Donald Trump's Monstrous Thanksgiving
WhoWhatWhy
Donald Trump is spending the Thanksgiving holiday at his Mar-a-Lago castle, no doubt surrounded by his court of bigots and other deplorables.
And he's urging his people to unite and support him so he can make America great again.
But they would be crazy to do that, because they have nothing to celebrate.
And this Turkey Day in America couldn't be more monstrous.
Now we find out that the maniac who believes global warming is a hoax, is planning to blind us so we can't see the planet burn.
Donald Trump is poised to eliminate all climate change research conducted by Nasa as part of a crackdown on “politicized science”, his senior adviser on issues relating to the space agency has said.
Nasa’s Earth science division is set to be stripped of funding in favor of exploration of deep space, with the president-elect having set a goal during the campaign to explore the entire solar system by the end of the century.
Now we find out that his Secretary of Education will be the billionaire Betsy DeVos, a religious fanatic who wants to dismantle the public school system.
And is also an anti-gay activist.
A good friend of the Koch brothers.
And the sister of Erik Prince, the founder of the infamous Blackwater mercenary organization, who is also an anti-gay bigot, a fierce opponent of women's rights, and a huge Trump supporter.
Who will no doubt be called upon to create Trump's praetorian guard, or help "cleanse" the inner cities.
No wonder minorities are arming themselves.
And yes, as Charles Blow who refused to attend Trump's meeting at the New York Times writes, who could unite behind a government like that one?
Or get along with a man like that abominable orange demagogue?
I will say proudly and happily that I was not present at this meeting. The very idea of sitting across the table from a demagogue who preyed on racial, ethnic and religious hostilities and treating him with decorum and social grace fills me with disgust, to the point of overflowing.
Let me tell you here where I stand on your “I hope we can all get along” plea: Never. You are an aberration and abomination who is willing to do and say anything — no matter whom it aligns you with and whom it hurts — to satisfy your ambitions.
When the only option for decent Americans is resistance...
No, Mr. Trump, we will not all just get along. For as long as a threat to the state is the head of state, all citizens of good faith and national fidelity — and certainly this columnist — have an absolute obligation to meet you and your agenda with resistance at every turn.
You know, I can't help but wonder what kind of Thanksgiving the progressives who voted for third parties, ruined their ballots, or didn't vote at all are having.
Have they finally realized their terrible mistake?
Or are they still wailing "Hillary Clinton is worse than Trump!!!"
Because if they are, all I can say is Happy Thanksgiving.
And may they choke on their turkey...
Show him no respect. Cook him as he would cook the planet, in the heat of his madness.
Stand up for the human rights of millions of our neighbours.
Support the Great American Resistance...
Robert Walker, the former chairman of the U.S. House Science, Space and Technology Committee and a Trump adviser wants to move climate research to other agencies.
ReplyDeleteRobert Walker, the advisor in question, is a former chairman of the U.S. House Science, Space and Technology Committee. His knowledge of the Climate change issues does not say much for the knowledge base of Republican congressman.
Well he might not be as bad as Lamar Smith but, somehow a Congressman on the U.S. House Science, Space and Technology Committee who does not seem to know what the IPCC is does not give me confidence,
There is a fascinating interview with him on the CBC program As It Happen. He does not even get the memes correct!
Interview and transcript available at

Asfor Betsy DeVos, what is wrong with a alt-right religious fanatic who wants to dismantle the US education system?
Countries like China and India must be watching this appointment with amazement and delight. Talk about competitive advantage down the road!
OTOH, they are unlikely to like the NASA cuts. Both are extremely vulnerable to extreme weather conditions.
Thanks by the way for introducing me to the term kakistocracy. Trump must be trying for a world record. I had thought the Brazilian cabinet, after the recent "legal" coup was about as bad as one could get but those guys are just crooks, most appear more or less sane.
Trump's evolving cabinet looks more like a therapy group in a psychiatric hospital. I really did not like either candidate but when Trump won, shrugged and said with a decent cabinet and some half-sane advisers it might be okay.
hi jrk...yes, everything depends in my opinion, on who Trump appoints to his cabinet. And when people like me are reduced to praying that Mitt Romney gets the nod, you know the situation is desperate. I really can't believe this is happening, and Trump's denial of climate change strikes me as madness. I cling to the hope that he will moderate his act now that he doesn't need his most ugly supporters. But I hear he's planning to go on a "Victory Tour" soon, so that's not too encouraging...

