One of the things I despise the most about Stephen Harper is that he would turn this big, beautiful country, into something as small and as grubby as he is. Turn a still young country like Canada into an old and tired one, where greed rules and change is viewed as threatening. Or as Carol Goar writes, viewed as impossible to achieve.
As you know, I try to stay away from criticizing Canada's progressive parties, because I believe in a united left, and don't think it's a good idea to burn bridges we will some day have to cross. But the reaction to the NDP's convention is so absurd ...such a circus...I feel I must. First came the dumb media reducing everything to an idiot headline. As if there weren't more important things to discuss. Like how to win more seats in the next election. And most idiot of all....completely ignoring the fact that if you translate the words Democratic Party into French, and then use the initials it sounds like Pe- De. The slang word for FAGGOT. Which would make the party the laughing stock of the province. Why do you think Mario Dumont called his party the ACTION Democratique instead of the Parti Democratique? Duh.
Then came the country's disgusting right-wing media The more than 1,000 delegates endorsed action to prevent violence against aboriginal women. They endorsed enshrining childcare into law. They endorsed investment in environmentally friendly jobs. They endorsed ending rules that prevent homosexuals from donating organs.
In the end, there were more than 50 policies approved. But there was little to raise the eyebrows of the party's socialist founders. As if the word SOCIALIST... as in social democracy.... was something to be ashamed about. Instead of the trademark of some of the world's most advanced democracies. As if the issues discussed weren't important. Then came the Liberal bloggers. Who sounded like members of the Con choir. Even though if Ignatieff does manage to win an election, because the Bloc isn't going ANYWHERE he can only hope for a minority. And will have to depend on the NDP to stay in power.
Oh boy. It's all such a ridiculous and tragic FARCE. The centre-left eats itself while the dirty Cons kill Canada. And while I'm at it .....I'm still waiting to hear why, according to the latest EKOS poll, 41 per cent of Liberals believe the country is heading in the RIGHT direction. And why one out of three of them would choose the Cons as their second choice? Because let's face it, with those kind of scary numbers, if the NDP didn't exist we would have to invent it. You see that's the irony eh? The NDP doesn't need to change its name because EVERYBODY knows who they are. But who I wonder are the Liberals? And isn't it about time THEY changed their name to the LCP? The Liberal Conservative Party. People please. Trust me I love you ALL. But we must understand that thanks to the Bloc, the home team of the semi autonomous nation of Quebec, the political landscape of Canada has changed FOREVER. And the only way the tyranny of the Con minority will be defeated, is if the left unites or forms a coalition like they do in other civilized countries.
The Coalition for Change was an idea ahead of its time in a country stuck in a rut and going NOWHERE.But sooner or later everyone will recognize the obvious.
And it will be back...
My advice? Love it now or love it later. But while we wait for it to return don't do the Con's dirty work for them.

Yikes. It's such a scary image I'm going to have to keep a nightlight burning by my bed. Andrew Coyne's suggestion for a coalition between Harper and Ignatieff.
Well now, it’s been a week since Ignatieff’s—what should we call it? Appointment? Installation? Inevitability?—and what message has he been sending ever since? That he will do everything in his power to ensure the budget is not defeated, the government does not fall, and above all that there is no election. Moreover, the tripartite coalition that was supposed to be the alternative is clearly dormant, if not expired. Ignatieff hardly bothers even to mention it anymore. He can read the polls, showing upwards of 60 per cent of the public hostile to the coalition taking power—assuming the Governor General were even disposed to call upon it, of which there is some doubt. Now I'm not going to waste any ammunition shooting holes in Coyne's arguments. He does that himself. Especially since he's been trying to kill the coalition baby from the moment it was born. Any more Con than that and you get to work for the PMO...instead of pretending you're a journalist.
