Donald Trump and the 2020 Nightmare
Donald Trump has only been in office for five months, but to me and I'm sure many others all over the world it seems longer than that. Much longer.
So you can imagine how I felt when I heard that the orange oaf is already making plans to occupy the Oval Office for a full EIGHT years.
And that I might have to endure his insane behaviour for what might seem like forever.
For let's face it, this is insanity.
And this is no joke.
President Trump is holding the first fundraiser of his 2020 re-election campaign later this month at the Trump International Hotel near the White House.
So much for the theory Trump would get bored of the job (or distance himself from his business empire). He’s thinking eight years; the June 28 dinner with him is billed as a “BIG LEAGUE” event for his supporters.
The bush league Donald Trump is trying to turn his presidency into a dynasty, by trying to distract us to death.
Trumpism is a form of collective gaslighting at Twitter speed. It is founded on the principle that velocity trumps veracity — perfect for the president’s manic personality. It reflects the president’s intuitive sense — through his own acute experience — of limited attention spans. It seeks to achieve dominance through a whirlwind of individually meaningless but cumulatively manipulative statements.
So he can turn his country into a police state...
There are many things that concern me about the Trump presidency — in fact, few don’t — but the frivolous blurring of truth and untruth, fact and falsehood, is the most grave. Liberty depends on facts. When the distinction between truth and lies disappears there is no basis for the rational discourse on which the organization of a free society, governed by laws, depends. Disorientation propagates itself — and disoriented people are more inclined to accept a despot as sole font of truth.
With the enthusiastic support of some of his most fanatical followers, who can't tell the difference between the truth and a lie.
Or the difference between a strong leader and a fascist thug...
And the good news?
That blind loyalty won't last long, now that the Republicans have finally unveiled the second version of their Trumpcare plan.
Senate Republicans, who for seven years have promised a repeal of the Affordable Care Act, took a major step on Thursday toward that goal, unveiling a bill to make deep cuts in Medicaid and end the law’s mandate that most Americans have health insurance.
For as Obama has pointed out, the new bill is fundamentally mean.
“The Senate bill, unveiled today, is not a health care bill,” Mr. Obama wrote on his Facebook page. “It’s a massive transfer of wealth from middle-class and poor families to the richest people in America. It hands enormous tax cuts to the rich and to the drug and insurance industries, paid for by cutting health care for everybody else.”
And even the dumbest Trump supporters should be able to understand this...
Or this mother's desperate story.
Without health care coverage through Medicaid, Kaden might not be alive. With President Trump and Republicans in the White House threatening to slash more than $1 trillion from Medicaid — the program that Kaden and I depend on for coverage — my worries have gone from how we’ll manage our conditions to whether we’ll survive them.
There will be many more protests like this one.
And when his loyal supporters finally realize they've been betrayed.
They will turn on Trump with a fury.
And his 2020 dreams will go up in smoke...
I have farts that are more popular with Americans then Trump. He'll be a one term wonder.
ReplyDeletehi Gyor...I hope you're right, and I believe that too. But just in case we're both wrong keep a few of those farts handy... ;)
DeleteThe last one-term preznit was Bush the Elder, and that was a quarter century ago. Trump support among Republicans remains rock-solid.
ReplyDeleteWhile the ACHA is a horrible piece of legislation that is likely to get worse before being passed, many of the cuts don't start to bite until after 2020. And as you know, any law that angers liberals will find huge support among Republican voters even if they take it on the chin too. Inflicting pain is what motivates cons these days. So barring a highly unlikely first-term impeachment, there's every reason to believe Trump will be a two-term president.
hi anon...some of what you say is true, but Trump can't really be compared to any other president, and polls show that some Republicans at least have already abandoned him. Also it won't be hard for the Democrats to paint a picture of what Trumpcare might do to millions, including many of Trump's supporters. And then there's the fatigue factor. Trump likes chaos, but I doubt most Americans do, and many of them will simply tire of him...
DeleteMueller will fix
ReplyDeletehi anon...yes, I always start my day the same way. Our Mueller who art in heaven deliver us from evil... ;)
DeleteOnce all of the Russian skeletons come tumbling out of Trump's closet, the road to impeachment will be fully in place and this whole sordid moment in history will grind down and one day mercifully end.
ReplyDeleteJD
Ha! The Russia hoax is over, even Simon didn't bring it up. Here's a couple good tweets from Trump himself, care to rebuttal any of these JD?
DeleteBy the way, if Russia was working so hard on the 2016 Election, it all took place during the Obama Admin. Why didn't they stop them?
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 22, 2017
…Why did Democratic National Committee turn down the DHS offer to protect against hacks (long prior to election). It's all a big Dem HOAX!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 22, 2017
…Why did the DNC REFUSE to turn over its Server to the FBI, and still hasn't? It's all a big Dem scam and excuse for losing the election!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 22, 2017
PS it's going to be a loooooong 8 years for you progressives. Your heads must be exploding already.
