Has Stephen Harper's Bubble Finally Burst?
After so much bad news, after so many bad polls.
Or ones that defy reason.
The number of Canadians who believe the Conservative government is doing a good job of protecting the environment is inching upward, according to a recent poll – despite the federal government finding itself repeatedly under fire on environmental issues, and Canada remaining on track to fall substantially short of its Copenhagen greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets.
And make you wonder what kind of crazy ignorant country we're living in.
Isn't it good to know that Stephen Harper's bubble may finally have burst?
In our final poll of 2014 the Liberals have rebounded somewhat to open up a small but significant four-point lead. This ensures that the Liberals will complete the year with never once surrendering the lead and in a position which nearly doubles their disastrous outing in 2011. While the Conservatives have drawn into a very competitive position the bounce that they received from the security episodes of the late fall appears to be fading.
As I always predicted it would.
For I thought it was strange that a leader who was apparently on a roll, should look so desperate in those year end interviews...
And I knew that he would not escape his ghastly record.
For it is too horrifying, and the desire for change in this country is too strong.
But who knew the air would start hissing out of Harper's polls, even before his many scandals come back, or crawl back to haunt him?
And can you imagine what's going to happen to his polls after he gets soiled by all of them?
Because it ain't going to be pretty.
He's going to have to wear diapers too eh?
Even as he tries to put the focus back on the terrorist menace.
So he can pose as a Great Strong Leader, in the darkness of his closet...
But nothing will save him, the writing is on the wall.
And the monster and his foul Con regime, are going down.
Or back to the hell where they belong...

hi salamander...Harper has had some lucky breaks recently, and he has also been successful in moderating his image to a degree. But support for the war has been tracking gently downwards, and will not continue to boost his polls. And as for his moderate image that won't last long either. The opposition needs to focus on his vulnerabilities, and do a better job of communicating them to Canadians. As I said in my post Harper is vulnerable, and if the right pressure is applied in the New Year, his numbers will implode...
Deletestevie the tyrant will find a way to steal another election
ReplyDeletehi anon...he may well try, and he has jiggled the election laws to favour himself. But all of this can be used against him, and lose him more votes than he can win by cheating...
DeleteI heard Andre Coyne on the Radio expressing deep displeasure with Steve Harper. When they loose a guy like Coyne they have lost. Although likely like every other con win it comes to a vote nothing wiill have changed.
ReplyDeletehi Steve...Coyne blows hot and cold on Harper, as do so many others in the MSM. But nobody can deny he has behaved like a beast, and we can use this against him...
DeleteMerry x-mas Simon to you and yours.
ReplyDeleteHopefully, we can find solace in the New Year, for what we have been forced to endure under the Harper governments oppression.
hi anon...thank you, and Merry Xmas to you and yours. Despite everything I remain confident that this year will see the end of the Con regime. It may look mighty, but it has feet of clay...
DeleteMerry Christmas Simon....
ReplyDeleteFrom that Ekos poll...Here is the most profound statistic Ekos has identified....Cut n pasted..
"The most notable feature of the charts above is the reassembly of the core Conservative constituency of 2011. This is an important achievement for the CPC as much of the 2011 vote had become a diaspora to Liberal territory. We now find the CPC base is the familiar older, less educated, male dominated base that underpinned its success in 2011, with the until recently missing immigrant vote also returning. Unfortunately for the Tories, there just aren’t enough of them to produce a government at this time and the most recent trends suggest that the Liberals may be rebounding."
Remember that crowd of 10 people that came out for Ezra Levant and Brian Lilly`s excrement tour?...The group/pod was white-haired, old, very old...
That statistic identified by Ekos....Oh so true....
"
We now find the CPC base is the OLDER, LESS EDUCATED, male dominated base"....!!!!
Harper`s base, the longer he waits to drop the writ....His core voters, very old and very stupid, they are dying off fast..