But I will point out that at least he recognizes something that a lot of Liberals don't seem to understand. Stephen Harper wants an election as SOON as he can. Oh sure he will do what he has to do to win himself a budget vote of confidence, to make sure the Governor General won't ask the Coalition to form a government. But as soon as that is over he knows that if his government is defeated again...in two weeks or two months... the GG will have no choice but to allow him to call an election. So he can jump on the back of the Liberal Party and suck out its juices and bankrupt it .....before Ignatieff is even confirmed. And you can be sure that he will find some way to bring down his own government and trigger that election. Because Stephen Harper hates the Liberal Party even MORE than he hates Canada. Whether they like it or not, the Coalition is the ONLY way the Liberals can avoid an election, before they can rebuild their party. But Liberals being Liberals they may think they can play footsy with Harper and achieve the same result. But they'll only end up in his web. Because when Harper sees something as weak and as vulnerable as the Liberal Party, the bully in him wants to KILL it dead. And he knows that he could be just one election away from doing that. But only if he strikes while the Cons are rich and the Liberals are poor. i.e. SOONER rather than later. Hey c'mon. Everyone wake up and smell the coffee eh? This isn't Disneyland or Iggyland, this is Stephen Harper's Krazy Kanada. Build up the Coalition, don't keep it on the shelf, or let it wither on the vine. The only reason these Cons hate it so much is because they fear it more than ANYTHING. That's why they attack it like rabid dogs....or mock it....or try to laugh it off. For the sake of the Liberal Party. For the sake of Ignatieff's future. For the sake of us ALL. Beware the kiss of the spideyman...

To a degree seldom seen in Ottawa, his department has been stripped of influence. As opposed to being minister, Jim Flaherty administers. He passes along the PM's policies and directives. He's the yes guy. It's aye, aye, Prime Minister. "And what else would you care for? Coffee, doughnuts, pistachios?"
Was it the magic moment when the centre-left finally united to say YES WE CAN ? Or just a ghostly mirage frozen in a time of hope? Is the Coalition for Change the weapon that will bludgeon Stephen Harper out of power? Or is it, as Steve V from Far and Wide seems to think, a monstrous mutant creature whose deadly embrace is threatening to drag us a ALL...especially the New/Nouveau Liberal Party.... into The Abyss? *Shudder*
I think it's important to separate personal want from rational thought. If confronted with clear evidence that rejects a concept, it is far more astute to incorporate that knowledge and react accordingly, rather than to pretend it doesn't exist or put one's faith in the unlikely possibility of seismic change.
In other words run for your lives !!!!!!! Now I have a lot of respect for Steve. No blogger on our side spends more time poring over polls, like the ancient soothsayers used to rummage through goat guts. But I'm afraid to say that this time he's dead wrong.
The brutal political reality is that Coalition for Change is not only the best and the quickest way to end Stephen Harper's foul Con regime, whose ideological straitjacket and dirty political games are leading us to disaster in a time of crisis. It's the ONLY way to do that without an election, that the progressive parties can't afford, and neither can the country. Firstly forget about polls like this one. That frame their questions this way: "....because of the severe economic situation the country faces and the fact the Liberals and NDP have entered into an 'unholy' deal with the Bloc separatists." They just play to the barrage of misleading Con radio ads that panicked some Canadians into believing the Evil Separatists were staging a coup d'etat. Or that it was a recipe for the break up of Canada.
The Coalition wasn't able to counter that Con propaganda then, now it can. The three leaders can face the cameras together, explain the role of the Bloc, and tell Canadians in a calm reasoned manner why they alone can offer the kind of stable government the country need in a time of crisis.
And besides times change, recessions deepen. Harper will present his budget a week after Obama becomes President. The celebration of change will be in the air. If Ignatieff's polls can rise. So can the Coalitions. If all three leaders get out there and sell the Coalition effectively...... instead of running away from it.
Secondly, and most importantly, if the government should fall over the budget, it is almost certain that the Governor General will offer the Coalition a chance to form a government. And for her polls don't count. And neither does what's in the budget.
Her only duty is to determine whether the government enjoys the confidence of the house, and then decide whether to allow an election...or call on another political formation that can form a STABLE government. Since Parliament has only sat for TWO weeks, and an election so soon would only mean more instability in a time of crisis, and only the Coalition can offer the stability of a government that cannot be defeated from one day to another like the Cons can, her choice will be obvious.
The whole point of the fall election, we were told, was to give Harper some “open water” to govern without having to worry the opposition would do anything nasty, such as opposing him. The whole point. Certainty vs. chaos. Steady hand vs. the deluge. The voters granted him, for the second time, the awesome gift of power; he used it to steer a straight line away from open water into chaos and deluge, like some mad Ahab of parliamentary mischief.
