The End of Harperland and the Search for Truth and Justice
I took down this picture from this blog's masthead, where it has been for years.
Because the tyrant has finally been toppled, and it's time to move on.
But if Stephen Harper thinks that I will forget him, or what he did to this country he is sadly mistaken.
For now that we have freedom, I demand justice.
For let's be clear, Harper's foul Con regime was not just an aberration, or a bad government gone horribly wrong.
It was an absolute democratic nightmare, and a decade of darkness.
And I want a full public inquiry into their crimes against Canada...
I want them to explain their actions under oath.
I want a small army of accountants to comb through their financial records to determine to what degree they cooked the books, and whether we really have a surplus after the way they tried to buy the election.
Or why Stephen Harper and his flying monkey Joe Oliver claimed that the economy was rapidly recovering, when the Bank of Canada's latest forecast is far more gloomy.
Bank of Canada Governor Stephen Poloz is warning that the oil price shock could weigh on Canada’s economy for at least another two years.
More worryingly, the Bank of Canada warned that the potential growth rate of the economy may be weaker than expected because of “capacity destruction,” some of which may never come back.
But even more urgently than all that financial corruption, I want to know to what degree they have corrupted our democracy.
I want to know whether the Cons ordered the Canada Revenue Agency to go after their enemies. The scientists, the environmentalists, the bird watchers...
And so many others who dared to criticize Stephen Harper.
And were muzzled for daring to speak out...
I want to know the real reason the Cons gutted the census and left us stumbling in the darkness of our own ignorance...
I want to know to what degree the depraved dictator turned our military into Harper's Army, or our security forces into Harper's Police...
I want to know if they have been spying on us, and how far down the road we are to becoming a police state.
I want every single member of this Con board fired.
And of course I want our new government to scrap or demolish Harper's plans to build this ghastly monument to himself...
Because it offends our eyes and our values, and he doesn't deserve one.
So yes I do want to move on. I want to start rebuilding our country.
Like Rick Mercer I want Canada's 42nd Parliament to be a new beginning...
But there cannot be freedom without justice.
As Robin Sears writes, the country may be returning to normal, but there are important lessons to be learned.
There are bitter lessons to be learned from first tentative, then full-blown invasion by the politics of class, race, gender, religious and ethnic division into the usually less welcoming body of inclusive Canadian society.
“Lest we forget,” it will be important to pass those lessons to future generations. How close we came to lasting damage, and how important it is to resist the fatal temptation of that poisonous politics when next it slithers into view.
Those who do not learn from the past are condemned to repeat it.
Harper's reign of terror must be investigated, so it can never happen again.
And if there is to be justice, the truth must be exposed.
And the guilty must be punished...
