost the confidence of the House. Period.

No matter what Harper and his foul Cons say or do next week.... defeat them.

Crush them.

Finish them off....

Harper and the Return of The Coalition

As I watched Obama's inauguration today I couldn't help but feel a bit envious. The Americans are so happy and full of hope. They have a new and cool President. While we are wallowing in the pit of despair because we got Stephen Harper.

The foul neocon bully nerd who doesn't know what he's doing, and has all the class of a guy who walks around in his underwear.

And then I saw this new poll and my spirits soared.

Polls conducted late last year showed a high level of opposition, especially outside Quebec, to a proposed Liberal-NDP coalition in the event the minority Harper government is defeated in the House. The new poll suggests Canadians' feelings have evolved, with 50 per cent of respondents favouring a coalition government, while 43 per cent are happier with the current Conservative government.

Imagine that eh? They buried it, nobody bothered to sell it. But the Coalition for Change came back anyway. Stronger than ever.

And what that means is that in less than two weeks Harper's Bush Cons could be toppled. And the coalition leaders can go to the Governor General and say that they are ready to form a new government.

And the only reason they have to offer to Canadians is that like them they just can't trust Great Naked Leader to do the right thing at a time of economic crisis.

Of the 1,000 respondents, 55 per cent disapproved of Mr. Harper's handling of his responsibilities, while 35 per cent offered their approval.

Which means that like the Americans we too have hope now. Hope that we can get rid of this foul sleazy regime that has raped our Canadian values, dragged our politics into the gutter, hurt women, children, poor people, torched the planet, and shamed our country in the eyes of the world.

And that we too can soon sing this freedom song, like the Great Pete Seeger and The Boss did the other day.

C'mon everyone we can do it. Let's stop worrying and wanking, show some passion for our country, and act ruthlessly to crush the Cons.

So we can sing it out loud. This land is my land, this land is OUR land.

The dirty Cons are rotting in the stinking garbage can of history.

And Canada is Canada again....

Michael Ignatieff and the Coalition

I see the clock has struck twelve in the Liberal castle, and Michael Ignatieff has made his move.

And I for one am delighted. Oh I know...I expect to be criticized by some of my best friends...including my companion. And as I've said before I wouldn't hang around Iggy's castle after midnight.

But my position is that one can hardly be squeamish at a time like this. If the Count has the sharpest fangs, and he's willing to stick them into Stephen Harper's neck, who am I to complain? All I care about is toppling Great Ugly Leader's government as soon as possible.

And if we're going to do that the Liberal Party needs a strong interim leader, and so does the Coalition. And the sooner the better.

Because if we don't have that leader in place by early rather than late January, the Coalition could lose its best chance to dethrone Stephen Harper at a time of national emergency. And Michael Ignatieff will lose his best chance of becoming Prime Minister...without an election his party can't afford.

By missing out on what could be an historic opportunity.

So here's what I think Michaelle Jean must have said last Thursday: Mr Harper, I will take your advice and prorogue Parliament. But if you lose a confidence vote in the House early next year, don't expect me to dissolve the House. You can't have an election until it is clear that a Government cannot be formed.

I also believe that with every bone in my body. I believe the Governor General is deeply distressed by the Con threats to go over the heads of Parliament and her own, and by the way they are threatening national unity. I believe she would LOVE to give the coalition a chance to govern. But for that to happen the coalition must demonstrate that it is a viable one, a real and stable alternative to the Con regime.

And to do that the leaders of the three parties must be able to get out there and sell that alternative, and reassure Canadians that the Coalition would be good for Canada. In a calm and professional manner, unlike the last frantic time.

To miss out on an historic opportunity like that one, at a time like this one, would be a crime against Canada. As well as a dangerous political mistake. Because if the opposition signs off on the budget, just like it did on the Throne Speech, the next time the opposition decides to bring down the government the Governor General will have no choice but to call an election.

And if the opposition is in no position to fight an election, because they don't have the money, Harper will play them like puppets while our country burns. And the Liberals will look as impotent as they did under Dion.