Harper knows that he stands to lose everything. She told him. That's why he is trying to drive a wedge into the Coalition by luring Ignatieff into holding separate talks. So he can divide and conquer. Or argue that no serious alternative exists because one leader says one thing and another says another. That's why he is trying to inflame sentiments in the West with his absurd Senate proposal so he can claim that removing him from office would trigger a national unity crisis.
If the Governor General stands up to him, as I believe she signalled she will, Harper's arguments will fall on deaf ears. But for that to happen the Coalition must stay united and be prepared to govern, because it will only get ONE chance. If the Harper government's budget is approved, the Governor General will recognize that it has the confidence of the House. And next time the government is defeated she will have no choice but to allow Harper to call an election. And he could call one ANYTIME he wants. i.e. sooner rather than later. Because let's never forget that for Great Ahab Leader the Liberal Party is his great white whale.
And if the opposition parties don't have the money to properly contest that election, the only alternative would be to let Harper govern like he had a majority. Again. And look more and more impotent. Again. Just like Dion did. Is THAT what we want? And even in the worst case scenario, and the Governor General allowed Harper to call an election the first time, a strong Coalition would facilitate a strategic voting plan that could defeat the Cons in riding after riding. And help save money by not having to run candidates in some ridings, and backing a sure winner. Oh I know that there are some Liberals that dream of the good old days. And believe that the arrival of Michael Ignatieff will change everything and that they can do it all by themselves. But in an increasingly balkanized country, with a fragmented left, and a Bloc and an NDP who stand to gain from the betrayal of the Coalition, how realistic is that? We would probably end up with the same kind of Parliament we have now. And then what? And where would Ignatieff be? When if he became Prime Minister of a Coalition government, he would have a chance to show his stuff, reap the political benefits, and choose when to call an election, AFTER his party has rebuilt itself. Never mind the hope that a coalition would bring to a country that needs it so badly. For all the above rational reasons. The Coalition still is the best and quickest way of getting rid of Stephen Harper's crazy and dangerous ideological government that is leading us all to disaster. We need to seize the moment, present a united front, and act rationally and ruthlessly to drive these wretched Cons from power. And whether we believe it's just a bargaining chip, or the path to a better future. At this critical time in Canadian history, everyone needs to be out there selling the Coalition. Instead of running away from it...
Well I see that Count Iggy went to see Great Werewolf Leader today. And had a businesslike and "cordial" conversation over a couple of cups of blood coffee.
Gosh that must have been SCARY. I only hope Ignatieff realized that every word of his was being taped. To be used against him later. And that while he was there he didn't use the crapper. If he doesn't want to see his asshole smiling at him....or making puffin sounds... on YouTube. Because Stephen Harper's PMO is capable of ANYTHING.
And when you dine with a man whose insane driving obsession is to bankrupt the Liberal Party and DESTROY it, you really have to watch your backside. He may be playing Destroying the Coalition today. But tomorrow he'll be back playing his favourite game..... Liberal Party Exterminator. So I'm just glad that Iggy got away alive, because with a moon as BIG as this one. Lord knows what might have happened. Would the werewolf have pretended to kiss the Count, and then bitten off his tongue? Or would the Count have pretended he was going to ...um....you know... The Great White North can be so dark and depressing at this time of the year. Sometimes I just feel like jumping on a plane and never coming back. Especially when I read a poll like this one.
Almost two-thirds of Canadians say they want Michael Ignatieff, the new head of the federal Liberal party, to seek a compromise with Prime Minister Stephen Harper to keep the Conservatives in power instead of joining the New Democratic Party and Bloc Quebecois early in the new year to defeat the minority government.
And there is enough bad news for EVERYONE.
The survey results said the Liberals have not improved their electoral prospects - so far - by picking Ignatieff earlier this week to replace the unpopular Stephane Dion. Those surveyed favoured the Conservatives over the Liberals by 45 per cent to 26 per cent when no leaders' names were mentioned. The 19-point gap was repeated when the question was rephrased to name Ignatieff.
And all I can say is aren't we lucky we have Quebec?
The only place the coalition had majority support was in Quebec, were 62 per cent gave the idea a thumbs-up. Opposition was strongest in Alberta where 80 per cent were opposed.
