The Con Media and the Religious Fanatics Go After Justin Trudeau
Ever since Justin Trudeau came to power, the Con media in this country has found any excuse to attack him like a pack of rabid zombies.
But now they may have found the foulest excuse yet.
Now they're accusing the son of the man who brought in our Charter of Rights of violating that charter.
And like the spiritual son of Harper, the religious fanatic Andrew Scheer, who is accusing Trudeau of imposing his values on the country.
Opposition leader Andrew Scheer is accusing the Liberal government of "imposing" the prime minister's views on faith groups that fear they will be denied funding for summer jobs due to their positions on abortion.
"I believe that the federal government should respect the freedoms that Canadians enjoy to have different beliefs and that by imposing personal values of Justin Trudeau on a wide variety of groups is not an appropriate way to go," Scheer said.
So are those shabby Con stooges like John Ibbitson.
Thousands of student summer-job grants, along with a brand-new community-service program, have been rendered unavailable to organizations and people of faith, thanks to an obnoxious new Liberal values oath.
This oath is not only offensive; on its face, it's a clear violation of the very Charter rights that it claims to defend.
Or the stooges at the Conservative Broadcasting Corporation:
So let's be very clear, it is all nonsense.
The values Justin Trudeau is defending are not just his values, they are the values of Canada.
The summer jobs program does NOT violate the Charter.
The federal government’s decision to require a commitment to human rights in its Canada Student Job (CSJ) grants represents a bold move to advance equality.
The controversial attestation box that must be checked on the application requires CSJ applicants to agree that both the specific summer job and the organization’s core mandate respect Canadian human rights, including the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The attestation stresses that these respected rights include reproductive rights and equality rights.
And since the requested commitment is only aimed at groups that would use tax payer money to hire students to attack the rights of women and gay Canadians or any other marginalized groups.
By for example putting up posters like these on university campuses...
As Scheer wants them to do.
The attestation will affect only a handful of religious groups, and will not affect those who run such things as summer camps.
All the attestation demands is that the applicants not hire students for the summer whose only function will be to work on projects that actively oppose or undermine Charter rights. A faith-based institution that wants to hire students to run faith-based summer day camps or to coordinate programming for a faith-based sponsored refugee family are able to apply for the grants.
So if Andrew Scheer would have you believe that reaffirming support for our precious Charter of Rights and the equality of all Canadians, amounts to the crushing of religious rights...
Spidey Scheer, his fellow religious fanatics, and the screeching Con stooges in our shabby media, should stop lying like thieves, and understand this:
Even if there was a collision of rights, and there isn't, human rights must trump religious rights every day of the year, or we'll end up living in a theocracy.
The Cons are in no position to criticize anyone after the way they raped the rights of women.
A women's rights group is charging that the Harper government has cut funding for 11 women's groups in the last two weeks, just prior to June's G8 summit at which maternal health to a key part of the agenda.
The funding cuts were revealed a day after Conservative Sen. Nancy Ruth advised a gathering of women's groups that they risk a backlash from the government unless they "shut the f--k up" on the abortion issue.
Or the way their fallen leader and his stealthy bigots treated gay people.
Who were systematically discriminated against and defunded, for almost ten years.
And who along with the women of this country would be discriminated against even more fiercely if Andrew Scheer, the son of Harper, ever became Prime Minister.
For he does not believe in a woman's right to choose, believes gay Canadians are "abhorrent" is in hock up to his ears with the social conservatives who made him Con leader.
And is, and always will be, unfit to be a Canadian Prime Minister.
And yes, the Charter is safe in the hands of the son of the man who brought it in...
The river of time flows towards justice.
And in the face of our ugly Con media, and the religious fanatics of this country.
Justin Trudeau is defending that sacred Charter as he always has...
I always thought the Charter afforded me freedom from religion.
ReplyDeleteHi rumleyfips....religious fanatics are always claiming they are being persecuted, even as their rabid mumbo jumbo makes life miserable for others. But as I said in my post, when human rights collide with religious rights, human rights must prevail.
