When I saw the pictures of what the fire they called The Beast had done to Fort McMurray, at first I was shocked by the devastation.
Stunned at the sight of so many houses and hopes and memories reduced to ashes by its raging fury.
But then I was amazed to see how much of Fort Mac had been saved, almost ninety percent.
It may be small consolation to the thousands of people who have lost their homes, or their businesses, or have been forced to flee the Fort McMurray inferno.
But I have been incredibly moved by the way Canadians all over this fractious country have come together to help them.
And there couldn't be a better symbol of that unity of purpose, than what happened in the House of Commons yesterday.
It's like a scene out of hell, a raging inferno if ever there was one.
And I feel so sorry for the residents of Fort Mac who have lost their homes or their businesses.
But what I find really moving is the way many Canadians all over the country have been doing what they can to help those poor people through this terrible time.
So we really don't need this ugly reaction.