And WTF is happening to the rest of the country? Does it really hate Quebec....or Gilles Duceppe... THAT much? Of course I'm not giving up. As I said yesterday I believe that the only reason the Coalition has done badly in the polls is because it hasn't been sold properly. And because it's just a baby.
With no money, no newsers, no photo-ops, no videos, no songs. Just a whole lot of HOPE for a new and better Canada.
But if we want to change all that we'd better start soon. Canadians can't support something when they don't know what it looks like. Or what it has to offer. And the baby is DYING.
I still think if English Canadians can be shown how beautiful it is, and how it can provide the stable government we need at a time of crisis, they would choose it over the evil Con government of Stephen Harper. The tyrant who has raped our country, and shutdown our Parliament.
But for the first time a small sliver of doubt has crept into my soul. Maybe Canadians aren't the fighters I thought they were. Fear can do terrible things to people. Maybe the Great White North isn't the place I thought it was...

Well you've got to hand it to the Coalition for Change. Never has a political formation been buried by so many people in such a short time. Before it's even dead.
The Conservatives, and their right-wing stooges in the media tried to embalm it alive.And now some Liberals seem to want to put it on ice. Because they claim it doesn't work.
As it stands right now, Canadians hate the idea of a coalition. Canadians are so weary of it, they move to support Harper, despite blaming him for the crisis. I’ve seen a lot of polls, rarely have I seen a batch so decisive in their rejection, and this fact is the bottom line consideration. A coalition simply won’t fly, unless there is public support, if the perceptions are negative, the idea is DOA.
Now I agree the polls were disappointing, except in Quebec, but isn't it time somebody tried to figure out the reasons for that, rather than throwing the baby out with the bath water?
Because here's what I think:
(1) Between the time it was born and the time Parliament shutdown the Coalition had about a week to make its case to Canadians, and that's not enough time to reassure people spooked by an economic crisis.
(2) Canadians didn't like the idea of Stephane Dion steering the Canadian ship into the eye of the storm, and the hideous video the Liberal Party produced made the whole project look amateurish.
(3) The Conservatives unleashed a barrage of radio ads, challenging the right of the Bloc Quebecois to be even a minor partner in a coalition, made it sound like the evil separatists were staging a coup. They ignited a fire storm of anti-Quebec feeling in English Canada. And the Coalition didn't have the money, or the time, to counter that foul propaganda effectively. Number one and number two are no longer a problem. Dion is gone, the Coalition has enough time to sell its plan, and calm the fears of the population. And an endorsement by the Governor General would be an enormous boost to its legitimacy.
Which leaves us with number three, Stephen Harper's outrageous claim that allowing the Bloc to support a coalition would endanger our country. When in fact it's exactly the opposite.
Because for starters, the Bloc Quebecois can do absolutely nothing to get Quebec out of Canada, while sitting in the Canadian Parliament. That can only be done by the members of the National Assembly, with the consent of the Quebec people.
Two...Quebecers know that, so most don't even think of the Bloc as sovereignists.
The Bloc presents itself as the defender of "Quebec's interests" rather than as the champion of sovereignty, and so Quebeckers see it as a regular party that makes them feel secure, a comfort zone in the alien environment of federal politics. It's their "home team..."
Three the Bloc is a social democratic party that stopped Stephen Harper from getting a majority, to protect the Canadian values we share. And everybody knows that Gilles Duceppe is a decent man. Not a scary separatist.
And lastly but most importantly, who gave anyone the right to declare that the representatives of the Quebec people are not equal members of our Canadian Parliament? Or deny federalists the chance to show Quebecers that Canada works when everybody works together.
It's a difficult question because unfortunately anti-Quebec feeling is widespread. But if the Coalition leaders don't have courage to stand up against this hateful nonsense, Harper will always have them where he wants them. The Coalition really will be DOA. And Canada could be torn apart.
My conclusion? The Coalition is not just the best way to govern this country in a time of economic crisis, and the only reason Stephen Harper is cornered and desperate. It's a great way to keep Canada together. And the only way to go.
So I can only urge those who would bury the Coalition baby before it's had a chance to grow, to cool their jets, and stop panicking. And undermining our best chance of bringing down the tyrant we all hate.
I watched Michael Ignatieff's news conference today, and I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised.