DeleteThank you Simon for taking on those bastards in the Con media. I can't believe how many of them are attacking Trudeau and defending those who don't believe in the equality of women and LGBT people. We need to do something to teach them a lesson.
ReplyDeleteHi anon....you're welcome, I can't believe the way those shabby scribblers are behaving. Talk about a bought media, they are making Canada look like a banana republic. As for teaching them a lesson there is only one thing we can do. Organize a mass boycott of certain media outlets. Normally that would amount to trying to stop a tank with a BB gun. But since many media outlets have one foot in the grave, it just might work. More on that later...
DeleteActually anon we did: we elected Trudeau.
ReplyDeleteHi rumleyfips....yes that's true, and it would be the sweetest form of revenge. But it must be noted that the Con media have boosted Scheer's polls, and at some point it may be necessary to at the very least turn up the heat....
DeleteThe Women's March is today, the anniversary of the Bigly Failed Inauguration. At a time when the basic humanity of women, LGBT people, people of color, immigrants, the disabled, and countless other marginalized minorities, including those with multiple marginalized identities, is under attack from the orange fascist and his acolytes around the world, Canada is luckier than ever to have an ardent defender of those rights in charge like Trudeau père et fils (his father in spirit).
ReplyDeleteCanada is not going to waste taxpayer monies to support groups that would deny people basic human rights on specious grounds. If they want to provide their services, let them raise money from the free market they worship so much. The only thing Trudeau is saying is that you can't use your declared status as an "advocacy group" or "health agency" or what have you, to go and preach on the public dime.
It's a very welcome departure and distinction from the de facto Russian theocracy operating below the border, where now medical practitioners of all stripes are allowed to cite "personal beliefs" to not provide any treatment at all to patients whose status ruffles their religious feathers. Trump just granted "religious refusal" authorization that would shield bigoted "medical providers" (whether it's doctors, nurses, med students, even paramedics) from liability, even if they go so far as to not provide any medical care to everyone from LGBT people to divorcees and single parents. Not just "LGBT-specific" care (i.e. AIDS treatment or gender-transition surgery), or abortion, or contraceptives, but routine physicals and emergency CPR for people they just don't like! Basically, you can now say as a paramedic that saving a person's life in a car accident is a violation of your religious principles because "ew, I don't like that car accident victim, he's gay." Or as a nurse, you can say "ew, I don't want to treat that premature baby in the ICU, because his parents aren't married!"
This is what being "pro-life" looks like? No, this is the kind of "religious freedom" that Trudeau rightly wants to curtail, because it's downright inhumane! It not only violates the Charter but the Hippocratic Oath to first do no harm! But I'm sure Trump must have granted an exception requiring medical practitioners to give the best, top-notch care to ephebophilic Republican presidents who cheat on their (multiple) wives with porn actresses and make crude comments about their daughters...
The U.S. is going to end up needing intervention from Canada under the same programs they send to third-world countries. We're already in dire need of a massive psychiatric hold.
Hi Jackie...the way Donald Trump has revived the grotesque bigots of the religious right is an absolute nightmare. And with Scheer as Con leader, and his stooges in the media, the same thing could happen here. I find it stunning that so many in the media seem to think that religious rights come before human rights. Although I'm an atheist I've always had a live and let live approach when it comes to those religious fanatics, even though they have not returned the favour. But not any longer....
DeleteThe idea of Cons claiming that Justin Trudeau is violating the Charter of Rights after the way the Harper regime behaved, is nuts. Those Cons are the biggest liars and fakers this country has ever seen.
ReplyDeleteHi anon....yes, it is outrageous isn't it? That's why I included two examples of the bestiality of the Cons, those great defenders of the Charter of Rights. I fear that many Canadians may have forgotten what the Harperites did during the Decade of Darkness, but I don't and I will do my best to remind people what a nightmare it was...
