The Cons and the NDP Go After Sophie Trudeau

Well I suppose it was inevitable, she's young, she's smart, she's Justin Trudeau's princess.

So first the Cons went after Justin, then they went after their children, then they went after Margaret Trudeau.

And now they're going after Sophie.

For having the honesty and the courage to admit that she needs help to cope with all the requests for her time.

Sophie GrĂ©goire-Trudeau's claim that she's overwhelmed and needs more staff to cope with the mountain of requests for her time has ignited a debate about the role of a prime minister's spouse.

She said she gets numerous letters from people asking her to help with various projects and charities and is forced to make difficult choices about who she can help based on the resources she has.

And of course leading the charge again, was the ghastly Con Candice Bergen...

"It really is the hypocrisy of Mr. Trudeau at this point always wanting more, always wanting more to do self-promotion, to do vanity trips, to do the things that he likes to do," Bergen said. "I think that's where the challenge is and where a lot of Canadians would question more."

Who sniffs for Trudeau blood, like a hog sniffs for truffles.

And was supported on this occasion by the NDP's Nicki Ashton.

"The kind of statements we heard from the prime minister's wife, you know, speak to that disconnect with the reality that Canadian women face," said NDP MP Niki Ashton. "So if we're going … to talk about women feeling overwhelmed, let's talk about everyday Canadian women feeling overwhelmed," she added.

Who you might think was a feminist, but clearly isn't.

And is only demonstrating again how low the NDP has fallen. And why I should never vote for them again as I did in the last election.

And look isn't this cute? They set up a whole twitter site.

So they could bully Sophie further.

And what strikes me as totally outrageous is the hypocrisy of the Cons. Who keep claiming that if Laureen Harper had only one assistant, so should Sophie.

Even though Laureen did almost nothing for anyone, except take care of Stephen Harper...

And when a young activist interrupted her at one of her cat functions, to ask her to help with the case of the murdered and missing aboriginal women.

Did react like this...

Because she was a real people person. When she wasn't living simply at the Chateau Laurier.

And while we're at it, let's not forget Mila Mulroney who had a small army of helpers at her disposal.

Much debate has taken place over whether taxpayers should be paying for her suite of four offices on Parliament Hill, equipped with a staff of three, since the first lady position in Canada isn't as formal as it has become in the U.S.

But then what's really bothering the Cons is that Sophie's husband is so popular, while Rona Ambrose's popularity couldn't be worse.

So they're absolutely desperate.

Sophie Trudeau will have to learn to say no to all the requests she receives.

But yes, as I have said before, Trudeau hate in this country is becoming a disease.

There are a lot of sick people out there. It's getting creepy. The Cons are attacking Trudeau's mother, they're attacking his children, they're attacking his wife. And of course they're attacking him, and flooding the internet with vile insults and death threats.

They're creating an atmosphere of hate, and clearly hoping to encourage somebody to attack him or kill him.

And all I can say to those sicko Con bullies, is show some decency you animals.

And keep your filthy paws off Sophie Trudeau...

I'm beginning to be really ashamed of the NDP. They are acting like conservative picking at every little thing. Sophie is attempting to be a role model for young women and girls and good for her. I don't expect the NDP to pick and criticize the good things the liberals do for Canadians. I've never voted for anyone else but I will if they keep it up.

Good morning Simon, your caption of Candice Bergen is dead on!!!!! What a CON, morally depleted, ignorant Hog she is, and will always be. Such a slimy snake like person.

I don't think Prime Minister's wives or husbands should any government funded assistants at all, period.

No buddy elected Lauran Harper or Sophie Trudeau to anything.

And I don't support going after politicians spouses or childern or families, with 2 exceptions, they're elected officials like Trudeau's Father, or they over step their bounds in the political sphere like Sophie Trudeau has (even then it should be a proportional response, and not go beyond the political infraction).