"I told caucus I will vote non-confidence in this government. I am prepared to enter into a coalition government if that is what the Governor General asks me to do." He said all the right things, avoided all the traps set for him by our revolting right-wing media. He did not allow them to drive a wedge into the coalition. And best of all he said he has no intention of negotiating with Great Ugly Leader.
Which is a very good thing because that would be FATAL....
If Iggy goes anywhere near that spidey hole known as the PMO, he'll be stung so many times he'll never recover. The Liberal Party will be seen as Harper's puppet. And the Coalition will be dead on arrival. As for keeping his options open: "I also made it clear to the caucus, no party can have the confidence of the country if it decides to vote against a budget it hasn't even read." I don't have any problem with that. In fact I wish the other Coalition leaders would adopt the same position. It's just smart politics. You project a reasonable and responsible image because that's the Coalition and the Canadian way. You say nobody can really trust Harper but you're willing to give him one last chance. But when the big day arrives, you declare WHATEVER Harper says or does to be inadequate. You accuse him of using the economic stimulus as an excuse to destroy the power of government and national institutions like the CBC. You tell Canadians you just can't trust him anymore. And you bring him down with a sickening thud. It's Stephen Harper's worst nightmare. The bully getting a taste of his own medicine. You can see the fear in his eyes....
He still can't admit he did anything wrong. He still can't bring himself to accept the idea of a government stimulus. He still thinks he can slash himself out of a deficit. But he's so scared and desperate he's quaking like a JELLO. Because he knows that the Governor General will offer the Coalition a chance to govern if his government is toppled. And he knows his only hope is to drive a wedge into it, so she cannot exercise that option.
Just like we know that if we stay UNITED we'll have him where we want him...standing on the trapdoor of history. Here's to the Coalition for Change and its new Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff. Watch out for the spidey hole eh? Down with the tyrant...
Oh boy. Or should I say woof woof. I'm in the dog house for writing this post. Just about ALL my friends are mad at me for forgetting to point out that Iggy is not just a right-wing vampire Liberal. He's also a big beaked chickenhawk. And of course they're right. I don't like him either. And after reading Michael Valpy's opus in the Globe today I like him even less. Especially after reading how he treated his younger brother ... the bullied fat kid the other kids called "piggy." We went for a walk, and he said, 'I want to make one thing absolutely clear to you. When we're at Aunt Helen's house or Aunt Charity's house [Charity Grant, their mother's sister], you can say whatever you want to me. But if you ever see me on the school grounds, you're not to talk to me. You're not to recognize that I'm your brother. You don't exist as far as I'm concerned. Do I make myself clear?'"
Anyone who could turn his back on his baby brother isn't the kind of guy I could ever admire.Especially a guy who muses about torture.... or thinks he's Bismark.
To bring the new into being, a politician needs a sense of timing, of when to leap and when to remain still. Bismarck famously remarked that political judgment was the ability to hear, before anyone else, the distant hoofbeats of the horse of history. Mein Gott. Watch out for the hooves....and the horse shit. But then I'm not a Liberal. All I care about is the Coalition for Change. And the fact is that unless the Liberal Party gets a leader quickly, they're screwed and so are we. Because we need to project a united front ,and get out there and convince Canadians that the coalition is a viable option. And will be ready to take power as soon as the Governor General gives it the green light. As I'm sure she will.
If Ignatieff can help do that, and make the Coalition more attractive to more people, including people who think it's too left-wing, then I'm willing to forgive him just about EVERYTHING. Because all I care about is the future, and bringing down Stephen Harper's foul quasi-fascist government.
So I'm going to hold my fire, and wait to see what Ignatieff does. I wish him well. I hope he surprises me. But if he turns his back on that chance, distances himself from the coalition, puts his party before his country. Thinks that a fragmented opposition can beat the Cons better than a coalition can, because he was born to be Prime Minister.....or Canada's Bismark. And forgets that whatever Stephen Harper offers in a budget.....A pepperoni pizza and big screen TV for EVERYONE..... it's what Harper is going to CUT that counts. And then he sells us out by propping up that chainsaw maniac...
Then Michael Ignatieff will be solely responsible for leaving Canadians in the hands of a neocon monster who is capable of using an economic crisis as an excuse to destroy this country. And all I can say is Canadians will never forgive him. The Liberals will be left looking like a steaming pile of horse shit. And I'll REALLY be in the doghouse....