Also, I know there are many very wise older voters, including my 81 year old mom who despises Stephen Harper, but many old, ancient people believe Stephen Harper, because of corporate controlled media newscasts..
I would like to add one more very important point..
The demographic that relies mostly on mainstream media, newspaper, radio and television news is the oldies...
Also, that same old demographic is least likely to be online...Meaning they don`t read Montreal Simon..The Straight Good, The Tyee and the hundreds of other real factual reporting sites.
2015 is the year where internet bloggers and websites will decide the election, we are many and can`t be bought off, intimidated or silenced..
Good Day
FUCK YOU, grant. There's a hell of a lot more literate "oldies" than there are illiterate assholes like you out there that are totally fed up with the likes of fucking morons like you and harper and we will make sure that we get out to vote while the likes of you and the rest of the PS4 and Xbox generation sit in their moms' basements and don't get off their lazy, stupid asses AGAIN because they can't read the goddamn calendar or they really are just too fucking lazy to go out and vote AGAIN! Blogs and websites don't win elections, fucktard. Votes do! As we used to say in Detroit to witless mutants like you: "FUCK YOU, YOU FUCKING FUCK!!!"
DeleteI admire you for your open mindedness, Simon. Letting an anthropomorphic miscreant like grant opine on your blog or website or whatever you call this thing you got here on the intertubes is pretty big of you. Keep up the good work!
Hey anonymous 11:11 pm, nice language...It wasn`t me that said that...That quote is from the EKOS poll linked in Simon`s article...You are pissing in the wind anon, and it`s blowing back all over you, in case you were wondering what that smell is..
DeleteHey foul-mouthed loser....This quote here...
""The most notable feature of the charts above is the reassembly of the core Conservative constituency of 2011. We now find the CPC base is the familiar older, less educated, male dominated base that underpinned its success in 2011, with the until recently missing immigrant vote also returning. Yes that quote...Where did that quote come from?....
From here..this link, a link in Simon`s article, a link to the EKOS poll Simon references..
http://www.ekospolitics.com/index.php/2014/12/final-update-2014-harpers-late-year-bubble-may-have-burst/
Read it asshole and go cry to Ekos...
I`m sure anonymous 11:11 pm.....Simon is going to delete your foul mouth...
Let me explain it to you, again, as it was over your head the first time.
Ekos polling has stated that Harper`s traditional voters are the old and less educated males....Not me, Ekos..And why did EKOS say it...
Because it is true, Generation old relies on stale corporate TV news, they are not internet savvy..
Oh, and by the way....Pretty sad for a person(?) like you to be spewing venom, piss and bile language on Christmas day...And you say blogs and websites mean nothing..Yet here you are, yanking your brains(?) out over a comment...A comment that clearly was/is above your pay grade...
Good Day Anonymouse
hi anon 11:11...look I try to encourage progressives to debate as passionately as possible, but we need to keep it civil, and there was no need to insult Grant that way. He was after all only quoting from that EKOS poll and it only shows what we have known all along: the over 65 demographic does support the Cons to a much larger degree than any age group. It's a fact, it's not an insult. Or as I prefer to see it as a challenge. What I don't like to see are generational slug matches because they don't lead anywhere. Since I work with both the younger and the older I am well aware that there are many decent seniors and young people, and as I told Grant what we have to do is speak to them, and better communicate why we need to evict the Cons. So please in future please measure your words more. I try to be as polite as possible with all who comment here, and I want to create a space where they feel free to express their views without being jumped on....
Deletehi Grant....yes the poll highlights two major problems we face in the coming campaign. The male vote which he has been successful in courting with his war act. And even more seriously the over 65 demographic which is the only one that shows massive support for the Cons. And then of course there is the youth vote which although favourable to us, hasn't voted in the past in the numbers we need. Since each of these demographics has different interests and needs, they need to be targeted separately with ads designed for each of them. This is a challenge but it should not prove impossible. We just need to smarter and more aggressive...
