Stephen Harper and the Hour of Darkness

Well he said he wanted to change Canada beyond recognition, so I suppose nobody should be surprised.

Except he said that long ago, and during the last election campaign he posed as a moderate, so this is outrageous.

How dare that twisted little man interpret his mini-majority as a mandate to take Canada where most Canadians don't want to go?

How dare he drag us into a dark neo-con jungle, where Big Oil rules, the rich get richer, the poor get poorer, the young and the old are screwed. And anyone who opposes his reactionary views is labelled an Enemy of the State.

I could go on, but what's the point eh? I think I can safely say that I have done more than most to warn people where that monster might take them. If some Canadians still don't believe that the Harper Cons are the worst and most dangerous government in this country's history, NOTHING will ever convince them.

And the only thing worth discussing now, is how can we derail their fascist agenda, and how can we defeat them? For we must do both if this country is going to survive.

I'd like to think that the internet could play a leading role in mobilizing the resistance. But experience tells me it can't do that. It's too fragmented, too partisan, too distracted, and on most days too American. It can't lead, it can only follow.

So those who must lead are the ones we elected to do that job. And in this hour of darkness I call on the progressive parties to put aside their petty partisan differences, stop playing old politics, unite in a grand Coalition of National Salvation, and mobilize the population in a massive campaign of peaceful protest and civil disobedience.

For nothing less will stop those foul Cons, or prepare us better for the next election. Which we absolutely must win, or watch our beautiful country slowly bleed to death.

As Susan Riley writes in the Ottawa Citizen today we really have no other choice.

The alternative - waiting four more years for Conservatives to self-destruct - isn't a strategy. It's a confession of impotence.

And that's it eh? After all these lonely years of crying wolf, that's all I have to say.

Except now more than ever. If you love this country.

Fight them, fight them, fight them.

Don't let them win...

  2. I am beyond anger now, Simon; I have a very real, deep, and visceral hatred for Stephen Fucking Harper and anyone associated with him. he wants to call anyone who dares raise their voice in disagreement with him an "Enemy of the State"? Fine. Have at it, asshole, because it runs both ways, you pestilential sack of fascist filth. Some seventy years ago my father, uncles, aunts, cousins and their neighbours and friends fought against people like you and now it's our turn to take up the cause. Revolution, NOW!!!

  3. I don't recall the site, but just yesterday I saw a graphic (white lettering on a black background) that said "ENEMY OF THE STATE".

Someone commented that it should be on t-shirts. :)

  4. It's not hard to see if you look... he's importing the worst from the US and leading us away from the Canada so many of us grew up proud of.

Things will get a lot worse in this country before our complacent, spineless population realizes what's really happening to them.

Given how people tend to shrug off any topic of actual importance so they can think instead about the latest frivolity promoted by our worthless, bought out media, most of us probably have it coming.

It is not enough to rant and rave. We need to make our voices heard be it via the internet, letters to the editor, or attending political meetings. We need to be involved and we need to get out and vote next time. How many people who complain about Harper & Co. got out and voted last time?

Here in B.C. we have the Harper clone, Christie Clarke and she loves to hire those who worked for Harper. They both would like to see a pipeline through out north, oil tankers on our coast; and coal mines on Vancouver Island.

We now know harper will gut the enviornmental review system. He went to Europe to announce his wanting to raise the CPP age to 67.

There is no need for that. All the Candian government needs to do is have corporations pay their fair share of taxes.

The Canadian $ is now being held at an artifically high value because we are an oil producing nation. This will only lead to more unemployment as our manufacturing sector finds they aren't able to export their goods.

Harper's views of Canada will leave us with polluted water, oil spills in the north and on the B.C. coast, with reduced medical services for an aging population which will have to work longer to receive a pension.

WE have an RCMP which has over 100 women filing harassment suits.

We have a water problem on Reserves of First Nations and children living in toxic enviornments.

This is not the Canada I grew up in and I want my Canada back.

  8. hi ThinkingManNeil...I know how you feel. I know both of us never trusted the man, and I suppose we shouldn't be surprised. But somehow I still am. I still have trouble believing this is happening in Canada. And that the Cons could interpret their mini-majority as giving them the power to completely ignore the opposition, and do what they want. The only good news is that by acting like this maybe the bovine masses who voted for them will get the shock of their lives, and not do that again. Of course, for that to lead to victory, progressives would also have to unite. And that will no doubt prove even harder than the first thing. But the Cons are creating the conditions for a revolution, so I console myself with that...

  9. hi sassy...I like the idea a lot. "I'm an Enemy of the State" on the front and "Screw Harper" on the back... ;)

  10. hi C2...I'm afraid I don't have much to brag about, but one thing I'm very proud of is that never ever ever have I considered Stephen Harper's Cons to be a Canadian party. They introduced American style attack ads and wedge issues, they set up a war room Karl Rove would be proud of, but simply calling them Amerikans doesn't do them justice. I consider them an alien life form, that sprung from the belly of a bitter twisted man, and is now eating this country alive...

  11. hi e.a.f...I couldn't agree with you more, we really don't have to expend any more energy declaring that Harper is deranged and his government is the worst government in Canadian history. It seems to me that has been proved over and over again beyond the shadow of any doubt. What I want to see now are smart and creative ideas about how we can derail the Harper Con agenda, and eventually defeat them. As I said in this post, I have come to the conclusion that it's up to the progressive parties in this country to mobilize the population, instead of just playing the same strictly parliamentary game, which at this point is simply repeating the same mistakes over and over again, only to end up with the same result. You know, the very definition of insanity. Because of the enemy we are facing, it has to be a larger struggle if we are ever going to win...

  12. hi anonymous...I'm afraid you're right, it will probably have to get a lot worse before the bovine masses in this country finally figure out what's happening. Their selfishness and plain old greed, combined with the inability of our pathetic corporate media to see the forest for the trees, is entirely responsible for the mess we are in. A country that can't reinvent itself, is a country doomed to fail...
