The Downfall of DOMA and the Triumph of Love

I've been studiously trying to ignore anything that happens in the United States these days.

Because it's summer, the place is a mad house, and if I need crazy I've got Harper eh?

But I couldn't ignore the screams and the tears of joy of millions of gay Americans and their friends today.

Or the sparkly unicorn of this great victory.

In two rulings considered victories for gay marriage supporters, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled Wednesday that legally married same-sex couples should get the same federal benefits as heterosexual couples and cleared the way for same-sex marriage in California.

Not when so many have had to fight so hard and so long against some of the worst bigots in the world for the right to be equal. Or have their love recognized.

Like Edith Windsor who lived with her partner Thea Spyer for 44 years...

And finally got to marry her six years ago in Toronto. Only to be treated when Spyer died as if she wasn't her spouse, and they weren't a real couple.

Edith Windsor, 83-years-old, who reacted like this today when told she had won.

And when asked what Thea might have said replied: "You did it honey."

How can one not be moved by that?

Or by what Kris Perry, one of the plaintiffs in the Proposition 8 case, had to say about what the victory meant to her and her family...

“We believed from the very beginning that the importance of this case was to send a message to the children of this country that you are just as good as everybody else, no matter who you love, no matter who your parents love,” Perry said. “And today we can go back to California, and say to our own children, all four of our boys, your family is just as good as everybody’s else’s family, we love you as much as anybody else’s parents love their kids, and we are going to be equal.”

Or all the tens of thousands of other children being raised by same-sex couples. And who were also the victims of the foul Defence of Marriage Act.

Of course the crazy bigots are coming out of the woodwork foaming with hate. Claiming it means the end of traditional marriage, and even the End of America.

When those of us who live in Canada know that's bullshit.

Or just a joke...

Same-sex marriage doesn't threaten ANYBODY. Vic Toews claimed it would lead to polygamy. But as it turned out only for him eh?

And gay people who choose to get married are strengthening the institution of marriage not destroying it.

And what more can I say except that the struggle will continue until those filthy bigots finally get it.

Love is LOVE...

And they will NEVER defeat it.

It's just too powerful.

And as I always say eh?

It's for EVERYBODY...

That's nice. Love? You are so full hate Simon, how could anyone love you. How could you love yourself?

Love in you is dead, your hate has killed it.

  2. hi anonycon...I'm full of hate? Tell me, do you look at life through a mirror backwards. Or do you stand on your head, declare UP is Down, and clap your feet like a seal? And why are you so interested in my fabulous love life? Get a grip on yourself...er..or whatever. Try laughing your way through life like I do, instead of drinking yourself bitter. I realize it must be horrible to see your boyfiend Harper going all limp on you, but you'll get another...

    Hi Simon
Thanks for the lovely article on this wonderful occasion for our US friends and for everyone who believes in equality. Saddened to see that the first comment on your blog came from a bigot.

    1. hi Cathy...thank you I'm glad you liked it. As I said in the post I'm also scared to look at what's happening in the U.S., so I was glad to see our good neighbours celebrating something good for a change. As for the bigot, I have to put up with a lot of them, but they don't bother me in the least. Most of the time I just feel sorry for them, for they are so miserable, and I'm so happy.
      Hope you're having a great holiday !!!
