As you may or may not know, the Irish Republic is marking the 100th anniversary of the so-called Easter Rising. The brutal battle in the heart of Dublin, which eventually led to the independence of that country. An estimated 485 people lost their lives in almost a week of fighting between the republican rebels and British armed forces in the city. More than half of those who died were civilians, including 40 children. And the theme is peace and reconciliation. So in that regard I don't think this action by our Canadian ambassador was particularly helpful.
A wonderful thing may be about to happen in Ireland in just a few days. Millions of people are preparing to take on the power of the Catholic Church, and some of the nastiest bigots you can imagine. And make that country the first in the world to vote to approve same-sex marriage.
In Ireland gays and lesbians are fighting for the right to get married. And the Catholic Church is attacking them as usual. The leader of Ireland's Catholics has criticised civil partnership legislation in the Republic of Ireland. Dr Brady said marriage between a man and a woman would always remain the ideal environment in which to raise children.

It's cute but also depressing. Because when you think about it that's what gay people have been doing for years. Asking others for their permission to love each other. Forced to beg for things that others take for granted. O boy. That little thing called love.

For years the Catholic Church in Ireland has held that country in an icy grip. Gay people have been treated like second class citizens. And women even worse. Ireland’s abortion laws are among the most restrictive in Europe – amongst the most restrictive of all developed nations. Under Irish law a woman can risk life imprisonment for pursuing an elective abortion within the State, unless the pregnancy risks the mother’s life, or she is suicidal as a result of it. So why am I not surprised by this horror? The five-volume study concluded that church officials encouraged ritual beatings and consistently shielded their orders' paedophiles from arrest amid a "culture of self-serving secrecy".
It also found that government inspectors failed to stop the chronic beatings, rapes and humiliation.
Just sickened. The poor little children. Punish every last one of these cruel bully monsters. And every government inspector who looked the other way. Don't let them get away with it. Make abortion legal TOMORROW. Keep these religious perverts away from kids....