DeleteFinally, I'm sorry you were insulted by that anonymous commenter. As I explained to that person I don't want to see that happen again. I am a bit of a hot tempered guy myself, but I do take a couple of deep breaths before I answer comments that I don't agree with. I always try to be as polite as possible, and insist that others do the same....
Simon......I'm a 65 year old/young, "white-hair" from NS as you already know. Once a red head, I had a fiery temper.......still do when something rubs me the wrong way!
DeleteThe exchange between the two previous readers was a "bit over the top"..........
Seriously Grant Anon 11"11 and Simon,
ReplyDeleteI had a 78 year old neighbor who I could not reach in conversation about Harper's one man band dictatorship. He thought Harper was pretty fly for a white older guy and doing a fantastic job as leader? So there is personal proof through experience the EKOS Poll is mostly correct. Young people are mostly in "cyber space" and unfortunately have no time for voting. They could turn this around if they voted at least ABC! Are they willing to have planet destroyers ruin their lives? It seems so. Go figure...
Hi Simon,
ReplyDeletePlease count me out as part of the over 65 demographic who massively support the CONS. My 68th birthday is in February and I'm proud to say that I have voted in every election since I turned 21 (back in the stone age, 21 was the legal voting age). My first vote was in 1968, the year of Trudeau-mania, and yes, he got my vote. All but disowned from my family for that decision.
Never have and never will vote Conservative - despite having a beloved uncle who was an MPP under Robarts, and being from a family who, on my mother's side, come into this world carrying the 'conservative gene' in their DNA. Definitely am and always have been the black sheep in my family. Got kicked out of Sunday school at the age of 8 because I asked too many questions.
Simon, this is your blog and for that reason, definitely it is your call to allow people to post crude, venomous and largely misinformed comments . Perhaps not to the liking of most of your followers, but fortunately that type of comment on your blog is rare.
All the best. 2015, despite Ekos and other right-leaning polls, has to get better. Keep up the good work. We need you to get us through until the next election.
The language may have been old school, but the sentiment is true, Grant..and we seniors are more than fed up with being referred to as too illiterate to understand what is happening, and devoid of interest in social media..
ReplyDeleteTrue, most of us don't go around preceding the zombie apocalypse by staring, gape-mouthed, at a 'smart' phone all day, mindlessly following the exploits of a bunch of rich celebs who could care less what is happening in the world...yet we somehow find the time and the wherewithal to read, comment (and some of us even have (gasp!) blogs of a political nature..).and it's you witless media-addicted morons who don't even bother voting who are constantly whingeing about how the older generation stole everything from you...how does it feel to be mindlessly dumped into a pot of stereotypes and dismissed?
Don't like it much?
Ditto!
DeleteSeems many of you have reading comprehension difficulties, ...Let me break-down my comment..This quote was from the Ekos poll..
ReplyDelete"The most notable feature of the charts above is the reassembly of the core Conservative constituency of 2011.
I didn`t write that, Ekos did....The second part of my comment, talked about Ezra Levant and Brian Lilly`s failes freedomtour, a flop, no one attended, the few that did attend, the few that wanted to listen to Sun New`s 2 idiots were White-haired oldies, ...That is Sunnews`s demographic, that proof is here..In Simon`s own word, link below.
http://montrealsimon.blogspot.ca/2014/12/ezra-levant-and-brian-lilleys.html
My third point, which is true, the longer Harper waits to call an election the more grey-hairs die, fact...No offense meant, 80 year olds and 90`s are dying...Fact..
And then this, from my comment above..
"Also, I know there are many very wise older voters, including my 81 year old mom who despises Stephen Harper, but many old, ancient people believe Stephen Harper, because of corporate controlled media newscasts.."
There it is...I said there are many wise older voters, including my mother,,,Meaning everyone was not lumped into one pile of steaming you know what..
