Donald Trump and the Growing Republican Revolt

Well there was Donald Trump in Arizona yesterday, whipping up the racist rabble who want him to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.

While his supporters kicked and punched a protester.

Another Donald Trump event erupted in violence in Tucson, Arizona on Saturday night: a rally attendee was arrested after he punched and repeatedly kicked a protester as he was being escorted out of the rally by security.

And Republican leaders scrambled to come up with a strategy to try to derail his campaign.

Republican leaders adamantly opposed to Donald J. Trump’s candidacy are preparing a 100-day campaign to deny him the presidential nomination, starting with an aggressive battle in Wisconsin’s April 5 primary and extending into the summer, with a delegate-by-delegate lobbying effort that would cast Mr. Trump as a calamitous choice for the general election.

And while the thought of that desperate last ditch campaign may have Trump shrugging his shoulders, while no doubt calling for the Republican establishment to be punched in the face, or waterboarded.

The idea of a third party must be a real nightmare.

Should that effort falter, leading conservatives are prepared to field an independent candidate in the general election, to defend Republican principles and offer traditional conservatives an alternative to Mr. Trump’s hard-edged populism.

The kind of nightmare that must have his hair standing on end, or threatening to leave him...

Because he must know that would finish off any chance he had of becoming President.

Just like the Republican leaders must know that they have only themselves to blame for being forced to risk scuttling their own party, rather than let Trump take it over.

By having allowed tea baggers to take over the GOP, in their frenzy to destroy Obama by whatever means necessary.

When they should have known long ago what kind of man they were getting.

The failed would be king of Atlantic City.

When Donald Trump opened his colossal Taj Mahal casino in 1990, he displayed the kind of glitzy showmanship that would define his career, a sales job that got Atlantic City believing that it was back in business, home to the “eighth wonder of the world.”

A man who promised to make that fading seaside resort great again. Only to see his dreams, and the dreams of so many others, go up in smoke.

A little over a year after the Taj opened, Trump’s casino operation filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, a provision that allows a company to reorganize without shutting down. Although it was a business bankruptcy, it took a personal toll.

In exchange for a lower interest rate on his debt and more time to make payments, Trump agreed to limits on his personal spending. He also sold the Trump Shuttle airline, as well as his yacht.

But a man who did learn from that Atlantic City experience, how to act and talk like a professional wrestler.

For this was his political school...

This is wrestler talk...

And this attack ad could only appeal to the lowest of wrestling fans...

Which is no doubt why Hillary Clinton is laughing her head off.

Because she must know that with Republicans tearing themselves apart, whatever Democratic candidate is nominated, will in a general election wipe the floor with a crude thug like Trump.

And of course I'm laughing too. Especially after reading what Trump's faithful butler once did, to try to soothe master's shattered nerves.

“Years ago,” reveals the profile, “he received an urgent warning from Mr Trump’s soon-to-land plane that the mogul was in a sour mood. Mr Senecal quickly hired a bugler to play Hail to the Chief as Mr Trump stepped out of his limousine to enter Mar-a-Lago.”

Because he's going to have to hire a full symphony orchestra before the election campaign is over.

Yup. Trump may be a dangerous demagogue, but he will hit the canvas with a sickening thud.

It will be a nightmare of a political wrestling match while it lasts.

But it will have a happy ending...

The Republicans have spent years demonizing government and creating the Tea Party. Their chief political philosopher/theorist seems to be Rush Limbaugh since Newt Gingrich seems to be staying in the background.

They have created their own monster, and he's one they don't own. All the money from people like the Koch brothers just is not working. Oh dear!

I have heard a number of people compare Trump to Silvio Berlusconi---same blather without substance and so on---but Berlusconi is a very successful businessman which Trump is not and he has better hair. Of course, Berlusconi had some weird policy ideas.

I wonder if he were PM of Italy today, would he be advocating a large boom across the Mediterranean to keep out migrants? Libya could pay for it.

Trump didn't make Hillary bark like a dog.She did that during a speech in Reno on Feb 15th.

And what's this about defending Republican principles? Is this someone's idea of a joke?
There is a reason why Trump is getting major crowds and keeps winning primaries..In fact there are many reasons.
Never mind all this bluster about walls and illegal immigrants.
There are many many reasons why the GOP doesn't want Trump.
And Eric Margolis sums it up rather well in his latest blog entry.

As the Trump revolution spreads, his enemies are desperately seeking ways to stop the Donald’s Juggernaut. Cries go to the heavens, “save the Republican Party before Trump wrecks it.”

As a life-long (but now fallen away) Republican, I say “good riddance”. More power to Trump to blast apart this deeply corrupt, cynical party steeped in political payoffs and religious fanaticism, and run by former used car dealers from Pocatello.

By the way Simon, how would feel if 11 million illegal immigrants came across the border into Canada?
Many people call Trump a facist. What do you call people who block hyways and impede other's from proceeding?
What do you call those who showed up in NY last night with their faces covered?
The very ones who complain about democracy. That's who.

Any idiot can lose money. It takes a special kind of idiot to lose money running a casino.

In a party which isn't keen on democracy, they sure got their fare share of the problem. It is in Republican states, that voter suppression laws were instigated. it was an effort to keep people from voting for the Democrats. Its also took a lot of voters out of the game, which might be useful to have in the game now.

The Republicans preached a form of non tolerance for years. Now they have the pinnacle of non tolerance and they're not happy about it. Forgive me, but Trump was democratically elected by Republicans. Now the party wants to subvert this democracy so they can get rid of what they were working to achieve.

its weird. welcome to American politics.

hi jrkrideau...exactly, the Republican leadership created the conditions for a Trump to thrive, and now they're running from the monster they helped create. As for Trump, I van't help feeling that he is just a poseur. He'll say anything to be elected, and does as I said in my post draw heavily on his wrestling infatuation, where as you know it's fair game to caricature ethnic stereotypes, and words are just hot air. But please don't tell his followers that, because I do want them to destroy the Republican party...

hi anon....I recognize that Trump is reflecting the legitimate anger of many Americans who a furious at the deindustrialization of their country, and have lost faith in their leaders. I also don't agree with people disrupting his rallies. I just find that his positions are too simplistic, like wrestler talk, and that he is stirring up passions that could tear the U.S. apart.

hi rumleyfips...the story of Atlantic City is a tragic one, and Trump isn't the only one to blame for what happened to it. But while he claims that he got out in time, the fact is he came in too late, and should have seen the writing on the wall. So he's not the brilliant businessman he would like us to believe he is...

hi e.a.f...I really don't care what happens to Trump, but if he splits the Republican Party he will have done us a favour. The only thing I worry about is that he is, whether he means to or not, starting fires that may be very difficult to put out....

What we are seeing in the USA is the end result of the demise of the free media. Donald Trump makes up so much fiction that the media can't even keep up to his lies. Pointing out the lies does not sell the ads that fund the media. The Republicans by encouraging the Tea Party and the media by themselves in order to sell up, have painted all politicians as liars who are only out for themselves so Trump's behaviour fits the public's expectations.Bernie Sanders campaign has been virtually overlooked by the biased media who only want to cover the outrageous and I fear that Hillary Clinton, being a career politician, who has taken many many regressive positions throughout her spotted career may lose to Trump because she is seen as very dishonest. When people are seen in that light, Trumps lies and posturing don't seem that bad any more. See what it is like to be in the media covering Trump's campaign. It is a very frightening experience. Even worse than covering Harper was during his reign in Canada. http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/cover_story/2016/03/on_the_trail_with_donald_trump_s_disgusting_press_corps.html?wpsrc=sh_all_mob_tw_top