DeleteRob Silver has a great Twitter thread where he takes on the Con media and wonders if the bigots from La Meute held a summer camp for Nazis, could they demand money too? Also he wonders why none of the male columnists mention LGBT rights. One more reason the con media needs to be purged.
ReplyDeleteSo media that you disagree with just be purged, that is authoritarian, you have no right to purge any media, just as the right doesn't have the right to purge the left. Freedom of Speech, freedom of expression, freedom of the press.
DeleteHi anon @6:17 pm...thanks for the tip, and it's an excellent thread. I may try to include it in one of my next posts. And yes, I especially liked how he pointed out that none of the male columnists had even mentioned LGBT rights. Even though those cowardly religious fanatics are always going after gay people. Shame on those bastards, die Con media die...
DeleteHi Gyor....maybe a better word than purged would be renewed, because even some in the Con media admit that old white men are over represented. The New York Times has an ad today calling on young journalists to send their resumes in. And we need to do the same thing here. And then there's the ideological balance. How many left-wing pundits can you name? Not many I bet...
Delete1. I'm pro-choice including third term abortions, but I think many of my side's arguments are awful and I don't support demonizing everyone who is antiabortion or who thinks there should be limits on late term abortions.
ReplyDelete2. All religious organizations should be unable to get government grant period, the tax free status of religious is grant too much already.
3. Around half or more of the antiabortion movement are women, including in leadership positions, they do not see them as antiwomen, in fact they likely believe they are PROTECTING girls (because they consider fetuses humans), and that it is we (prochoicers) who are antiwomen for what they see as killing little girls. It's not a view I agree with, and very much oppose, but I can try and see it from their perpective, so I can understand the other side better.
4. There are zealots on both sides of this issue, in fact there is almost no real dialog between the opposing sides.
5. Andrew Scheer is not the religious fanatic you paint him as, yes he is religious but as far as social conservatives go he's a moderate, he's no Brad Trost (hope I got that name right). He is making a bad choice in making this an issue.
6. Justin Trudeau has his own social conservative side on the issue of sex work.
Hi Gyor...l'm glad to see that we still agree on a few things😉 My view on abortion can be summed up like this: it's up to woman to decide one way or the other. And as for those who don't believe in abortion, they are free not to have one. Bu the should not force their views on others.
DeleteHowever, you're wrong about Scheer. He is a serious religious fanatic, and since he owes his victory to Trost and other SoCon extremists, he is not much more than their tool.
Finally, I'm not up on the sex worker issue, but I promise to do some research, and consult Donald Trump and maybe that old whore Jason Kenney, before getting back to you...
I found it refreshing that Trudeau made this move. It's about time. All they had to do is uphold the standards and laws of this land. Luckily open-faced racism is not as problematic as it is south (but it still unfortunately exists), but if it was, I would expect some language respecting the Charter and race be in order to.
ReplyDeleteHi Beijing....I too am glad, but I'm afraid this land is starting to depress me. How in the year 2018 are so many putting religious rights before Charter rights, and in particular before the human rights of women and LGBT Canadians? Hate mongering is a booming business, almost nothing is being done to stop it. And I can't help feeling that the complacency of so many , and the sick influence of Trump, are leading us to a very bad place. Oh well, luckily I still have my kilt, hello Bonnie Scotland...🚀
ReplyDeleteAre Pro-Life and Pro-Choice Women Any Closer to Finding Common Ground?

Francis Crick and James Watson are the co-discoverers of the thread-like DNA molecule. Crick described himself as agnostic, "with a strong inclination towards atheism". In 2003, Watson spoke at Youngstown State University and was asked by one student. "So you don't believe in God?" The scientist answered "Oh no, absolutely not. The biggest advantage to believing in God is you don't have to understand anything, no physics, no biology. I wanted to understand."
Yet thousands of years ago the psalmist wrote: "For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb...your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be." (Psalm 139: 13,16). The phrase "you knit me together" anticipates that we are literally knitted or woven together at the molecular level.

"Herein is another challenge because the right to oppose abortion is also protected by the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms."