So it should go no farther then it has, but the NDP and Tories are well within their rights to say no to Sophie getting more or any assistants for being a PMs wife.

hi anon...well I don't like criticizing the NDP, and I'll probably forgive them after a week or two. But I must say I was disappointed to see Nicki Ashton attack Sophie Trudeau, for no good reason. And when I heard Nathan Cullen suggest that we might need a referendum, my hair stood on end. And to make matters worse, the dreadful Con HQ twitter site is publishing NDP graphics, and saying how much they agree with them. I have a simple rule of thumb; if the Cons are in favour of something, I'm against it...

hi anon...thanks I'm glad you liked it. I've been using Miss Piggy to represent Bergen, but Piggy's many fans were complaining, and quite rightly. So I thought I better use the real Bergen, and when I have some time I'll try to come up with one that really does her justice... :)

Yes the NDP should work with Trudeau to achieve some kind of compromise on electoral reform. So far all they've done is play politics and level absurd accusations against Trudeau.

It's not surprising the Liberals did not relinquish control over the electoral reform committee given the way the NDP has been acting. They want to get something accomplished, not waste everyone's time.

Sophie is a role model for all. She lives her life with balance and grace, as shown by the fact that she has spoken up on the difficulty she is having in meeting the demands on her time. Laureen Harper, by all appearances was having difficulty in her role as PM's wife. Although more intraverted, she did go through a bad patch.

Too bad there are people who are buying into this crap.

I remember when Mila Mulroney.....and Canadian taxpayers did pay for her fun times....

I don't see how Sophie Grégoire is a role model - there is no such thing as a "First Lady" (or Gentleman) in a parliamentary government. She has no government role. Is she really only using her husband's last name now?

I'm not opposed to paying for nannies in this very particular case, for one reason - security. I don't see how the children could be in a public daycare, which should be the norm. But she is not an elected or appointed official.

Simon, I agree with Nicky Ashton. Her reasons to objecting to the funding have zilch to do with those of the Cons. And she is a hell of a lot more feminist than Sophie is likely to ever be. If you prefer to vote for a bourgeois-liberal party, that is your call and your care.

I don't hate Trudeau, he is a pleasant enough person (I've met him several times at community functions here, but wouldn't claim to "know" him) and I most certainly don't wish any ill to him or to anyone in his family whether Trudeaus, Sinclairs or Grégoires. But I am VERY critical of the PM's office resembling a presidency, or the very idea of a "First Lady", which is one of the most retrograde current representations of womankind in industrial societies. Look at Michelle Obama, a highly-accomplished lawyer who had to become sort of a glorified housewife. It is NOT something to be encouraged.

No need to publish this post, Simon, but I'm getting "Link not recognized" when I try to recommend it to Progressive Bloggers. Just so you know.

Simon said...

hi ninente...Thanks for letting me know. I replaced the link so hopefully it will work now. Blogger is in the midst of switching from and HTTP to an HTTPS coding which is supposed to be more secure. It's possible that there is a mixed content problem where both systems are coexisting or fighting each other. I'm going to adjust the settings, so hopefully the problem won't happen again. If however, nobody can vote for me again, you'll know that I don't know what I'm doing.... ;)

Nathan calling for a referendum , Nicki Ashton slamming Sophie, siding with the Con's is the final straw. I'm coming out today......as a Liberal. Goodbye NDP. I had already decided but this cements it. Great pic of the Ghastly Candace. Pamela, Proud Liberal.

Love me, I'm a Liberal, as the late Phil Ochs sang?

lagatta à montréal said...

There is no Sophie Trudeau. Under Québec law, she is Sophie Grégoire.

Simon said...

hi Gyor...you may be technically right, but in practice Prime Minister's wives have always played a role. If Mila Mulroney could have three assistants Sophie can have two.