And my first comment finished off talking about computer illiterate seniors...and how seniors rely on traditional media, which in my opinion is corrupt, corporate corrupt..Sunnews, ..National Post..Globe n Mail...Corporate controlled media, beholden to big oil advertisers, CAPP, Suncore..KInder Morgan...Enbridge...
My mother who hates Harper does NOT go online....I have an 83 year old neighbor..This woman is not online..She loves Stephen Harper....She hates Mulcair...My mother has tried so many times to tell her about Harper`s sins..Her ears are deaf to logic, she watches Sunnews and Global News...
Lastly...I write stories about the environment, politics, death, life, hope...I don`t live in a dark basement...I vote in all elections, federal, civic and provincial..
There was no call for that anon`s bile language, the person clearly had/has a reading problem, or at the least an understanding problem..What`s up with his big tough Detroit talk..How many F words does a so-called senior need to use.....
Here are more facts...Older people are more likely to be racists..To be homophobes, Bible thumping not in my backyard...And yes, there are old people who don`t fall into that demographic..
Lastly...That nasty anon commenter totally dissed websites, blogs and the internet..Yet here he was, flailing away...Too much booze, too much anger..too much stupidity???...Who knows...
My site...I`ve had millions of page views, thousands who read everyday, broken many stories, made people talk, scooped the mainstream media many a time..And called out that media for being silent, or should I say, deliberately deaf, dumb and blind..
Never used one foul curse word on this site.....I love debate, will listen to all points of view...
F this and F that, that is all anon did, disgusting garbage....Anon 11:11 wasn`t debating, he was demonstrating that he`s an idiot..And that he can`t read, can`t understand...
Grant G didn`t dump on anyone, ....Stating facts...
Good Day
We older folk are all coming out of the woodwork so to speak and support Simon and are against the younger crowd that refuses to vote but don't hate them. Apathy has allowed the fool on the hill Parliament Hill that is Harper to usurp power. In the mean time the current younger generation is allowing their world is being turned upside down. Do not blame us put the blame where it belongs @ the so-called 1% they are the assholes excuse my strong language that own and control governments and do it all for personal greed and sucking the planet Earth dry.
ReplyDeleteNow I tried to turn this scene around to the best of my abilities since I was 18 years old but the monied few control the media and access to it. So do not blame us but get ready for the pain the rich few 1% are going to inflict on you as they did my generation.
I know I've been through hell and back for trying to fight them. Any hope that we can turn this dumb and dumber show of the filthy rich around? Young people get out of your tablets and cell-phones long enough to unite and end this rule by the rich and bring democracy back to this beautiful Canada best place on Earth where all foreigners want to move.
One last thing...I was recently in Burnaby hospital, spent 6 days, it was an amazing adventure...I wrote(narrated) the string of events...

Also this true story from several years ago..

Sorry Simon, you shouldn`t have to put up with this....And anyone who reads those 2 stories above would know in a New York minute just how wrong Anon 11:11 was....He/She twisted my words, bent them so they could vent, an anonymous swearfest...So disgusting they wouldn`t put their name behind it...Anon 11:11 must be real proud.
Talk to you later Simon(privately)....This group is beyond my level of debate....As anon 11:11 said...
"Blogs and websites don't win elections, fucktard. Votes do! As we used to say in Detroit to witless mutants like you: "FUCK YOU, YOU FUCKING FUCK!!!"
I admire you for your open mindedness, Simon. Letting an anthropomorphic miscreant like grant opine on your blog or website or whatever you call this thing you got here on the intertubes is pretty big of you. Keep up the good work!"
Sadly Simon....Many of your commenters defended that comment.
Good Day
Grant G I can not find how to comment on your website so through beautiful Simon's site I can tell you I visited yours and my heart is with you. Thank-you for sharing and get well soon please we need more of you on the planet...
DeleteHeart felt cheers,
Mogs Moglio
Hope you are having a happy festive season, Simon.