Michael Ignatieff may not like the idea of a coalition. And some Liberals may not like the idea of Michael Ignatieff.

But whether they put their party or their country first. They really have no choice.

Any way you add it up, and whether you like it or not, the Count was always going to be the leader of the Liberal Party.

Stephen Harper MUST be defeated if Canada is going to survive.

And the Coalition is still the only way to VICTORY.

-----------------------------------------------

P.S. Lordy. Some people actually voted for this post. Whew. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I thought I had pissed off EVERYBODY. But just remember my motives are pure. And if I have to hide this post from my companion...that's just a reasonable precaution because he's bigger than me.

But we're all in this together....right?

Stephen Harper and the Political Pazuzu

I've been tracking Stephen Harper's career for so long I sometimes feel like the old priest in The Exorcist.

I still remember the fatal day my political science professor suggested I might want to do a project on this new rising star in the West. Just like I remember the dark and stormy night when as I read through a pile of musty clippings in the library, a cold shiver went down my back.

Because it suddenly hit me like a bolt out of Hell that this was no redneck Messiah. This was Canada's political Pazuzu.

And if left unchecked or allowed to have too much power he could tear this country apart.

Since that time I've tried to warn people. I've written more posts about Harper than I can count. I pointed out that the writing was ALWAYS on the wall.

That there was something not quite right about a weird teenager who tried to destroy the Student Council in both high school AND university. Just like there is something definitely wrong with a leader who needs to destroy institutions and political opponents in order to feel good. Because he just can't help himself.

In a desperate attempt to get Canadians to pay attention I started calling him a MONSTER. But my friends just laughed. This is Canada not Transylvania. Don't exaggerate eh? Muahahaha.

Yeah right. And now it's almost too late.

The monster is running wild. Our Parliament is padlocked. Canadian democracy is lying on the floor in a pool of blood. English Canada is being barraged with radio ads whipping up hatred against Quebec. Because this wretched Con and his satanic spawn, know they can ride that hellish hound all the way to a majority.

Why do you think his numbers jumped so much in such a short time....everywhere except in Quebec? Huh? Which after stopping Stephen Harper from getting a majority now stands isolated and alone.

I must admit I'm stunned. But now at least there is some vindication.

"He just can't help himself.""The people around him, the stable, has generally been bred for obedience, so that's what you get," says a confrere.....Another insider agrees "there's no question the Prime Minister rules by fear..."

Sources say Harper was visibly shaken earlier in the week, angrily flouncing around his Langevin Block office, eyes reddened and battling a bad cold exacerbated by a lack of sleep."He is a yeller and certainly longshoremen could take language lessons from him. The backrooms are blue but it's not cigar smoke; it's four-letter words."

"He truly is ... politically brilliant, but he's also pathologically partisan. So he just can't help himself. It's a deadly combination....He cannot abide by the Liberals. He finds them indecisive, he finds them pandering, he wants to destroy them. He can't help himself – he just can't help himself."

He. Just. Can't. Help. Himself. Just like the Pazuzu can't. All he knows is pain and destruction and fear...and how much he LOVES it

Last week, a bureaucrat with close ties to the PMO, said Mr. Harper has told colleagues, “When I'm hiring someone, I want to see fear in their eyes.”.

Now remember that Stephen Harper is an avid student of Stalin. Which should have been a warning in itself.

Tom Hanson CP

And ask yourself who in their right minds would place an inhuman fanatic like that in charge of a country he seems determined to divide? At a time when a dark Depression is threatening to engulf us all? Can you imagine what he might do? Can you imagine what might happen? Can you imagine the HORROR?

If Canadians still can't see the danger, I give up. Ignorance is one thing, stupidity is another. You can't fight that.

Except to say once again, it's time to put dirty, cheap, absurd, goombah partisan politics aside, and support the Coalition for Change which is Canada's only hope, the only light in the darkness.

Defeat him at the first strategic opportunity. Crush him. Send this crazed political Pazuzu back to the hellish place in Alberta he came from.

Before he destroys our country.....
