While Stephen Harper declares war on the Great Terrorist Menace, claiming only he can save our lives from those who would behead us in our beds. His foul Con regime continues to wage war on some of Canada's most vulnerable Canadians. Even if it could cost thousands of them their lives. For while this is good news.
I've written about Kevin before. The young heroin addict I found shooting up on the door step of the Yaletown apartment I was renting, while taking a summer course in Vancouver.
How I felt like I was looking at somebody dying before my eyes. How he made me laugh when he promised to give up heroin and start a new life in Hawaii or Australia. If I gave him ten bucks or a few cigarettes.
How I stared in horror at the scars and abcesses running the length of both arms. How glad I was to hear later about this great clinic.
And how I hoped they had managed to save his life, and heal his addiction.
So naturally I thought of Kevin today when I heard the wonderful news.
I was so proud of our Supreme Court and the kind of Canadian values I want to preserve so badly.
The kind of values Stephen Harper and his Cons are trying to destroy. By putting their foul vengeful ideology before the lives of Canadians.
Mr Clement continues to insist that the science isn't clearly in favour of Insite. At the CMA meeting, he said: "Harm reduction, in a sense, takes many forms. To me, prevention is harm reduction. Treatment is harm reduction. Enforcement is harm reduction."
And bowing down before the crazy words of Great Ugly Leader, and his insane War on Drugs.
"This descent into nihilism... leads to silliness such as moral neutrality on the use of marijuana or harder drugs mixed with its random moral crusades on tobacco. It explains the lack of moral censure on personal foibles of all kinds, extenuating even criminal behaviour with moral outrage at bourgeois society, which is then tangentially blamed for deviant behaviour."
Can you believe that fascist gibberish? Who can be surprised that now that he has a majority he's trying to turn us into a prison state? When the madness was always there.
Oh well. One victory at a time.
Today was a good day to be a Canadian eh?
Here's to the poor suffering junkies of the Downtown Eastside, and the human war on drugs like heroin. Here's to more clinics like Insite all over Canada.
The next time Stephen Harper claims to believe in our wonderfully human medicare system. And promises to keep funding it. Really. Cross my heart.
Somebody should ask him why the Cons are spending an absolute fortune going all the way to the Supreme Court to try to close down Vancouver's Insite clinic.
The study, published Monday, found overdose fatalities have dropped 35 per cent, a number The Lancet calls "impressive."
"Overdose death is such a tragic and horrific outcome, the fact that it's able to reduce overdose deaths, from a public health perspective, we're just thrilled," said Dr. Evan Wood, co-author of the study.
As well as keeping addicts from getting sick, and allowing case workers a chance to try to convince drug users to seek treatment.
And then somebody can ask Harper, or his shameless stooge Tony Clement, whether this is yet another example of the Cons putting their foul Republican ideology before the lives of Canadians?
Don't they know when ideology is MURDER?
Do they really expect us to believe that they won't put that same crazed Con ideology before the future of our medicare system?

Gawd. You know I once wrote a post about a young heroin addict named Kevin who I met when I was taking a course in Vancouver. Shooting up on the doorstep of the Yaletown apartment I was renting.
I wrote about how horrified I was to see the scars and abcesses on both his arms. And how helpless I felt because all I could do was tell him to seek medical help immediately. But I never saw him again so I don't know whether he did, or whether he is even still alive.
And how sorry I was later not to have known about that wonderful Insite clinic.
Because if I had I would have dragged him there by the scruff of his neck if I had to. Because I can't see somebody dying in front of my eyes and not do ANYTHING.

So when I came across this video in my archives tonight, I thought of him again...
Except now I think if the Cons ever get a majority maybe I'll swim there too.
Because I can't live in a country with their kind of killer values.
So do me a favour eh? If you want me to stay, as well as saving OUR Canada.
I used to think that Tony Clement looked out of place in this family photo of the Boys in the PMO. I thought he was just a goofy gopher and Boss Harper fart catcher who does what he's told. But after reading this story I've changed my mind. Last fall, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the British Columbia Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS, after months of intense, private talks, agreed to face the media together to declare their agreement that research shows the “benefits” and “positive impacts” of supervised injection sites for intravenous drug users. The proposed joint media release was never issued. Nor did the RCMP officers and the centre’s doctors appear together for their planned news conference. According to Montaner, two days before the scheduled event last December—after a venue had been booked at the University of British Columbia and “the banners were ready”—he received a telephone call from Deputy Commissioner Gary Bass, the most senior RCMP officer in British Columbia. “He said, ‘Julio, can’t do it,’ ” Montaner recalls. “I said, ‘What do you mean, Gary?’ He said, ‘I’m really sorry, I’ve been ordered not to go ahead with the news conference.’ ” Montaner says Bass made it clear that the order came from RCMP headquarters in Ottawa. Now I think Clement and his foul Cons should be ARRESTED for putting their evil ideology before the lives of Canadians. Because let's be clear. Tony Clement may call it an "abomination." But Insite is a smart and wonderfully human idea. It's supported by the people of British Columbia. It does help some of our poorest and most desperate citizens.
It does save lives. And any government that is willing to hurt or kill its own people to please its ignorant, rabid base, is an absolute ABOMINATION. And must be removed from office as soon as possible. Oh boy. I know I'm always asking the same questions eh? But why are the Cons always trying to turn the RCMP into their own private security force?When is ideology murder? And when is enough ENOUGH?
I got home from work today, put on the TV, and there was Harper's monkey Dimitri Soudas accusing the wonderfully human Libby Davies of endangering human lives.
“Veterans, seniors and young children are currently being prevented from exiting or entering the Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Vancouver because the Libby Davies “welcoming committee” has taped all exits shut..." "The situation has created a security risk for all the people currently in the building. Some doors have been chained or taped shut while people were preparing for a Chinese New Year rehearsal.”
When Libby had nothing to do with the demonstration. Nobody was in danger. And the only people threatening the lives of Canadians are the foul Con ideologues, who would turn Canada into Amerika.
By shutting down the Insite facility, just to create a wedge issue, in a province where their polls are tanking. Just to appease their rabid wingnut base. Even though it could cost the lives of thousands of Canada's poorest and most vulnerable citizens.
Even though their brutish RepubliCon ideology is nothing less than murder. Oh boy. What more can I say or do? Except add to my list of things we must do to save Canada. First we organize, unite, and defeat these Con bastards.
Then we charge them with crimes against humanity. Then we pack them off to PRISON...