-MC
Nope. Impeachment requires that 2/3rds of senators vote in favour, in other words, 66 of the 100 senators. Dems and the Indies who caucus with them currently hold 48 seats. That means they'd have to peel away 18 Republicans to impeach, which ain't gonna happen.
DeleteIn 2018, only 8 Republican-held senate seats are up for grabs. If Dems win all of them, that would still leave 10 Republican votes to peel away for impeachment. But with gerrymandering, the GOP will win every toss-up election in 2018, so we're unlikely to see much of a shift.
Finally, today's Teahadi Republicans are a different breed from the ones that failed to support Nixon. Over the years, Gingrich, McConnell and Trump have established that you can systematically violate political norms without paying an electoral price. That's why Republicans can and will ram through Trumpcare without debate, without worrying that this will cost them in 2018. Similarly, failing to impeach Trump won't cost them either. Most Republicans are more afraid of a challenge to the right than to the left.
GOP will impeach and try to create a soft landing where Pence can rule.
DeleteHow do you "rebuttal" a series of stupid questions?
DeleteHow do you stop something when, by the time you can determine with certainty that it's occurred, it's already been done. Any public attention that Obama might have directed to "Russia working hard on the 2016 election" would have been attacked as politically motivated. Anyone who doesn't understand this is a fool.
What other details regarding the DNC turning down the offer of protection do we need to make a conclusion of "HOAX"? Trump won't make the effort to provide them, so what's there to "rebuttal"?
How did refusal to turn over a server become "an excuse for using the election"?
...
Gerrymandering affects Congressional electoral district boundaries. Senators are elected on a statewide vote.
the Russians did it is as old as the dog ate my homework
DeleteMC, John B. explained it best "How do you "rebuttal" a series of stupid questions?"
DeleteYou quote Trump's tweets like they were scripture when in essence, they're the rantings of a madman, sad:(.
Trump surviving 4 years is a stretch, winning again? Laughable.
The only exploding that will happen will be the walls tumbling down around him or from his clogged arteries when they're hit with a massive Kentucky Fried Coronary.
JD
hi MC... the only reason I haven't mentioned the Russian issue recently is because there are so many other Trump scandals to write about. You know, if it's Friday it must be Trumpcare, if it's Thursday it's the Trump mob's looting of America, etc etc.
DeleteBut the Russia story is a real story, and you quoting Trump's ballooning tweets won't make it go away....
I'm sure when he was announced he was running for president you thought that was laughable too JD. When we was campaigning to be the Republican candidate. The idea of him beating Hillary was laughable too right?
DeleteI bet you laughed right up until the inauguration. Then you cried.
And you will cry again in 2020.
-MC
"When we was campaigning to be the Republican candidate."
DeleteNow you sound just like a Trump supporter MC. "We was so happy when Trump won we went back to finish grade 3".
JD
Word has it, Simon, that his supporters have, uh, militias and stuff.
ReplyDeletehi JD... I like that. Forget the Trumpet and the walls of Jericho. Play the KFC song and watch the Donald come tumbling down... ;)
DeleteThe Democrats need to have a credible candidate. Sorry Bernie its to late and you sold off when you should have bought. More importanltly they need policy, and the Repugnets can pick off anything sensible with their squirrel guns.
ReplyDeleteTrump is now a rodeo clown , there to entertain the crowd, collect the money thrown his way and distract the bulls to help keep the riders from being gored when they are thrown off. A noisy horn and red flag can only do so much to protect a motley crew of amateurs and they will tire of him once the mauling starts. Got to blame some one why not the clown!
ReplyDeleteRT
hi RT...I too believe that Trump will end up getting gored by his own party. I believe that if he does survive more than a year in office without dropping dead, or being carried away in a strait jacket, he will divide the Republicans so badly, they will pay a heavy price in 2020....
Deletehi anon 4:10... Impeachment is indeed hard to imagine, but not impossible. If Trump is seen not only to be incompetent, but also a maniac out of control, I can see the Democrats gaining control of the Senate. And that can have a snowball effect, which may not lead to impeachment, but could very easily lead to a resignation...
ReplyDeletehi Liberalandlovingit....yes, I've seen some pictures of Trump's "militias," and I must say I'm not impressed. Once they called them the Ku Klux Klan, and you know what happened to them...
ReplyDeleteat the rate Trump is going there might not be an election. they'll be mired in war or dissolved as a country.
ReplyDeleteThe Democrats do not have a candidate at this time which will appeal to the average American voter and when you consider how few vote, Trump could be re elected by his base. His base will stay with him until they either discover they have nothing left and then they'll blame whomever or they are dead.