Simon said...

hi TS...yes it is too bad. As a columnist in Maclean's wrote Canadians have a tendency to be cheap and miserly, and it does not make us look good. I never denied Harper the trappings of office, and the Cons should keep their noses out of the trudeau's private arrangements. Sophie can help raise a lot of money for charity, and she represents us well when she goes abroad...

Simon said...

hi lagatta...Sophie is a role model for many young people, she is a nice person, unlike Laureen, and I find the attacks on her and her children and Margaret to be the worst kind of bullying tinged with a heavy dose of misogyny. The Prime Minister's wife should be as active as possible, instead of stating at home like in the bad old days, baking pies or taking care of the children or the cats. And Michelle Obama has not been a glorified housewife. She has fronted many valuable charities and projects for poor kids, and made it more than obvious that she doesn't shuffle obediently after her husband. Of course the best part will come when we finally get a woman president, and then let's see how the critics react...

hi anon...yes I saw that, and actually thought of running the Harris story myself. The reason I didn't is because I find Harris just a bit too generous with Mike Duffy, who might have been cleared of the charges against him, but who acted in a manner that in my opinion at least was ethically dubious...

Simon said...

hi anon..yes I'm a bit disappointed. I realize the NDP want try to improve their dismal standings in the poll by attacking the Liberals, and that's fine. By joining the Cons in their cheap assault on Sophie Trudeau, or threatening to join them in calling for a referendum is not right in my book. In fact to make matters worse the Cons are even retweeting some NDP propaganda to show they agree with them on some things. And any party that gets too close to the Cons is not one I can support....

Simon said...

hi lagatta...what? You don't like that song either? ;)

lagatta à montréal said...

I love that song, (except that in one version I heard on youtube, Ochs made a lesbophobic slure DAR (a rightwing women's group) = Dykes of the American Revolution.) Just a stupid joke he made, but I didn't want to post it.

I do NOT like the Liberal Party. Of course I don't feel the deep and utter hatred I feel for Harper's crew of thugs and bigots, but I remember the War Measures Act, and support for C-51.

lagatta à montréal said...

Shouldn't Ms Grégoire have a life of her own? Like the husbands of female PMs, Chancellors and Presidents?

Anonymous said...

In Canada, there is no official role for the spouse of a prime minister. Sophie incorrectly believes she is a first lady, the governor general or a princess. If the selfish and arrogant Mila Mulroney has become a role model for the Liberals, it is another example of how low the Liberals have sunk. Parasites like them and Postmedia are the real welfare queens, living in luxury and still with their greedy hands out.

CBC's Neil Macdonald has a very good piece on Sophie Grégoire Trudeau today. At times we can be such a small infantile people. Grow the fuck up, Canada.

Anonymous said...

Right on Simon....... Sophie is everything that Laureen was not allowed to be!!!!!!! And Sophie also has the advantage of having a Mother in law that has been through it all and came out on top!!!! Surely she is a great sounding board for Sophie. As for Laureen, She was a self absorbed person that did not really present a role model feeling, even to a cat!!!!!!!

I find our neighbours to the south rather more infantile with their worship of wealth and celebrity - especially when a demagogue like Trump is the idol they worship.

Macdonald's brown-nosing fluff piece was embarrassingly infantile, and not up to his usual standards. Maybe he's angling for a senate seat.

Simon said...

Hi Omar ....yes I read it, and I thought it was bang on. The tendency of some Canadians to eat their own really is pathetic, and the kind of thing small people do. It explains so many things in Canada, from the obsessive hate for the young Justin Bieber to the same kind of thing aimed at Trudeau....

Simon said...

Hi anon....actually as I just told Omar, I thought Macdonald's piece was really good. I have met Neil, he was in the military, and he's no brown noser. Unlike the Cons who spent almost ten years brown nosing their cowardly twisted little freak of a leader. But thanks, I was debating whether to do a post on his story, and I was feeling a little lazy, but now I will....

Well said. There used to be a big gap between petty and evil,
but right now in Canada there's an element that's rushing to fill it.
