Donald Trump, Stephen Harper, and the Politics of Hate

I'm sure you know how I feel about Donald Trump. I've called him a fascist buffoon before, and compared his hair to one of the most poisonous caterpillars in America.

But now that so many people all over the world feel the same way, including our new government.

In an unusual move, the Canadian government, which usually refrains from commenting on foreign election campaigns, joined the chorus of those criticising Trump.

“It’s something that we can’t accept in Canada ... We have never been as far removed from what we’ve just heard in the United States,” foreign affairs minister Stephane Dion said.

Some more than others...

I think it's important to point out that sadly Dion is wrong. And that we've never been closer to crazy bigoted America.

For as Thomas Walkom points out, the same malignant disease is poisoning other countries, including Canada.

Canadians seem astonished by the rise of Donald Trump, the front-running contender for America’s Republican presidential nomination. They shouldn’t be. Trump is not just a self-aggrandizing buffoon. He is also a shrewd operator who has tapped into a dark malaise that afflicts much of the Western world — including Canada.

We have our own Trump...

Nor have Canadian politicians been averse to playing the race card when it suited them. The Conservative’s barbaric cultural practices hotline, announced during the last federal election campaign, was one of several desperate attempts by Stephen Harper’s government to hold onto power by pandering to anti-Muslim sentiment.

And the bigot fires he started are still burning.

Innocent Muslims in this country are being insulted, threatened and even attacked in the most cowardly manner.

Bullies and bigots like Ezra Levant are having a field day...

And this comment about Walkom's story speaks for itself.

Trump just got the keys to the White House given to him with his remark about temporarily banning Muslims from America. No country wanted to be the first to ban them but the first one that does, the rest will quickly follow. Citizens will demand it.

The politically correct, media and lifetime politicians just don't understand how massive the backlash is towards radical Islam and their daily atrocities throughout the world. Trump will lead the way to the only solution for the Western world to keep their freedom, culture, beliefs and heritage from those that would take it from us...

For although it's mild compared to others, it too couldn't be more ignorant, or more insane, or more disgusting.

You know it's weird, but some progressives in this country seem to think I should stop blogging about Stephen Harper.

Including Scott Tribe one of the founders of Progressive Bloggers...

I have no idea why Scott feels this way, or why he seems to think that I should forget about Harper so soon. Or as he said in another tweet "stop beating a dead horse."

But although I respect Scott for what he has done, I haven't the slightest intention of doing what he suggests.

At least until Harper resigns his seat, and stops haunting the halls of Parliament like the invisible man.

And influencing the direction of the foul party he created, from the shadows he now inhabits.

For I am sustained by the belief that Harper is a fascist just like Donald Trump...

That he should be held accountable for the ten-year reign of terror he inflicted on this country.

And that we will not be safe or Canada.

Until that monstrous bully goes back to the alien place he came from.

And his foul legacy is dead and buried...

The harper playbook unmasked at last!!!

A MUST READ for anybody who can't figure out what went wrong here...

Unless someone assassinates him, Tump is going to win, and win big. No because of what he says, but because of the fact that he is both beholden to no one, and refuses to be cowed by the media.

American's trust in the MSM remains at historic lows. The only thing missing was a candidate who wouldn't be beholden to them, and that's Donald Trump.

Where the presidency is almost always bought and sold by large corporate donors, he who can operate without a pupper-master is a significant threat to the establishment, and Trump's wealth allows him to run without strings. Anyone else would be cowed, but not Donald Trump.

They're going to have to shoot him if they hope to stop him. So, it's good to know that liberals can't really change their stripes.

Hi Simon! Keep on blogging about Harper. I'm sure Harper wants you to stop but don't. We need to bury him completely. He is still as dangerous as he was when he was Prime Minister. He is still leading the Cons. I want to see him prosecuted for those evil deeds of his. But will he ever be? I doubt it, Simon. Have Bush and his gang of thugs been prosecuted?

Here's what one person says about what's happening in the US.Do you think we could include Canada in some of this stuff Simon?
We're being fed a constant diet of fear: fear of terrorists, fear of illegal immigrants, fear of people who are too religious, fear of people who are not religious enough, fear of Muslims, fear of extremists, fear of the government, fear of those who fear the government. The list goes on and on.

The strategy is simple yet effective: the best way to control a populace is through fear and discord.

Fear makes people stupid.

Indeed, those living in the American police state are 8 times more likely to be killed by a police officer than by a terrorist

As long as the Cons have 99 seats and are the official opposition, the dialogue needs to stay open. They, being obedient serfs to Harper, are still keeping his agenda alive. The enormous damage Harper has caused will be eventually revealed and discussed. We came an election away from living in a police state. People need to know how that happened. Harpers governing was turned into tyranny. He was a an authoritarian autocrat who despised democracy and freedom. The MSM did nothing about this. Harper needs to be understood. So Simon as in Van Morrisons song "Rave on John Dunne Rave on", I say Rave on Simon, Rave on.

As shown in this article, an essay by a member of ISIS shows that politicians like Stephen Harper and presidential candidate Donald Trump are playing right into the hands of Islamic terrorists:

Just listen to the Cons attacking the new government for breaking their promises when they are not keeping their promises like pulling out the CF-18s. Read the stuff from some of the more moderate Cons pundits like Tasha Kherriddin, Ian Macdonald (putting aside the sycophants like Ivison and the rest of the gang at Postmedia) and you can see that the battle may be over but the war is still on. Strange that Scott would suggest that you are beating a dead horse: is he just out of touch?

