He can try to hide behind big legal words. He can claim he didn't know. But nobody can deny that this is a brutal assault on gay people.
The Harper government is being accused of taking away same-sex rights by “stealth” in light of a surprise government stand that non-resident gay and lesbian couples who flocked to Canada to exchange vows really aren’t legally married after all.
He can claim he isn't reopening the gay marriage debate, when this stealth offensive, like the one on abortion, was carefully crafted by the religious fanatics that run the PMO. And he is reopening the debate, by sticking a knife into the side of gay equality.
For most Canadians, same-sex marriage is a settled issue and part of the landscape. Despite some people’s fears, Stephen Harper’s government hasn’t used its majority to reopen the marriage debate in Parliament. But in two recent cases, government lawyers are taking a position that is inconsistent with gay men’s and lesbians’ hard-fought equality.
And not just here but also in Britain.

Forcing a member of his staff to resign, to cover up his own responsibility for a grotesque fund raising racket. And blowing the cover on Great Ugly Leader's plans for a spring blitzkrieg election.
The attached campaign outline appears to lay bare Conservative plans for a spring election, referring to a $378,000 “pre-writ” ethnic media buy beginning March 15 and lasting for two weeks.
The one Great Big Liar says he doesn't want.
But this is absolutely chilling.
The unprecedented glimpse into the internal strategy of the famously secretive Conservative election machine reveals plans for saturation television advertising in Toronto and Vancouver that asks immigrant Canadians: “Isn’t it time we all voted our values?”
Because let there be no doubt about it. This is a plan to pit immigrants against women and gay Canadians. Force the social conservative values of their rabid base down their throats, and exterminate their rights.
And if this evil plan is allowed to succeed it will tear this country apart, and turn it into a battleground. For women and gay people will NOT go quietly.
Stephen Harper's greatest crime against Canada has been to introduce U.S.-style wedge politics into our country, along with his foul attack ads. Just so he can claw out a majority, and change Canada beyond recognition.
By pitting Canadians against Canadians he has already divided our country, and done great damage to its fragile social fabric. But this is the absolute limit. The Final Warning.
