Rona Ambrose's Marijuana Madness and the Stoner Sloth

At first glance they may look like an odd couple. The hairy Rona Ambrose, and the equally hairy sloth from Australia.

But it turns out they are both peddling the same message.

And while until today I thought that Rona's Killer Weed ad was the worst anti-marijuana ad ever made...

You know, the one where that heap of glass tubing is supposed to be your brain after you smoke up.

Or at least the most ridiculous ad campaign since that old classic Reefer Madness...

Now it seems that Reefer Rona has some serious competition.

And is being given a run for her our money, by the Stoner Sloth !!!

The New South Wales government’s “stoner sloth” campaign, intended to warn teenagers of the dangers of sustained marijuana use, has instead driven web traffic to a “cannabis solutions” site.

The campaign shows human-size, anthropomorphic sloths mistaking salad for salt at the dinner table, struggling to opine on pairing socks with sandals at a party, and other relatable examples of the pitfalls of being a teenager high on marijuana, with the tagline “you’re worse on weed”.

Like Ambrose's ad campaign, which had to be withdrawn after Canada's doctors accused her of playing politics with the health of Canadians, the Stoner Sloth campaign also seems to have backfired badly...

The official Stoner Sloth Facebook page, which has attracted nearly 14,000 likes, has been overwhelmed with comments making fun of the campaign or questioning its logic.

“Smoke weed, become one of the most adorable animals in the world. Where do I get some weed?” commented Andrew Watton-Davies.

And is now being widely parodied...

But you know, while Ambrose's "This is Your Brain on Marijuana" ad might not have been THAT funny. How could it be when it made you want to stick a pipe cleaner in your ear?

I still believe it's just as ridiculous. And I still believe that Rona is dumber than the Stoner Sloth.

And here's the proof.

Interim Conservative Leader Rona Ambrose says any plan to sell pot in liquor stores like the LCBO would not guarantee it will be kept out of the hands of children.

"Well, that's not been hugely successful in terms of restricting access for kids. So we'll be watching that. That to me is the No. 1 issue," Ambrose said in a year-end interview with CBC News.

She still thinks that legalizing marijuana will lead to more teenagers smoking it, even though preliminary evidence suggests the opposite is happening.

While it's a politically potent message -- nobody wants to see more kids doing drugs -- there's a substantial body of research showing that teen pot use hasn't risen in the states that have legalized medical marijuana. In 2014, a year when marijuana was all over the news and national attitudes toward the drug are relaxing, teen use actually trended downward.

And even though common sense suggests that restricting its sale to places like liquor stores, will make it harder for kids to buy it rather than easier.

But then of course, Ambrose has no time for science or common sense. She would rather hand the profits to drug dealers instead of the government, spend even more more money on the Great Failed War on Marijuana, and send even more young Canadians to jail.

Like her nutty leader did...

In his desperate attempt to use marijuana as a wedge issue to attack Justin Trudeau.

Which only made Justin even more popular.

Just like Rona's continuing campaign will almost certainly do again.

While the popularity of that Australian ad, can only make even more Canadians wonder who is OUR Stoner Sloth?

And of course give thanks that Rona Ambrose is no longer the Health Minister or the Minister of ANYTHING.

Give thanks that as the leader of the not so new/nouveau Cons, she still doesn't know what she is doing.

And that with a little bit of dumb and a little bit of crazy, she will help lead them ALL to the oblivion they deserve...

What country, century, or even world does this woman live in?

My impression is that anyone could buy marijuana on the street much more easily than buying a bottle of wine in the LCBO and the marijuana dealers don't close for major holidays. It's probably easier than buying a package of cigarettes at the local variety store.

I realise she's playing for the base but even most of the base cannot be that naive.

You're just jealous because nobody nominated you to be in the 2016 fluoxetine calendar this coming year and dumbrose is the poster girl for 3 (count 'em) different months next year.
Eat your heart out... ;-)

legalizing marijuana will be the right way to go. Yes and It will be more difficult for kids to get their hands on it. Thst will leave police time and money to deal with meth and such drugs. Yes we know marijuana isn't great for teenage brains but neither is liquor.

Marijuana ought to be treated like wine, have marijuana farms like we have wineries, etc. It will provide jobs, create taxes, etc.

The trouble with liquor is people can and do get violent on it. Have seen a lot of drunk people beat up on others. Have yet to see someone high on marijuana do the same thing.

Okay, here we go again, hypocrisy at its finest. It was not too long ago that an ambulance had to be called to 24 Sussex because little Harper had a party where alcohol was served to underage children, so much so, that a young lady was needed to be taken to the hospital due to an alcohol overdose. These bastards love to preach that theiy're all about protecting our young, but in reality, they care about nothing about this issue and only care about entitlement and power. If we want to be honest about the problem of drugs in our society, alcohol is as dangerous as any so called illegal drug out there. It is a drug that can take a perfectly sane person and turn them insane in a matter of minutes. Now, I'm not advocating prohibition or do I believe the 'War on Drugs' is anything more than a cash cow for the industrial military police state, but it riles me when these neo-theo-con thugs force their archaic outlook on this subject on others. I like to ask my friends to google the new system (13 years old) that Portugal implimented to counter the problems they were having with heroin addiction. They stopped using the legal system to combat this, and starting using the health system. Addiction and crime rates have dropped drastically. Most crime from this problem arise from the Black market and the gangs that control these markets. If people want to see what happens when you disavow the myth of the benefits of the 'War on Drugs, they need only to look at than the experiment in Portugal and how much better it is than incarcerating and ruining the lives of people over a victimless free choice. It's a health issue, not a criminal one.

