Stephen Harper and the Horse Whisperer
He is angry, he is desperate, his whole world is collapsing around him under the weight of scandal.
The Duffy problem just keeps getting worse.
Making it almost impossible to claim that he didn't know what was going on.
His shell shocked caucus is revolting. Demanding that he do something, anything, to make this nightmare go away.
But at least now he has his boy wonder running him AND the PMO.
His faithful Ray Novak
His little Reform Robin...
The Chosen One. The one in his small inner circle of single white men, who knows his darkness better than ANYONE.
“If you were building a perfect political aide, you would end up with Ray Novak,” says Jim Armour, a former Harper aide himself. “He’s perhaps a perfect combination of trusted loyalist, strategist, interpreter, and maybe even horse whisperer.”
“Ray is effectively the Prime Minister’s closest confidant,” enthuses one government official. “Not only as a member of his staff, but as a personal and intimate member of the Prime Minister’s life.”
“Ray was with him more than anybody else for years and years and years,” says Brodie, who served as Harper’s chief of staff for three years. “They were literally hardly ever apart.”
But even though Novak has been whispering into Harper's ears for years, most Canadians have never heard of him. And even more strangely there are almost no pictures of him and Harper together.
The only one I could find was this one...
Where he is playing stick boy for Big Daddy at a roadside photo-op.
But of course he is much more than that eh? Because if he pleases Harper, by stroking his ego or calming his fevers, Great Leader tries to please him as well.
Indulging his wonder boy's monarchist craze, by ordering the word "Royal" to be slapped on as many things as possible. And turning us into a colony again.
Or assaulting the E.I. program to tickle his hardcore Reform Party tendencies.
From the Herald archives… Harper’s new chief of staff, as a University of Calgary student in 2001, decrying the prospect of a merger between the Progressive Conservatives and Canadian Alliance.
Among the reasons: PCs support more generous Employment Insurance reforms, while the Alliance “labelled EI premiums as a damaging tax on jobs that should be scaled back in favour of tax cuts to spur growth.”
Because not only does the young old Reformer hate the very idea of employment insurance, or Red Tories as much as the Liberals.
He also has some extreme views on medicare.
Novak said his vision of Canada included a government with less control over health care. "Every person would have a portion of their taxes put into a savings account," Novak told The Gauntlet, a student newspaper at the University of Calgary. Canadian citizens would then be able to pay for their own health care, with the government footing the bill for "catastrophes" such as heart attacks, he said.
Where if you have a heart attack and you recover. You have another heart attack waiting for the government to pay for your stay in a private clinic.
Which borders on insanity eh?
And now that Harper has given his boy wonder new powers, who knows where the dynamic duo might take us?
What will Robin whisper into Great Batty Leader's hairy ear next?
Or vice versa...
And the good news?
Together they should make the Cons look more like the Reform Party, and make it easier to defeat them in the next election.
Yup. Harper is desperate, Novak is out of his depth. The last thing the old Cons in the caucus want is another so-called PMO boy in short trousers bossing them around.
It'll drive them WILD.
And it's all just another sign of the slow collapse of the Con regime.
The Puffster is the Penguin. Or the Joker.
And to know them is to defeat them...

Don't be lulled into a false sense of security, Simon. ray novak is to harper what karl rove was to little bush. harper has brought the secret weapon out of the closet at last. Now you will see just how despicable politics is really run. Sociopaths and psychopaths will only trust their own. We, those of us who still cling to the desperate illusion that we are living in a Democracy, are in for the rudest awakening of our lives. You don't think that we are seeing the beginning of the beginning of the version of Canada that we, as normal and relatively sane citizens, have been terrified to witness the conception of? harper brought this guy out now because novak will use any and all means at his disposal to crush any and all opposition to harper's criminal cabal. harper's little soiree today will allow no questions from anybody not clearly on his side. That's just the beginning!!! I'll bet you lunch I'm right. I watched the same machinations in the u.s. when stuff like this happened and NOBODY that was the offending party ever got prosecuted. They still aren't being brought up on charges for crimes against humanity, at least not in any country that matters to them. More will be revealed . . .
ReplyDeletehi anonymous 9:29...Don't worry I won't be lulled into a false sense of security. Are you kidding? Writing a blog like this one in a place like Harperland? ;)
DeleteBut Novak is no Rove. He's not an organizing genius. He's more of a peacemaker than anything else, a pacifier with two legs. A detail guy yes, but no visionary. My prediction is he will get caught between Harper and the restive caucus and burn out in six months. But are the Cons dangerous? Absolutely, and we can't defeat them soon enough...