ReplyDeleteI note your comments about Canadians and the slight uptick in the approval of the Haperites environmental record.
Is it because the information of environmental damage is surpressed or hidden ?
Take the OBED Mine Containment "pond" spill of October 31, 2013 into the Athabasca River just downstream of Jasper National Park into the Athabasca River.
Am I the only person who knows about it ?
Hidden in the Obed mine website is this.
http://obed.ca/2013/10/31/overview/
At the time it was the largest toxic spill into a North American River EVER !!
670,000 cubic metres of toxic shit !
Then the Mt Polley mine spill near Quesnell BC took that dubious honour away.
But then, Obed is in Alberta where the environment is there just for the taking.
Is it because Canada is so damn big that Canadians don't seem to care about it?.
Happy New Year Noddy.
Lets hope enough Canadians care about Canada to " Heave Steve in '15 ! "
.
hi hinofan....thanks and happy festive season to you too !!! You know you're right, part of the problem is that Canada is so big some people think we can do anything to it, and get away with it. But as you point out, we are poisoning our beautiful land, and sooner or later we will pay for it. We need to shake-up many Canadians, and that isn't easy when the Cons try to hide the truth, and the media is either too lazy or lacks the resources to document the damage. But we can and must do it. The environment is becoming a bigger and bigger issue, despite that ghastly poll. And it will help destroy the Cons and liberate Canada AND Toyland. From me and Noddy and his friends Happy New Year to you and yours !!!!
DeleteGrant G and hinofan yo bro's we must rid our selves of this Harper and Clark parasites. They are disgusting hypocrites. More need to vote them into non existence.
ReplyDeletehi everybody...I hope you had a good Christmas or Festivus like I did. *Burp* And I see you have been having a lively discussion. So I just want to repeat what I said. I want this to be a safe space for political discussion, and since I love you all the older and the younger, I expect that progressives will treat each other with respect. Or just be nicer to each other because we are on the same side and we have a common enemy.
ReplyDeleteAnd that means dealing with the reality we face, and coming up with ways to encourage more older people to reject the Cons, and more younger people to get out and vote. And one way to start it seems to me, would be to concentrate our thoughts, and try to think of a 15-second or less messages that we could direct at both demographic groups, to convince them to change their ways. I'll write about this in another post. And when we have some winners, I'll turn those messages into videos, and start sending them out there in the hope that they will encourage others to follow. Let's turn our frustration and our anger into something positive, and start hammering those Cons in the New Year...
You and your sick herd of hatemongering Harper Haters will crash land after true and loyal Canadians in the ROC reelect another strong and stable Harper Conservative majority government... just as they did in 2011 and will do it again in 2015... believe it.
ReplyDeleteWhat meds are you on? "You and your sick herd of hatemongering Harper Haters will crash land after true and loyal Canadians in the ROC reelect another strong and stable Harper Conservative majority government... just as they did in 2011 and will do it again in 2015... believe it." You Anon 12:01 sound hate mongering to me my friend. Harper has made enemies of scientists doctors veterans and diplomats around the world and he ain't no friend of mine. Grow up and listen to the winds of change that are going to sweep Harper cons out of power believe me!

Which Side?
http://www.jacksonbrowne.com/discography/2014-standing-in-the-breach/lyrics/#song8
WHICH SIDE?
You might be a young man with the mountain in his step
In search of El Dorado, but you haven't found it yet
Or you might be an old man with his whole life at his back
And you can hear eternity whispering down the track
Or maybe you're a woman, or just about to be
And you can feel the generations swimming in your sea
But you know that it's coming, as surely as the dawn
The battle for the future, baby, which side are you on?
Come on come on come on if you're coming
Come on come on come on
Come on come on come on if you're coming
Which side are you on?
Come on come on come on if you're coming
Battle lines are drawn
Come on come on come on if you're coming
Which side - which side are you on?
Which side?
