The Con Porkers and the Disgraceful Muzzling of Elizabeth May

Over the years Stephen Harper's Cons have turned our parliament into a heaving grunting monstrosity, a fascist circus, a political pig sty.

They cut off debate, they answer any question about anything with the same talking points. They yell, they holler, they shout down their opponents like good ol' rednecks high on hooch. They lie like thieves, over and over again.

And when all fails they shut it down.

But even by their low standards, I found this particularly hoggish.

Conservative MPs denied Green Party Leader Elizabeth May a chance to speak Tuesday about Canada’s expanded mission against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant in the House of Commons.

May hoped to speak after NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair and Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau had both articulated their parties' opposition to the mission's extension. But she was thwarted by a few Conservative MPs who screamed "no" when Speaker Andrew Scheer asked for unanimous consent.

I mean can you believe that? The decent leader of one of the political parties in the Commons is denied a chance to say what she thinks about a decision to extend a military mission, and expand it to include Syria.

Even though the Con House leader, Peter "Tubby" Van Loan was apparently prepared to let her speak.

May said it seemed that Scheer was going to give her the floor after he looked down toward Conservative House Leader Peter Van Loan, who was saying yes. In the end, however, Scheer had to rule that the Green party leader could not speak.

But even he can't control his own hogs anymore...

Because so many of those good ol' boys are retiring, NOBODY can control them.

But then as you know, even when they're restrained, if the Cons don't like what you have to say, they will try to muzzle you.

Just ask the Canadian Bar Association that wasn't allowed to address the committee studying Harper's police state bill C-51...

No doubt because they believe that the bill is dangerous, and would deprive us of our liberties, while NOT making us safer.

And of course what Elizabeth May has to say about Harper's War also isn't what Great Leader wants to hear.

The Green party leader said she will not support the military mission in Iraq or Syria because it lacks clear goals, it doesn't have the backing of international law and she doesn't trust the prime minister to be truthful with Canadians about the mission.

The Green party's point of view, she added, is that any international mission needs to be sanctioned by the United Nations or it is illegal. She told reporters she could see a peacekeeping role for Canadians, in which Canadian Forces would protect vulnerable aide workers and help secure refugee camps.

It isn't exactly music to his piggy ears...

Because that's how low we have fallen.

And all I can say is that I hope Elizabeth May is part of a great progressive coalition government one day, because she defends our values well.

So she can help clean-up our parliament and make it decent and Canadian again.

After the hoggy Cons are finally defeated.

And sent back to the place they belong...

I dream of that day all the time.

And it can't happen soon enough...

I guess Simon by what Rick Mercer says I am part and parcel of the "entire legal community" does that make the entire Harper-cons an illegal community? I believe it does...

Cheers bro,

By the way Elisabeth May is the only voice of reason is she not?

Every day the Cons lower the bar. Maybe they should take a look at Lee Kuan Yew instead. He silenced people with a purpose.

It is indeed another slap in the face for democracy when the
Leader of the Greens is not allowed to speak to this issue. With her
history of carefully reading legislation I suspect that she would
speak to the item that says “notes that the Government continues
not to deploy troops in a ground combat role; “

This does NOT say they will not deploy ground troops in the
future, just 'notes' that they continue to not deploy them right now
and leaves the door wide open for troops on the ground whenever
Harper wishes.

Just how many of these Cons are planning to re-run for Canada when/if a Federal election does take place before I die??????? "Die"? Maybe "Succumb" is a better word! I have gone past the safe water mark and fear I may drown before I get to see All the clowns kicked off the Hill !

This is not funny anymore!

I disagree. I come here for my daily laughs over my coffee before going to work.

Please keep up with your comedy, it's golden.

Ms. May knows damn well that a muzzled voice in Parliament gets more attention than if she had spoken...May is one of the very few in Parliament I have any respect for, and she exemplifies to every other member what it means to be a real Canadian, fighting for our philosophy of social justice internationally as well as at home..
the fact that the Cons are too afraid to let her speak says more than anything she could say...
If the Harperoids had any intelligence at all, or anything like a memory, they would remember Chretien 's huge rise in popularity when he refused to let Canada get involved in Iraq...play to your supporters, Emperor Steve, but remember that you don't have enough of them to get you back in majority territory next time...

Just another Con affront to democracy. Don't think for a moment that this wasn't setup so the inbreeds shouting "no" take the heat and not Porky Van Loan. Harper must be proud of his brethren.

Elizabeth May as an MP for The Green Party, should not have to get permission to speak from anyone. There is so much we need to reform in our democracy.

all those big fat ole boys must be pretty scared of one little lady.

come election time voters ought to be reminded of how badly Ms. May was treated. The Greens need official party status so they can speak out on behalf of the people who vote for them. To do other wise is extremely undemocratic. Oh, right its the Cons, yes, not just Conservative Party of Canada but Convicts and perhaps about to be Convicts. the federal Conservative party looks like a Hells Angels chapter and that is no disrespect to the H.A. It is the Conservatives who like to say the Hells Angels are a criminal organization but the Conservatives have about as many convicted, up for trial, or charges as some bad H.A. chapters. So what is worse the federal Conservatives or the Hell's Angels.

hi Mogs...yes I believe does. In fact I'd go further. I think it makes the Cons a rogue regime, and it's depraved leader a dangerous maniac, or a fascist. For either we live by the rule of law or we are not a democracy...

hi anon...yes, I have been very impressed by her, and her views on what constitute Canadian values are exactly the same as mine...

hi Steve....it's like some kind of limbo dance. By now the bar is so low their asses are touching the ground. But somehow you KNOW they will still go lower...

hi Rural...it is indeed another slap in the face of our democracy, it's extremely un-Canadian, and lacks class and decency. And yes, the way the resolution is worded leaves the door wide open for all kinds of abuses. It's starting to look a lot like Afghanistan to me, and we should all be worried where those maniacs might takes us...

hi Kathleen...no it really isn't funny. As you know I try to use this blog to cheer up progressives, but these days it takes me a long time before I'm cheerful enough to even try doing that. However, since I enjoy my stupid little cartoons more than anyone, I'm damned it they'll get me down... ;)

hi mizdarlin...I hadn't thought of it that way, but you're right. What she would have said got more coverage than if the Cons had allowed her to speak. And their thuggish crass behaviour only made the look even more like beasts. And yes, what is striking is that the Cons are making all kinds of elementary and unnecessary mistakes, and it can only be a sign that they are increasingly desperate...

Simon said...

hi anon...yes it is another affront to democracy, more contempt for parliament. But I don't think it was a set-up. So many Cons are retiring many of them can't be cowed anymore, and their Reform side is emerging again. And of course I'm all in favour of that... ;)

Simon said...

hi Pamela...I quite agree. Not only is it an affront to the way a Canadian parliament should work, it's just plain rude and vulgar. Those Cons say they want to degrade ISIS, but all they are doing is degrading our democracy...

Simon said...

hi e.a.f....I didn't mention it in my post, but I can't help feeling that those good ol' boys wouldn't have been so rude if it had been a man instead of a woman. Because the misogyny of the Cons is one of the things I most hate about them. They have never shown any respect for women. And quite frankly on some days, especially after a liquid lunch, it is hard to tell them apart from some biker gang...

e.a.f. said...

Oh, yes you can, tell them apart, that is. Here in b.c. most full patchers can actually walk straight and if told to, maintain their manners.