Simon, no offense, but it is past time we all stopped pretending not to be aware that the bulbous one has surrounded himself with an entourage of gay men.
ReplyDeleteHe has Baird and Kenny barring the front gate while Polivierre and Alexander wait their turn after wright and Novak withdraw.
I am concerned that his predilections have interfered too much with his obligations to his other masters and it is time for him to exit stage left.
hi anonymous 12:45... If I knew that he had a gay entourage I wouldn't keep quiet about it. On the contrary I would regard Harper's inner circle with even more contempt than I do now. For I could never understand why a gay person would vote for them, let alone work for them. But of that inner circle of bachelors, Kenney, Baird, Moore, Novac, and until recently Wright, the only one I know to be gay is Baird. However, as I tried to suggest in my post, one way or the other, it's a pretty weird little group, and it does say something about Harper...
DeleteChristopher Alexander is another bachelor
DeleteIf Harper is surrounding himself with trusted Reform loyalists hostile to the merger with Progressive Conservatives, it suggests the ideological cleansing was not as thorough as planned, that Harper distrusts his own caucus, and that Ministers such as Moore, who defend not only the hobbled CBC, but moreover the hated French language Radio-Canada, are to be watched carefully for any signs of disloyalty.
ReplyDeletehi Rene...I seems clear to me that beneath the still waters of the Con Black Lagoon, leadership campaigns are stirring. Kenney, Poilievre, etc. And in that regard this appointment could be seen as a way to bolster the Reformers in the caucus. But as I said in the post, I think it's just a desperation move. Great Leader feels betrayed, and the only one he trusts is his faithful Robin...
DeleteAnd this isn't even the half of it. Not only is a PMO Chief of Staff secretly paying off a debt to evade an audit completely violate the terms of the Parliament Act on a number of levesl etc., it is also completely illegal. Same goes for the Cons appointnebts of unqualified hacks to tribunals who then turn around and abuse their positions by contributing money to Harper's shady Cons. That is also illegal. Call the cops. Bring in the RCMP. Open the doors to HarperLand's shiny new prisons and fill them with a parade of crooked Con hustlers, schemers, crooks liars and thieves. Put one of Tony's Gazebos in the courtyard perhaps for them to gather round during outside time.
ReplyDeletehi wazz...I hope the RCMP does get involved, but I'm afraid I'm not optimistic. Not when Vic Toews is their boss, and officers are being muzzled to please the Cons. But yes it would only be fitting if they ended up in their own shiny jails. And I would really love to see the Harper gang building gazebos, and picnic benches, in the prison work shop... :)
DeleteSo what's next in the way of Harper comedy routines, Simon, some takeoff on the tale of Ming the Merciless blaming his misfortunes and failures on the incompetence of his minions, or perhaps the Star Trek Dr. Chaotica version, with that cheesy robot handling Harper's election campaign.
ReplyDeletehi Rene...Stephen Harper as Ming the Merciless, or Mung the Mirthless, with Ottawa doubling as Mingo City? Hmmmm...you know I just might go for it. But only if I can be Flash Gordon and the Hawkman army is on my side... ;)
DeleteSimon, as always you accurately portray the dismal reality of harper and the reformers who are systematically dismantling our precious Canada. But do you think
ReplyDeleteNovak could just be one creep too many? This guy is sinister, a psycho like harper. Maybe some of decent cons will finally cross the floor.
hi anonymous 11:29... although I am a bit concerned that the power could go to his head, and that he could help nudge the Cons even further to the right, Novak is just Harper's Teddy Bear. And since he is feeling betrayed, like most dictators always do, the only one he really trusts is Novak, and he is just clutching him even closer...
DeleteI have it on good authority that Harper is on the down low. In fact I'm told he does it bareback!
ReplyDeletePerhaps it has been said on this site before, but let's join the dots on the Duffy matter to the overall notion that Harp's inner circle is almost all gay, and then the furious attempts at coverup becomes pretty clear. When the party backed off paying his debt, he threatened to out the whole gang including Harper if they didn't pay up. What else better explains Wright's quick cheque? And oh yes, they believed Duff because he has been squirling away such interesting audio, video and print proofs for a very long time. And those innocent enough to wonder why gays would work on the neo-con agenda, Do not forget the Log Cabin Republicans, gays with very strong conservative views in a party that otherwise hates them.