But even from two blocks away I could hear the samba drums, the music, the cheers, and the sounds of freedom. And when I finally arrived it was a beautiful sight. Despite the bitter cold the square was packed with thousands of Coalition supporters.
If our cowardly tyrant Stephen "Chicken" Harper had heard them he would have quaked in his jackboots. There were so many people I wasn't able to get anywhere near the stage. But I did manage to get this shot of Stephane Dion addressing the crowd.
And when he talked about how Great Cowardly Tyrant had "run away from Parliament" I cheered wildly, made chicken sounds, and shouted "Merci !!!" Because Dion may not be the best political leader in the world, but he's a better and more decent Canadian than the creepy fascist Harper could ever hope to be. And it wasn't all whooping it up. We talked about and held a minute of silence for the murdered women of the Montreal Massacre on this Day of Remembrance.And all the other victims of male insanity. Before going back to the job of building a better world free from sexism, racism, homophobia, and violence.
And this sister said it all: Give us back our Parliament. Let the tyrant fall !!!
And then when our rally was over I hoofed it up the street to where the Con rally was taking place on the steps of Queen's Park. And what a difference. It was like night and day.
If there were more than two hundred people there I would be very surprised. There was no music,no spirit, it was a grim little gathering. Our rally was so big and beautiful. Their rally was so small and UGLY.
So redneck. So pathetic. Or just.....um.....WEIRD.
And not just this Mr Con Canada... Some freaky guy, who looked like he had just escaped from an insane asylum, came up to me and told me he was flying the Canadian flag upside down because it was an international symbol of distress. And did I know that? Huh? Huh?
And I said "Hey bud, don't worry about it. Soon you'll be flying the white flag and even dum rednecks know what THAT means. Eh?"
And then some Coalition supporters showed up and started heckling the Cons...
And it was EXCELLENT.
Although of course the police had to keep a close eye on things, because these Krazy Cons are capable of ANYTHING.
But then so are we when it comes to defending our country from these fascist goons. Except that we're not just better than them..... we're MORE than them.
And we whupped them today. Just like we're going to build up the Coalition for Change, and whup their dirty Con asses out of power.
Because there's nothing we can't do if we stay UNITED.
So I just want to thank all the coalition supporters who turned out today to send Great Chicken Tyrant a message: Your days in power are NUMBERED. And encourage others to do the same all across Canada. Just do it. It's worth it. Because today I heard the sounds of freedom.
I see that Great Cornered Leader is now so desperate he's morphed into Canada's Sarah Palin. She accused Obama of being a terrorist, and whipped up hatred against him. Harper is accusing Stephane Dion of being in bed with separatists.
"The balance of power would be in the hands of the separatist Bloc," says a Conservative radio ad that began airing yesterday. "(Bloc Leader) Gilles Duceppe will be calling the tune each and every day," warned Transport Minister John Baird in a radio interview yesterday. "The Government of Canada would be at the mercy of people committed to destroying our Confederation," alleged "Rally for Canada," a pro-Conservative website.
Even though Dion is one of the country's best known separatist fighters and Harper has been blowing the real separatists for years. Even though everyone knows that Gilles Duceppe is a decent person, and most of his supporters aren't separatists. And they voted in the last election to stop Great Ugly Leader from getting a majority and destroying our common Canadian values.
Even though the Bloc has a minor role in the Coalition for Change. The Bloc has agreed to support the coalition on budget measures and other non-confidence votes because it favours the coalition's economic policies over the laissez-faire approach of the Conservatives. Duceppe made it clear on Monday that there is no quid pro quo for his party on its sovereignist agenda. That is why he is reserving the right to withdraw support from the coalition after 18 months. But that hasn't stopped the disgusting RepubliCons from declaring that Duceppe is the real leader of the Coalition. And inciting their rabid supporters to whip up hatred against Quebec.
Now I don't know what to say about stuff like that...except that it's disgusting. But I do know this.... in the United States decent Americans sent the foul Sarah Palin back to the redneck hell she came from.
And if decent Canadians don't do the same to Sarah Harper and his Palinist Cons who are lighting the dead fires of separatism....in Quebec and the West... to try to save themselves.
This country could be torn apart.
