Obama and the Shrinking of Stephen Harper

What a fairy tale day it was. What an awesome spectacle of democracy. What a great day to be a progressive.

A black President on Martin Luther King Day standing up for freedom, justice, and equality.

A solemn President Barack Obama took the oath of office for the second time in as many days on Monday, this time before an estimated 800,000 jubilant citizens who cheered on his appeal for Americans to come together and fight for cherished U.S. principles of justice and equality.

Remembering the heroes of the Civil Rights struggle like the Tuskegee Airmen who battled bigotry to fight the Nazis. Speaking out for climate change, gun control, and the rights of women, and gay people.

“Our journey is not complete until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like anyone else under the law — for if we are truly created equal, then surely the love we commit to one another must be equal as well.”

I can't remember the last time I was as moved by a politician as I was today. But sadly it also reminded me of how far we have fallen, and how small is our own leader.

The ghastly Con whose very first act when he came to power was to attack the equality of women.

The sleazy demagogue who told this crowd of disgusting bigots that gays and lesbians weren't  "real Canadians."

The ReformCon who has voted against every gay rights bill ever brought before Parliament. The Prime Minister who forced a second vote on gay marriage. The political thug who instructed his caucus to oppose an anti-bullying bill because his rabid base was afraid it would protect gay children.

And is now instructing his Con thugs to try to bully the media.

The Harper bully brigade is at it again and this time the stakes have been raised: a direct attack on the free press. The prime minister’s office released a statement singling out Postmedia’s Stephen Maher for the high crime of pursuing a news story.

Or smear them.

A letter from Environment Minister Peter Kent to editors at Postmedia in January called one of the news chain’s reporters an environmental activist.

Like he smears ALL his opponents, or tries to muzzle anyone who opposes his Big Oil agenda, or his criminal assault on the environment.

The hideous coward who would seek to humiliate a humble First Nations chief, and fail to condemn the hideous tsunami of racism his attempts to smear her have unleashed.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper is fostering hatred of aboriginals across the country by failing to condemn racist reactions to the Idle No More movement, says a women’s group.

A Prime Minister who doesn't have time for a noble gesture, that could save a life. But does have time to meet with the winners of a Quebec dating show.

I mean really, how low can you go? How low have we fallen?

And how small is Stephen Harper compared to Obama?

Answer: very, very, very, small...

An incredibly shrinking leader totally devoid of class. A grubby Con who shames us all.

And the good news? I have a feeling Obama is going to put Harper in his place. Make life as hard as he can for him. I think his bold new agenda is going to make Harper's reactionary agenda suffer by comparison, and shrink the little oil pimp even further.

Yup. Barack Obama may not be perfect, but compared to our shabby little man he's an absolute giant.

History will be kind to him.

And reserve a special place for Stephen Harper...

I agree with everything you say about Harper, and then some, and it was good that Obama supports the equality of all people in his country regardless of sexual orientation, but he's not exactly a hero in my books...how many innocents are bombed in his drone campaigns? How many people are still locked up without justification in his name ( the name of his country) because he has failed to act on his promises in the past four years?
As the anarchists used to say, talk-action=zero...I'm happy that he thinks his accomplishments so far have been good, and they have, but much more needs to be done...like reigning those revisionists in other States than the East or West Coast ones, who would, like Harper, set the clock back a hundred years...
Obama is simply the devil we know, and if 'god' is in the details, Obama needs to do a lot of repenting and and working to clean up the 'loose ends' from his last term....
Harper is a maggot, and with any justice, will be a one-term destruction machine...

  2. hi lefty...I hear what you're saying. And I agree that his drone campaign and other things he has done in the Great War on Terror should be condemned. But he is the first black President, nobody has ever been attacked by crazed right-wingers as much as he has, and what with the catastrophic financial situation much of his first term has been spent just trying to tread water. And remember it is Amerika, others would be worse, and I'm hoping that now that he doesn't have to worry about being re-elected, his second term will be more progressive...