Oh yes they can! They still think heil harper and his cabal of criminals is the best thing since the invention of the thumbscrew so what does that tell ya, hmmmmmm?
I would feel a lot more at ease with my kid smoking pot than drinking or smoking cigarettes. ALREADY PROVEN ABOUT A THOUSAND FUCKING TIMES TO BE LESS HARMFUL AND LESS ADDICTIVE (If there is any real addiction factor to weed at all) THAN ALCOHOL AND/OR TOBACCO!!!
Is it just me or does anybody else out there think that ambrose resembles a refugee from The Flintstones?

LCBO stores are excellent for carding. I'm 54, last time I was carded was in my mid 40's. Silly cons...

But on a more serious note, a dear friend of mine has been diagnosed with an extremely painful disease and has been referred to an organization in Montreal that prescribes marijuana for pain. The idea is to use it with opiates to manage debilitating pain. The process of his referral from a pain clinic to this place, and the support of three MDs is quite impressive. There is much to be learned about this drug, both by the scientific community and the general public. Unfortunately, the latter is about 9 years behind the times, and the former are wasting their valuable resources fighting misinformation.

I am not a recreation pot smoker, but I don't judge those who choose it for whatever reason. As our PM has indicated, my only concern is with young people using it since it can cause irreversible neurological damage.

Ignorance is not bliss. I am constantly reminded of how the Neanderthals of the CPC have let Canada down. From tying the price of oil to the Canadian dollar to this....

Thank you Simon, you remind us of how we need to reclaim what is ours.

Keep appeasing the base Rona, then look at what it got you on October 19th.

RoNAH does bear a striking physical and intellectual resemblance to the sloth. Like their Republican cousins once the retro Cons declare war on something they are sure to loose whether it be "War on Drugs..Crime..Terrorism..Climate Change activists..Liberals etc". If I believed in conspiracy theories like their support base I could convince myself that they have an ulterior motive for declaring War on things rather than use a strategic combination of options at their disposal. However, since I am not really into conspiracy theories I have to conclude the root cause of their failed wars is that they are just plain DUMB!

Many of the Cons are far-right Christians and Jews. If they say they believe everything that's in the Bible, ask them:

Why, then would God create the marijuana plant, if it didn't have a purpose?

Genesis 1:29: Then God said, "I give you *every* seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food.

hi jrkrideau...I actually watched her say that on TV. And she paused before she spoke to try to gather her thoughts. But she still came out sounding crazy. I guess she's buried herself up to her waist in that bog, and she can't backdown now. But it doesn't make sense, and why would the government build new buildings to sell marijuana? Eventually they might want to do that, or franchise it, but it seems like a good place to start...

hi TS...I'm sorry to hear about your friend, but I'm glad to hear that he is being treated well in my beloved city. It really is all about basic humanity, and let's never forget that Ambrose went out of her way to try to prevent people in pain from ingesting medical marijuana orally, so her behaviour has been simply unforgivable.
I too want see the drug controlled, and kept out of the hands of as many young people as possible. But it is less dangerous than alcohol and many other drugs, and its controlled sale would ensure that it isn't sprayed with dangerous chemicals, and allow the profits to be used for good purposes,...

hi anon 12:51....you're right. The healthiest thing is not to use drugs at all. But marijuana is a much safer drug than alcohol, and a host of so called party drugs out there. Unlike alcohol it doesn't provoke fights, which is a big thing. So singling marijuana out like Ambrose seems to be doing is absolutely absurd. And the thought that she was a Health Minister, who didn't believe in harm reduction, still horrifies me and always will...

hi anon... Rona is a model, for THREE months, in a calendar? Gawd. I am jealous !!!!!!
And I'll bet Rempel is too. Although the way Rona seems to always dress in black, must make it a VERY gloomy calendar. So unless I can wear a bright red bikini I'm not interested... ;)

hi e.a.f...yes I hope we finally start treating drugs in an adult manner. We do need to control it, and try to keep it out of the hands of the young, and provide more drug education for everybody. But the War on Drugs has been an abject failure, and a massive waste of money, so the sooner we can control it by legalizing it, instead of just making drug dealers rich and jailing more kids, the better ...

hi GreazedLitenen....I remember the incident at 24 Sussex Drive, and have written several posts about it, because binge drinking is a big problem in this country.
And yes, the example of Portugal is a very good one, and the Portuguese have had some very good results. The problem with our approach to drugs is that so much of the discussion is based on emotion rather than common sense. The one and only approach that should guide us is harm reduction. And education should be emphasized rather than punishment....

hi anon...I'm not sure who she is appeasing, since I remember seeing a poll once that showed a big chunk of that base also thought marijuana should be legalized. I think she just adopted Harper's approach, and now that he's gone she's been left holding the bag. And now feels she can't back down. Good, because it is a big generational issue, and if the Cons keep turning off the young, they will have no future...

hi RT... Needless to say I'm happy to welcome the Stoner Sloth to the corner of my archives where RoNAH lives. I was preparing to fit her out in a nice Bat Woman costume, but now that the Sloth has arrived that can wait. As for the War on Marijuana it has a long and interesting history particularly in the United States, where it was used by racists as an excuse to oppress black people. But you're right in Rona's case it seems to come from a very shallow and dumb place...

Hi Simon
Ideally alcohol and marijuana would both be sold to adults in a strictly regulated way, as alcohol and cigarettes are sold. To say one is the lesser of two evils isn't relevant. Both are harmful to kids. Adults can make their own decisions on these matters, kids will need to come of age first. This is a health issue not a moral issue. You are right, legalization will reduce/eliminate presence of added chemicals that may pose their own separate set of risks.
