The Con Teabaggers and the Youth Vote

Oh boy. I know I shouldn't gloat about what happened to Mitt Romney and his Teabaggers, who were soooooooo sure they were going to win, they are now in a
state of shock and awe.

Or in the sixth stage of the five stages of grief, and in terrible, terrible pain.

My noble companion Sébastien says gloating is like kicking a bully in the head after knocking him out. And of course he's right eh? I don't do that anymore.

But it's sooooooooo hard !!!!

Especially since I feel a bit like Andrew Sullivan did on election night, watching the Con klowns at Fox News.

Yes, I watched for Schadenfreude purposes. These charlatans and money-grubbers have turned the broad tradition of Anglo-American conservatism into Southern Fried Fanaticism - and I wanted to see them crackle in their batter. They have replaced empirical doubt with unerring faith in an ideology that had its moment over thirty years ago and is barely relevant to the world we now live in.

That faith has been cynically fused with fundamentalist religion to make it virtually impossible for the GOP to accept that women are the majority of voters in this country, that gay couples are equal to straight ones, that 11 million illegal immigrants simply cannot be expected to "self-deport" en masse by a regime of terrifying policing, that war is a last and not a first resort, that the debt we have is primarily a function of two things: George W. Bush's presidency and the economic collapse his term ended with.

Still, I guess I can control my enthusiasm until the Republicans start tearing themselves apart, because that'll be better than cage fighting eh?

And besides I'd rather gloat about something else.

How about that youth vote?

Mitt Romney lost the youth vote by a huge margin, and with it, he lost the presidency.

An analysis by the Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement (CIRCLE) at Tufts University found that had the youth vote been split 50-50 for the presidential race in just four states -- Florida, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Virginia -- Romney would have been elected president.

The pundits said there was an enthusiasm gap, they said Obama-mania was over. But when the time came the young were there for him, not just by turning out to vote in record numbers, despite Republican attempts to disenfranchise them.

But also by helping to get out the vote, and at Obama headquarters in Chicago, running the most sophisticated campaign the world has ever seen. So I'm not surprised that when Obama dropped in to say thank you, he got a bit emotional.

For they WERE awesome...

And the best news? So are the young people of Canada. For they will learn the lessons of the Obama campaign.

They already know how to build a massive progressive coalition where young and old work together They have already helped topple one government...

And when the next election arrives they will help drive the Cons from power, and teach them a lesson they will never forget.

For if the loser Mitt Romney is singing the times are a changing, and everything must go.

We're singing the times are a changing, and Stephen Harper has gotta go...