The corporations attacking
The natural world - drilling and fracking
All done with the backing of the craven and corrupt
Or the ones who fight
For the Earth with all their might
And in the name of all that's right
Confront and disrupt
There's a restlessness out in the street there's a question in the air
How long if this theft goes on will our country still be here?
People know the game is rigged even as they play
They see their expectations slowly slip away
They've got subsidies for billionaires, there's a bailout for the banks
A monopoly on medicine, and a sale on armored tanks
The whole damned country's being sold - out that revolving door
Between Washington and Wall Street like it's one big Dollar Store
Come on come on come on if you're coming
Come on come on come on
Come on come on come on if you're coming
Which side are you on?
Come on come on come on if you're coming
Battle lines are drawn
Come on come on come on if you're coming
Which side - which side are you on?
Which side?
The bankers and their special friends
Who rob you time and again
Who like to pretend they're the only game in town
Or the people who
Hope with everything they do
They can build something new
And turn this world around
Who owns the elections? Who profits either way?
Who ends up with all that money politicians pay?
To be the fearless leader, to put themselves across
To be the one entrusted with the profit and the loss
You try hard to believe that when you cast your vote it counts
But elections are won with money in ever larger amounts
Take the money out of politics and maybe we might see
This country turn back into something more like democracy
Come on come on come on if you're coming
Come on come on come on
Come on come on come on if you're coming
Which side are you on?
Come on come on come on if you're coming
Battle lines are drawn
Come on come on come on if you're coming
Which side - which side are you on?

"... start hammering those Cons in the New Year.." Simon you mean start suing the cons for violating The Canadian Constitution The Canadian Bill of Rights and lastly what Harper cons hate The Charter of Rights and Freedoms the elder Trudeau put into effect. Let's get tough with these freaks no more pussy footing around I say a class action lawsuit against all cons and their ghastly leader the hideous stench filled Harper is the solution.
ReplyDeleteI forgot to mention this little gem out of Saskatchewan I've always loved people from there and now the Sask cons have proved my love for Sask people correct:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/conservatives-admit-making-robocalls-in-saskatchewan-1.1304586
Interesting eh? This was 2013 so it is not exactly breaking news but to me shows the 'con party' is breaking ranks. Eh?
Dave,
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for the Jackson Browne link I personally was wondering if he was eliminated after his hit that included the lyric "...I want to know who the men in the shadows are.." fortunately he is still with us. Running on empty running on scared was his best known but this is classic Jackson Browne:
"...I want to know who the men in the shadows are
I want to hear somebody asking them why
They can't be counted on to tell us who our enemies are
But they're never the ones to fight or to die..."
http://www.lyricsfreak.com/j/jackson+browne/lives+in+the+balance_20068574.html
Jackson Browne – Lives In The Balance Lyrics
I've been waiting for something to happen
For a week or a month or a year
With the blood in the ink of the headlines
And the sound of the crowd in my ear
You might ask what it takes to remember
When you know that you've seen it before
Where a government lies to a people
And a country is drifting to war
There's a shadow on the faces
Of the men who send the guns
To the wars that are fought in places
Where their business interests run
On the radio talk shows and TV
You hear one thing again and again
How the USA stands for freedom
And we come to the aid of a friend
But who are the ones that we call our friends?
These governments killing their own?
Or the people who finally can't take anymore
And they pick up a gun or a brick or a stone
And there are lives in the balance
There are people under fire
There are children at the cannons
And there is blood on the wire
There's a shadow on the faces
Of the men who fan the flames
Of the wars that are fought in places
Where we can't even say the names
They sell us the president the same way
They sell us our clothes and our cars
They sell us everything from youth to religion
The same time they sell us our wars
I want to know who the men in the shadows are
I want to hear somebody asking them why
They can't be counted on to tell us who our enemies are
But they're never the ones to fight or to die
And there are lives in the balance
There are people under fire
There are children at the cannons
And there is blood on the wire