I'm a little tired of you casting shade on progressives who voted for third parties. Surely as an NDP voter, you recognize this argument for what it is - antidemocratic bullshit! If the Cons had won the last election by a razor-thin margin over the Libs, would you have dumped on yourself?
ReplyDeleteAs I've told you before, Green votes didn't cost Clinton the election. Most of the people who voted Green were in safe Dem districts. They voted Green in the knowledge that the Dems would carry the district regardless.
What cost Clinton the election was GOP vote suppression in key states controlled by GOP governors - things like ridiculous demands for ID, refusal to count provisional ballots, 5-hour line-ups to vote and potential hacking of voting equipment. Exit polls show that Clinton carried the key states she needed to win. Exit polling is highly accurate and used to judge the fairness of elections around the world. It accurately measures who people voted for, but cannot measure whether their vote was counted.
This is where the GOP won. Prominent computer scientists are urging an audit in key states after noticing that "Clinton received 7 per cent fewer votes in Wisconsin counties that relied on electronic voting machines compared to counties that used optical scanners and ballot papers."
As of today, Clinton leads Trump by over 2 MILLION votes in the popular vote count, and that's with 1.5 million Cali votes left to count. If current trends hold, over 3 million more voters will have voted for Clinton than Trump. Your rage would be better directed at the GOP than at your fellow progressives.
You are missing is the difference in the political system. A third party vote in Canada can make a lot of sense for any number of reasons even if is obvious that party will not win that election. And the vote only affects one riding.
DeleteIn the US presidential election it is a straight winner-take-all race between basically two candidates across the entire country.
hi anon...I'm not just blaming them. Many facts contributed to Clinton's defeat including herself. But although I haven't checked the most recent figures, there is no doubt that support for third parties did contribute in about four or five states to Trump's victory. And there is no excuse at all for progressives who didn't vote at all or spoiled their ballots. In normal times I don't care what happens, but when facing such a threat from the extreme right, I think progressives should unite, to defeat the most dangerous enemy. Because that didn't happen we are all going to live with the consequences, and they won't be pretty...
DeleteLooks like the protests are dying down on the east coast because of the weather. By January the left will be demoralized and will surrender.
ReplyDelete-MC
Surrender to who?The left? I am a centrist and could have never voted for Trump? I would go further and say that it should not be a function of where you fit in the political spectrum as to whether you support Trump. Bottom line if you possess even the smallest modicum of common sense you would never support Trump.
DeleteHey anon... that ship has sailed a long time ago. All hail Trump!
Delete-MC
hey MC...are you wearing an orange wig or are you just wigged out? Please try to control yourself, and don't stand in the window giving Nazi salutes. I'm sure it would upset your neighbours, because this is Canada not the U.S....
Deletetrump is a decoy for the hideous Paul Ryan agenda. He gets to play President and enrich himself, his family, and his mates while Ryan and friends gut social security, medicaid, Obamacare, and now it looks like, public education. trump isn't gonna run shit.
ReplyDeleteAmerica is fucked, but it means the world will survive. That is all that matters because America did this to themselves, they need to fucking own it. Fuck off America, fuck you.
hi anon...I see you have strong feelings about the results of the U.S. election, and I must say there are times when I share them. The Americans have made their bed and they are going to have to lie in it. How long they will lie in it when they realize that Trump is only in it for himself remains to be seen. The fact is the angry orange made some very extravagant promises and will now have a very hard time trying to keep them. So I don't think his honeymoon will last for very long...
DeleteThe Americans voted for him. Now they can live with him and the repercussions of their decisions.
ReplyDeleteAs to climate change research, the U.S.A. isn't the only country in the world who has this information, so even if trump were to purge it, its some where. As to NASA, the organization is very large and will survive him.
his choice for education is a worry because these charter schools, well any one can open them, get the money, not provide an education and then run off with the money. However, public education will survive if people want it to by ensuring their cities and states provide education. the problem is the federal government provides a lot of funding and that may come to an end. However education inn the U.S.A. in some areas is so bad, it doesn't really matter what happens. Again its a case of people voted for him and or didn't vote and this will be a lesson Americans will have to learn the hard way.
It will not take long for the "angry white" voters to realize they aren't getting anything Trump promised. He is starting his reduction of taxes for the 1%ers, health care will get worse, etc. so in 2 years people will have the chance to change the congress. If they don't, that is there problem.
Americans can do what millions of others have done when they lived in countries they didn't like, immigrate.
Let's get that Canada-US border wall up fast.

I was reading an article in the Intercept about Mike Pompeo being appointed as CIA Director and there was a reference to him giving a speak at an evangelical church in his district that specializes in addressing “Satanism and paranormal activity” I followed the link (see below) to the Summit Church Kansas “The Summit Paranormal Team” page. The opening paragraph went
Paranormal activity is real, and we are here for you! The team is led by Terry Fox. He is very qualified to help you with paranormal activity. and my first thought was “I bet he is, he's dead”.

Thank you Simon. You give a unique perspective, as always.

hi e.a.f...we don't want them to emigrate, we want them to stay and fight. Trump's incompetence and demographics favour our side. So if he screws up big time, I wouldn't be surprised to see him lose control of Congress in the mid term elections. and if that happens he'll be effectively neutered for the rest of his time in office. Touch wood... ;)
ReplyDeleteWas just reading an article about what Trump did to neighbours of his gold course, in Scotland, who refused to sell their homes to him and the opinion of the former P.M. who dealt with him. as the former P.M. said, Trump made all sorts of promises and didn't keep any. Oh, he built walls around his neighbours' properties so they lost their views and sent them the bill. they threw the bills away. Trump's actions are going to get him in trouble in the U.S.A. once his supporters start complaining about him. He does not take criticism well.
ReplyDeleteFor some, given what Trump can do, the U.S.A. may well be too dangerous for some people to stay. Staying and fighting isn't going to be an option for many. I have no doubt he will go after some. He is very vengeful. If he goes ahead with forcing people to register, if he doesn't like their religion, it is better they leave. Hitler made people register and we know how that turned out.
Could Clinton still become the President?