No, Simon, you are correct in keeping on reminding us about the dark forces Harper had left behind. Until we implement PR (proportional representation), we cannot say "never again", eh?

As for Trump, I suspect he will discover, as Harper did, that there are only a finite number of bigots, and those are already voting for them. I suspect many of the more rational Republicans themselves will either stay home or even not vote for Trump. Remember how Danny Williams had appealed to Cons out East to stay home if they could not vote non Cons? Many Republicans are already calling Trump a fascist.

I'm not speaking for Scott Tribe here, but I suspect I get where he is coming from, I do not agree, but I get it. He is someone that is a firm true Liberal, and I believe he feels that turning the page from Harper is the right and proper way to do things, as we have with changes of government prior, as well as this being consistent with the message his party leader has been spreading all along. Which I find an understandable position, and one I would have shared under other PMs leaving and governments changing, and have.

However, Harper is a whole other matter. As you Simon, I see in Harper something alien to the Canadian way of life and value system, and the damages he did are still not only not well known/visible even now, but are far from finished impacting our government and society from government. This is going to be a long term project to deal with, and even after it is dealt with this needs to be Je Me Souviens, I remember, because we simply CANNOT allow something like this to ever happen again. Were it not for the foresight of PET things could have been utterly unrecoverable by this point, instead of just extremely difficult. THANK GODS he created the Charter and had it passed through not just Parliament but the Provincial legislatures along with the Constitution!

As to the rest of your post, that editorial cartoon with Harper and Trump and mirror, well that really sums it up as far as I'm concerned.

Hi again Simon. Just wanted to say,I wrote an article posted on The Democracy Under Fire Blog. It is called "The House That Harper Built:Built to Last. Part of it's point is that the Cons are not going anywhere soon. Feel free to read it if you wish. It's under my name.

I always thought that George W. Bush was Al Quaeda's greatest supporter. It looks like Trump is continuing the tradition for ISIS.

@ Simon,
I see no reason to let up on Harper, and especially his trained poodles who now still spout the same crap that Harper so carefully trained them to do.

Harper may have been evil but he had lots of loyal, enthusiastic supporters and people need to be reminded of this. I suggest that Scotian'suggestion of "Je Me Souviens" should be instead the one I saw on a t-shirt in Québec years ago "Nous nous souviendrons".

hi anon...and there I was thinking it was just crass incompetence...

Simon said...

hi anon...no I don't think anyone will shot him, I think he'll shot himself in both feed. He may excite the living dead in the Tea Party ranks of the Republican Party, but in a general election he will be killed. He is incredibly vulnerable to the same attack ads that were used against Barry Goldwater i.e. the little girl plucking daisy petals as the countdown to a nuclear war goes on in the background. He just too ignorant and crazy and I predict he will quit long before the election....

Simon said...

hi anon...don't worry I will. I still see him as the real leader of the Cons, and I want to see him pay, or at the very least condemned for some of the many foul things he did.
I find it hard to believe that some people can forget Harper in a month after what he did in almost ten years, but I'm not one of them...

Simon said...

hi anon...I believe it absolutely. I simply can't believe how two loser wannabe jihadists can scare a nation of more than 300 million, and turn so many of them into jabbering lunatics. It's exactly what the terrorists want, and it is insanity. Also, in the 24/7 news channel universe everything gets hyped and that only contributes to the hysteria. People really need to be braver and smarter....

Simon said...

hi Pamela...you're right, I think people are already forgetting how close we came to living in a police state, And I don't think they understand how hard the Cons and the Con media are going to attack Justin Trudeau and his government. There are hordes of Cons on the internet calling for Justin Trudeau to be overthrown by violent means. So yes, I will rave on... ;)

Simon said...

hi Political Junkie...yes of course they are. First the West created the problem, then they made it worse, and now they are planning to throw fuel on the fire. They don't seem to understand that ISIS is an apocalyptic cult, that wants to attract as many peoples as possible to its so-called Caliphate. And that the problem isn't not enough bombing, it's too much bombing...

Simon said...

hi jrkrideau... I must admit I can hardly believe what I'm seeing in America these days. It looks to me like sheer insanity, and it's turning the U.S. into a cowardly shell of what it once was. I we really going to let two people in the U.S. and eight people in Paris terrify us all out of our minds? But as for Harper, I will continue to attack the man and his legacy. And I like the "nous nous souviendrons" slogan a lot...

Simon said...

hi anon...yes it is grotesque to see the Cons attack the government, for not keeping, or having to readjust their promises, thanks to the economic incompetence of the Cons.It seems that ever headline writer is seeing how many times they can get "broken promise" into a headline. And as for Scott I have no idea why he would suggest that I am beating a dead horse for writing about Harper. But as I said in my post if he thinks I am going to stop he's got another thought coming. As for Trump, like you I think he will turn out to be much less than he might appear today. He's being hyped by the media and cheered by a small section of the Republican party, When reality finally hits he's going to look like a squished mouse...

Simon said...

hi Scotian...yes I think you're right. I think Scott is being very traditional about this election. But unfortunately this was no ordinary election and he fails to understand the feelings of many people out there. People are still angry about what happened, and not happy to see Harper scurry away, and what he did to this country for so long, dismissed so easily and quickly. We were very lucky, we dodged a bullet that could have killed this country, and you're right, our slogan has to be Never Again..

Simon said...

hi Pamela...thanks for the tip. I will definitely read it after I get some sleep, since I' almost falling out of my chair writing this... ;)
