Stephen Harper and the Day of Reckoning

Well I think it's safe to say that Stephen Harper will not be seen anywhere near Parliament Hill today.

And that he will spend yet another day hiding from Canadians.

Because today would not be a very good day to come out of the closet.

For three very good reasons.

Firstly he doesn't want to be around when the Finance Minister starts talking about Canada's downgraded economic outlook.

Finance Minister Bill Morneau is expected to give a better idea today of how much the economic downturn has curbed growth in Canada.

The source says the figures will show a lot has changed since the federal government released similar figures in November and will give Canadians a better idea of the size of the budget deficit.

For it will be a day of reckoning.

And he certainly doesn't want to be asked any embarrassing questions about how his disastrous economic policies have led us to the verge of disaster...

Or asked about the size of his deficit that he claimed was a surplus. As his shameless stooge Rona Ambrose is still doing...

Lest he be accused, again, of being a Con artist himself.

Secondly, now that the Liberals have released a list of the budget cuts he tried to hide.

After the former Conservative government made across-the-board cuts in the 2012 federal budget, the Parliamentary Budget Office complained the government was refusing its request to see details so it could analyze the impact of the cuts on services and programs. Today, the Trudeau government posted the information in an online spreadsheet.

He certainly doesn't want to be asked any questions about the way he hacked his way  through government in his never ending attempt to slowly but surely kill it...

For just a quick glance at that list can only remind Canadians of the monster he was, and the damage he did to Canada.

And what he might have done if he was still in power, and was able to make us keep paying for his mistakes.

And thirdly of course, he doesn't want to be seen on the same day the Duffy trial resumes.

Lest he be dragged into its scary orbit again...

Or be asked questions about his appalling judgement, or the cover-up.

Or the whole Senategate scandal...

For it can only remind Canadians of the sleazy leader he was.

Or wonder when all of the above is considered.

Why he's still at large.

Instead of on trial himself.

Or in prison...

Yup. Stephen Harper, still a coward.

Still hiding from Canadians.

Still trying to save his foul legacy.

From the harsh verdict of history...

and the MSM especially CTV Question period raises no Questions

If Harper had gotten 4 more yrs., we would now be living in a Police State.

Whether he ends up in jail which I doubt he will, it's extremely gratifying to know that he's living like a recluse, too ashamed to show his face or answer questions to the mess he left behind. His inability to "man-up" and take responsibility will be part of his shameful legacy. The scorn that has and will continue to be heaped on this coward will be a jail he will never escape from and I couldn't be happier.

Harper DID show up today in Parliament, but only to vote on the Cons' motion re: Israel.

The Cons are idiots and inept with budgets. History proves this.
They cannot say otherwise.

Simon, isn't it the "day of reckoning" of the Liberal Party? A large majority of them upvoted the shameful Con motion against solidarity with Palestine. For shame. It seems that Elizabeth May has joined in with the NDP and the Bloc against this disgusting repressive motion.

The BDS movement, like Israeli Apartheid Week, has no place on Canadian campuses. As a @McGillU alum, I’m disappointed. #EnoughIsEnough

Disgusting.

No, I am NOT happy for "an opportunity to reveal the true nature of the Liberal Party". I did hope they would produce some positive change. Sadly, nope.

So, you would have preferred another four years of the cons? I agree the libs are not even near perfect, but still a 1,000,000,000,000 times better than the Harpocrites...!!!

I'm a Liberal and I have to say, I totally agree with you. I didn't expect to agree with everything but this truly is disappointing.

One could say this wasn't a great day for Steve, but I'd suggest Steve just doesn't care. As long as he isn't called to duffy's trial, he's home free.

what Steve did may have been unethical, immoral, but not illegal. as P.M. and the Cons as the ruling party they had lots of latitude. Being a lousy P.M. is not illegal.

Poor Rona does look ridiculous and that is most likely why we don't hear or see Steve, he knows how bad it really is.

Of course not. But in this case, it is the Liberals who are hypocrites, not the Cons, who have always been mindless backers of the most reactionary elements in Israel. Perhaps some of you remember the MP Marcel Prudhomme, a Liberal MP for Saint-Denis (which is pretty much the same riding as what is now Papineau), who distinguished himself by his support for the Palestinian cause. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marcel_Prud'homme

I'm as thrilled as anyone to see the back of the Harper régime. Just don't like seeing the Liberals behaving the same. And I'd say the same if Mulcair had voted that way - he is known for keeping his MPs (including mine, Alexandre Boulerice) on a very short leash when it comes to solidarity with the Palestinian people.

hi Steve...I haven't watched CTV's Question Period for a while, but if it's anything like the Con garbage I see on Power and Politics, i'm not surprised if it too is toothless...

hi Pamela...I completely agree with you, and I wish more progressives would remember that, and celebrate our transition to a better and more Canadian government, rather than bitching, in classic Canadian fashion, about how the Trudeau government is perfect. It isn't, but it's a hell of a lot better than what we had before....

Simon said...

hi JD...yes that is a good way to look at it. I am still hopeful that justice will one day catch up to him. But you're right, living life as a fugitive, instead of the beloved Father of the Nation as he had hoped, is a measure of punishment. And I will keep trying, until the day I stop blogging, to do as much damage to his legacy as possible...

Simon said...

hi David...well that figures, he may let down his own constituents, but he could never let down his boyfriend Benny. How simply pathetic...

Simon said...

hi anon...you're quite right. Never has a government spent so much of OUR money to try to convince us that they were great money managers. Only to deliver so little....

Simon said...

hi lagatta...look, my position on the Israeli Palestinian conflict is clear. I support a two-state negotiated solution, I have condemned Israel's occupation and its brutal wars on Gaza. And I welcome all diplomatic pressure that can be brought upon the Netanyahu settler regime to force it to negotiate. But the Con motion was a hollow one, and it's completely unrealistic to believe that a Canadian government would join the BDS movement. It''s just not going to happen. The Cons knew that and it's only a cheap move designed to embarrass the government and divide progressives. And I should add it does not stop any Canadian from joining in a boycott and refusing to buy Israeli goods. So it will not affect the way I feel about the Trudeau government. I am an idealist, but like my people in the highlands I have both feet on the ground. So I do not demand what cannot or will not be done, and I'm not disappointed when it isn't. I would also point out that Trudeau did not whip the vote, and that about a dozen Liberal MPs didn't support the motion. So that is something. And I'm afraid that some progressives who are up in arms about this, are just looking to attack the Liberals for partisan reasons...

Simon said...

hi sez you...I understand where you are coming from, but I would say the same to you as I said to lagatta. We live in an imperfect world, or a highly political one. And one disappointment should not cloud all the other achievements of the Trudeau government. It was a hollow motion, and anyone who wishes to join the boycott of Israeli goods is free to do so,,,,

Simon said...

hi e.a.f...maybe you're right, but it still offends me to see an MP collect his pay, and fail to appear in Parliament except when it's voting on matters Harper deems important. And as for the Duffy case, if Harper did lie about a cover-up he did do something illegal and he should have been punished...

David said...

That's what I thought too.

David said...

Once the Duffy trial is over, Harper or more likely a pathetic press release, will announce he is resigning as MP and he will go to work for either a right wing think tank or an oil company.

The NDP found it in themselves to vote for it, but the Liberals couldn't? Pathetic.

lagatta à montréal said...

The motion condemns the BDS movement and exposes us to legal and civil action. No BDS supporter expects the Canadian government to support the movement.
