hi mizdarlin...I can see some value in protests like this one. It brings together progressive people, it gets mentioned in the MSM so other Canadians can become informed about what is at stake. But I just think that we're going to have to kick it up a notch or two if we are going to put some real pressure on the Cons. And of course, I prefer noise to silence... ;)
I've signed a dozen petitions in the past year and can see no discernible difference in the style of dictatorship. I think that only the sight of citizens in the streets will influence these people.
hi anonymous...I'm afraid I agree with you. Petitioning the Cons is like talking to a wall. It may make you feel good but it won't change anything. And it won't reach the politically disengaged, who are the ones we need to win. In Quebec the street protests may encourage some and irritate others, but at least now everybody is more aware about the issues involved than they were before the protests started. And I hope that the same thing will happen in the rest of Canada...
Absolutely- and Quebec has given all of us a lesson in civic engagement..but unlike the US, the people here aren't hungry enough yet..seems like they are asleep when it comes to all the scary stuff the CRAPs are trying to push through..and without some pushback, they will succeed in turning Canada into a police state..
hi Lorne...I'm sure I annoyed some progressives by qualifying my support for this protest. But I have to be honest. All protests against the ghastly Con regime are welcome, but we really need to get off our asses and make sure the Cons and other Canadians get the message clearly and LOUDLY...
Canadians should get off their rears, and demonstrate against this fascist government. Take a page from Quebec and stand up. There is no room for complacency.
hi Yvonne...I agree with you completely, there can be no more excuses. Now that we know what the Cons are planning to do to Canada, we have to do whatever we can to try to block their ghastly agenda, and above all do whatever we can to defeat them in the next election. Success in one, will lead to success in the other...
Much like the Occupy Movement, it seems this protest is encompassing many themes. Perhaps too many. And their original message will get lost as the news focuses on the size of the crowds and clashes with police.
hi Way Way Up...you're right it has a lot of themes, but that's only because the Harperites packed what was supposed to be a budget bill with so many other things. What needs to be done is boil it all down into a simple message that is easy to grasp. If you have that simple message, and you can mount massive peaceful demonstrations to get it across to more Canadians, if the police crack down on protesters that message will only be amplified...
And this gives the Cons immense satisfaction..it means no one is getting the word out..what is the point? It's like being a CRAP doormat..no thanks!
